Nokia N81 8GB

Nokia N81 8GB

Frazier Barretto, Dec 21, 2007 1733 hrs IST

Here's the reincarnated Ngage/QD. Will it match upto the expectations of mobile game enthusiasts?

ARM 11 369 MHz Processor, Sound Quality, 8GB internal memory, Gaming Keys, 3G, Video recording VGA @ 15 fps.

Poor Build, Poor Battery, Bulky, 2 MP camera, No Card Slot, Expensive, Doesn't do justice to the N-Gage phone.

Design

The Nokia N81 is bulky. It's just a tad smaller in size than other bar type phones when closed. With its slider pushed up, the phone looks like a 25 storey tower alongside a 16 storied one. The N81 has a complete plastic body that gives a not-so-nice feel when held. The phone should have had a metal build which would just make it bulky and would clear out all of the build sickness it has now. The Nokia N81 is designed to be used as a music player as well as a gaming device; it being the first of the phones after long featuring the N-Gage tag.

Layout: Standard

For its basic features, the N81 can be used in the portrait mode; it follows the layout of the keys likewise. At the top of the phone there's a keypad lock/unlock switch (similar to the hold switch seen in MP3 Players), a 3.5mm jack, and a power/profile button. The keypad lock/unlock switch of the phone got jammed at numerous instances resulting in a number of retries to unlock or lock the keypad.

The 3.5mm jack of the phone is standard and lets you use your personal set of headphones. The power/profile button, unlike the build quality of the phone, is very sturdy; in-fact so sturdy that I had to use my finger nails to press it.

The face of the phone is quite complicated. It has a large 2.8-inch screen covering up most of the face. Above the screen are the earpiece and a VGA camera for 3G video calls. Nokia has once again managed to cluster the controls under the screen, just like the ones in the E65.

The E65 has 10 buttons and a 5-way D-Pad while the N81 has managed 11 keys along with a 5-way D-pad. I must say it's a brilliant job at clustering the navigation key area.

Nokia has even incorporated a Navi-wheel function into its D-Pad giving the phone an iPod sort of an experience. The sides of the D-Pad work like the touch-wheel of the iPod. There are 2 Menu keys, 2 Call buttons (very oddly placed check image below), Main Menu button, Clear button, new shortcut key, and 4 rather soft music playback controls around the D-Pad.

The answer call button was jammed throughout the time that I used the phone. Since it was jammed, it would auto open the call log and in sometime dial the last dialed number; or if I had the keypad locked it would keep displaying the "unlock keypad" error message. The music playback controls are too soft, one slip off the D-pad and there was music playing loud enough to get you the stares. The new shortcut key is a nice addition; I shall speak about its function later. The Edit-Text button is the one key which I felt Nokia shouldn't have missed out after adding so many other keys.

nokia is overrated and literally plays with the customers mindset since they are nokia they can launch any shit and get away with it looking at this handset u feel they have seriously crippled a amazing handset why do they fcukaround with the Ngage platform is really beyond me , they can become the leaders in the field but decide to play smart and fall on their face everytime

Any chances of Nokia launching a plain vanilla Ngage fone for less than 10k? I mean to say a fone with reduced features?

its a real shit phone, the navi-wheel is decent but limited only to gallery and music player... go for n73 with a 3.2mp cam instead. much better functionality, cheaper cost.

ITS time u should start reading before writing the comments sweety. The N81 has a poor Li-Po 1050 mAh battery. The battery can barely last for a day. The battery low warnings wouldn't stop until plugged for charging. Poor battery life for a powerful phone, and even more disappointing for a gaming device.

Undoubtedly Nokia is the Best, Symbian OS, Rough and Tough, Best Resale Value, Good Battery Backup etc.

Sony Ericsson is the best! I have been a Nokia user for long and now regret all those futile years! There aint no phone like the W880i. This N Series is all marketing hoopla!

hey Frazier, when you say " I used a pair of headphones lying around to check the quality of the N81 which didn't disappoint" you should have mentioned what headphones u were using.I was expecting EP 630 with N81 u would compare with SE walkmans since SE sound good mainly due to good headphones.also are u sure screen is 2.8 inch and not 2.4 inch?
