Widgets are soon becoming a trend. After seeing its applicability on a PC (in Windows Vista) and then on phones like the Samsung (with its TouchWIZ interface), Nokia too has widgets for the N97. These are live widgets that change depending on the data they show. Widgets can broadly be classified into Online and Offline Widgets; online being the ones that need internet access, and offline being the ones that do not need a net connection and just source data from the device. The N97, which is Nokia's new touchscreen phone, comes with several widgets pre-installed and you can also download more from the Ovi store. Now let's take a look at each widget and what kind of additional quick functionality they provide.
There are about 16 default widgets that are provided with the Nokia N97. Of these 16 widgets present in the phone, you can have only five widgets on the Main Screen of the N97. The layout of the widgets can be adjusted in the home screen edit mode, and you can move widgets up or down according to your preference.
Favorite Contacts I
The name of this widget says it all. This widget lets you have four of your favorite contacts on the main screen. This is an Offline widget and is like your quick-dial or speed dial on the N97. Contacts can be given an image; their own or something of your choice. Tapping on the contact gives you the option to Call (Voice/Video), SMS, or e-mail the person. This is a very simple widget.
Favorite Contacts II
If you find that you have more than just four favorites in your phone book, you can have an additional four with this widget. The rest of the widget is same. With this widget you can now have eight contacts.
Shortcuts I
Shortcuts is another widget that speaks for itself. This too is an offline widget. The widget provides you with four shortcut options to applications in the phone, be it basic or the ones manually installed. This lets you have the most frequently used applications right at your fingertips. The widget by default has New Message, Web-Browser, Nokia Maps, and Music Player. You do have the option to customize the shortcuts to your choice of applications.
Shortcuts II
Similar to the Favorites II widget we have the Shortcuts II widget this lets you have an additional four shortcuts. The default shortcuts of the Shortcuts II widget are Contacts, Calendar, Images Browser, and Video Browser. Likewise you can customize the shortcuts to your choice.

nokia enjoys 80% of indian market yet they cannot safegaurd its customers interest ie. when you lose a nokia handset the co. would not lock the handset even if you have its emei no. this shows the co. is least bothered about its customers am i right nokia . so every customer has to be cautious before purchasing nokia

Well right now in Nokia, the three most impressive phones will have to be N95, N86 8MP and N97, and business phones too are not very attractive like E72 etc, and the touch revolution is definitely in, but definitely the pricing has to be near 30k not over. That will be optimum pricing for the N97 say 28k and you probably wont be seeing any other phone around other than the N97 only thing I miss is that they should have given xenon flash optional with option to swap with the led flashes according to lighting. Nokia has the upper hand since Sony Ericsson are taking too long to release their damn phones and are quite getting on every SE fan's nerves including me. For crying out loud W995 is still seeing daylight in India and by the time it releases there'll be newer models like the 12 MP Idou and 8 MP Satio so its really gonna be a pain and not like other Mobile companies are not tagging along with their impressive inventions. All trying to be innovative and well faster in releasing their latest models respectively. So its gonna be one hell of a joyride for mobile users. Only thing is we gotta pray that the companies use their brains and price their stuff competitively and attractively so that the phones are affordable to say the least. And hope the Service providers wake up and start providing GPS/A-GPS and 3G at affordable rates rather than only phones having features that will never be used or for a trial of one month or 10 days. At this rate, we'll have to walk around naked with only the phone in hand covering our bare essentials!!! ; ) hee hee

N 97 model is with widest flexibility. Looks very interesting and stylish (For business use). i use a blackberry where u dont have these many widgets pre-installed on it. Infact nothing installed on it. I personally like this very much.

I would say Widget is a WINNER GADGET for mobile businessman. Wonder what one does with this phone when gets old and feel like replacing. Nokia will come up with another SPACEGET' as new gadget.

While still a really great all-round player, the N97 isn't quite the sum of its brothers' and sisters' borrowed parts. It's still a case of choosing a phone that does everything very well, or a one that does a couple of things brilliantly. The N97 is the former, but is definitely Nokia's most complete handset yet.

Have seen your review and quite attractive and interesting provided N97 works without any software and hardware glitches. I have been using nokia ever since mobile system was introduced in India starting with 5110 and had to end my relationship with nokia after buying 7710 which was also launched with lot of hype. The service from NOKIA is the worst and better not to write here and techtree should visit any of NOKIA service centre in metros and find for themselves the kind of dissppointment customers have.

Nokia N97 16 Live Widgets are meticulously chosen and carefully designed to help a daily business person like me to keep in touch with my friends, access my favourite sites and internet faster, organize my day well and get my work done faster....I think with the quick shortcuts and the Facebook widget, I feel like taking my world around with me... and interestingly Touch + Qwerty keyboard is a great combination which I was missing in other phones... Loving the LIVE Widgets feature...cheers :)

All this widgets are useless.they are good to read on paper.but practically they are useless.how many people will use them when they find there mobile bill increasing becoz those widget always need internet to update themselves.they are good when used on wifi but how many places in india has a wifi hotspot or wifi enabled office or home.most indian still rely on wired net.They are only useful when someone has unlimited data plans otherwise widgets are a bull shit concept

One thing we weren’t expecting from the Nokia N97 was the audio quality, which is loud and sharp. It’s not as crisp as the audio on the Nokia 5800 but then this isn’t a dedicated music player. Still, it’s a nice touch and shows Nokia hasn’t limited the N97 to just business functions.

It makes your internet experience more personal for the fact that widgets(16 default ) are provided in N97 which can be highly customized to suit your needs.

I really like the idea of offline and online Widgets. This is something new in this phone. The evolving of the online widgets is superb.. and naturally builds great interactivity and adds atomization to its characteristics

Good Review. Few points to add up; Opening lines misses the theme; it should have been something like "Nokia N97 one power offering in widgets". review go in length in words rather would have been better if created few more relevant pics and let them speak

Good observation, Rohit, but "one power offering in widgets" will undermine the phone by overemphasizing only 1 feature.

Widgets are great and will make it certainly user friendly the Nokia 97. The review is lengthy , it should more crisp and there should be an executive summary in bullet points that gives the highlights simply.

i am using this device now nearly for a month and believe there can be lot more on the review. Not to miss all the bugs, in short the device and applications are still in development phase...but it could be really promising and amazing set in near future. Firmware updates are just released for India..:).
