Nokia E63

Nokia E63

Prasad Naik, Jan 06, 2009 1844 hrs IST

Nokia E63 is a perfect business phone with a full QWERTY keypad at an affordable price.

Solid build quality, QWERTY keypad, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm headphone jack, Great battery life, Decent sound quality.

Display could have been bigger and brighter, No dedicated volume control keys, Poor camera.

Design and Construction

The E63 looks almost identical to its elder brother, the E71. The only difference here is that now the body is all plastic compared to the part metal body of the E71. This is obviously to reduce the price of the E63 but it also makes it look less upmarket. In fact, when placed beside the E71, the E63 does look quite bland. Also, the E63 is thicker than the E71. While the E71 measures a stunning 10 mm, the E63 adds 3.0 mm more to its waistline. However, the E63 does weigh 1 GM less than the E71 at 126 gm, which is partly because of the lighter plastic body and the lack of GPS receiver. Overall the E63 may not have the sleek upmarket look of the E71, but it still looks nice. The weight and the dimensions are quite manageable considering it has a full QWERTY keypad.

On the front of the phone we can see the call speaker at the top with the light sensor on its right. There is no video camera as seen on the E71 though. Below the speaker is the 2.36" display in the landscape orientation. Below the display is the D-Pad in the center with shortcut keys on its left and right and the Menu key, along with the soft keys and the Call/End keys. Below that is the full QWERTY keypad, which has undergone minor modifications since the E71 (more on that later though).

BB-8520 would cost you around 16k and E63 costs you roughly 11k ( 10900 Rs). Both these phones belong to "Business Phone" category, implying that you`d be on GPRS on both (and NOT 3g, since none is 3g). E63 is a better option for the 'real business users', coz the e63 has Class 32, 100 kbps GPRS, and when lined up against BB 8520`s mere Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps, E63 is way faster online than BB-8520. I have tested both of them. Moreover e63 has Class 32, 296 kbps EDGE, and BB-8520 is way behind with Class 10, 236.8 kbps EDGE. The only things BB outshines, outnumbers and outclass e63 are the looks, the Brand and better sound quality. IMHO I wouldn`t pay 5k for all these UP-Market functions.

oopps correction ... e63 is 3g and BB-8520 is 2g.

Hi I purchased the E63 today for 12300/- in Mumbai. It does not come with a leather cover, you need to buy it separately. There is a general Nokia E series leather Cover that comes at around 100 bucks.

With no offense to Mr. Nair, The review is good but not higher on thechnical as well as practical part. From your part Mr. nair you have done adequate job but atleast you should have a look on gsmarena. com and see the review of nokia e63. Regards

The battery ability mentioned in this review is perfect. I got mine from Reliance at 14.9k. I had a RAZR2's micro USB, so no problems with data cable. Got about 2.5 days of battery with general bit of music, lot of texting and about 1.5hours of talking. Yeah the features are good, but the intuitive way in which these features have been exposed is awesome.

I got a data cable seperately, cost me 200 bucks and it works perfectly. In mumbai btw

by Sejal, Mumbai, on Feb 12, 2009 10:52 PM, Report abuse   Reply

USB DATA CABLE is not included in the package. Difficult to find.

Mr.Naik, is this a review or a joke? Not a single detail has been reviewed, looks more like a description. E71 battery itself lasts 3-4 days with normal usage (1hr/day call, 30mts/day GPRS, 30mts/day GPS)................and that being the case, the E63 with less features should only last longer. So please dont pass a generic statement that the battery lasts 2 days. We dont need your assumptions.

can the author or anybody please tell me if the lack of hsdpa might be a problem in the future, as far as i can see this is the only thing missing apart from looks n gps when compared to e71, i would not like to shell out around 4.5 k more for just the looks and gps, but my cause of concern is hsdpa, should i worry about it?

I got it at 'The Mobile Store'. The problem is the data cable. I'm still searching for a compatible cable. Is this the same as the one in E71? Can anyone confirm it?
