Nokia 6230

Nokia 6230

Gagan Gupta, Apr 27, 2004 0000 hrs IST

Nokia has come out with a phone that may not only turn out to be the most successful phone this year

Excellent functions in a great sized phone, Great Multimedia functions

Some may find the screen a bit small

Camera and Multimedia Functions
The functionality of this phone is so broad that I have to categorize it in different sections. One of the most appealing aspects of the phone is of course its inbuilt VGA camera, capable of shooting photos and also video clips with sound.

If you are a photography enthusiast who wants to make a masterpiece of every picture he clicks then a phone camera is definitely the wrong way to go. But if you're the type who likes to keep a camera handy to capture the random ridiculous moments happening around you, then the camera in the 6230 is more than satisfactory. The camera shoots at 640 x 480 pixels in three different modes. There's a standard mode, good enough for most situations except for lowlights. That's where the Night mode comes in, which greatly enhances the pictures taken in lowlight conditions as can be seen in the example below. Lastly there's a portrait mode (80 x 96 pixels), which is perfect for taking small sized facial shots via MMS.

Standard Mode
Night Mode

Video shooting is definitely one of my favourite features of this phone. To begin with, this one doesn't have the ridiculous 10 second video shooting limit that was there in the Nokia 6600, which means that you can easily shoot up to 4 minutes of video with sound on the 32 MB bundled MMC. And speaking of sound, the sound recording is just excellent on this one. Every video I recorded with people's voices was clear and perfectly audible. The videos can be sent via MMS or can be stored on your PC in 3GP format, which you can playback on the free Philips Platform4 player.

Other multimedia functions include an MP3/AAC player and a stereo FM Radio. You can store music files either on the 7 MB internal memory or the 32 MB MMC. Of course if 32 MB is not enough for you, you can always upgrade your MMC to 128 MB. The audio player comes with a preset graphic equalizer with options like Rock, Jazz, Pop, etc. to enhance the sound quality of the files.

The FM Radio requires the headset to be plugged-in at all times even if you intend on listening to it on the phone's loudspeaker, since the headset doubles up as a receiver.

A sales person at one of the mobile stores told me that 6230 or 6230i are not compatible to serve softwares like movie player voice recorder etc. Is that true? I am planning to buy a mobile for myself and am unable to choose among 6230, 6230i or the latest 3250. Please could anyone make a suggestion and clear the doubts that I have already expressed

Buy a Nokia 6230 instead for about 15K. Add on a 512 MB card for under 3k. You now have a MP3 player, FM radio, VGA still camera, Video camera , Voice recorder, ability to handle your email via GPRS, watch TV videos with EDGE, communicate with your PC/notebook via bluetooth, and (whew)a mobile phone that will cut your MP3 or FM (both in stereo on the headphones) automatically in one small device. Talk about convergence devices! This is the most value for money at the moment. http://murugan.shorturl.com/

I fail to understand why you guys say best design it terms of looks and usability. Any Nokia phone has the same functions with the keys and almost all of them look the same (like a pencil box for kids) e.g 3315,3310,1100,2100,6600 et all. Nokia need to consult DC for some serious designs. What a pity that they are the largest selling cell phone manufacturers in the world!!

I would love to upgrade to a Nokia 6230, it is certainly a beauty.I have a tendency to drop the phone quite a lot, was wondering how well the 6230 will react to the numerous falls, also how much would a 128MB MMC cost me ? This beauty is available in Calcutta for about 16,900 now, I will wait for another week or two before picking it up.Just if I was a bit more confident about the body and reactions to falls it would have made a whole lot of things easier. My Nokia 2100 falls about 3 times on an average everyday and I must say other than a few scratches the phone is certainly very user friendly and worth each and every penny spent on it.
Stef
,Norwich, on Nov 21, 2004 04:36 PM
I haven't dropped my 6230 yet but I'd say Nokia reliability is probably the best. I gave an 8310 to my son - it went through a 40°C wash cycle twice, fell in a river, was chewed by a dog, and was dropped too many times to count - and it still works. I accidentally went swimming with my 6100 and it stopped working so I took it apatr and dried it out. The display came back after a couple of days but no sound. Took it to a repair man in Joburg who used a laptop and interface box to re-route the sound signals from the damaged electrical tracks to spare good ones and it was fine.

I dropped my 6230 many times cause I like to place it on my leg while I'm driving. When I open the door and get off the car guess what, bang, the phone hit the road. I already replaced 2 face plates because they have scar all over them. But the phone still working as new. Thank you Nokia! You guys make a rock solid phone!

Pair the phone with PC or whatever from which the MP3 is transferred. Then on the phone you have to set the paired PC as trusted device. This shuld be somewhere in the Bluetooth settings of the phone.

Generally, mmc card of 32 MB comes with the instrument. 6230 never comes with any data cable. Even if you buy it by paying whatever full price, you have to buy the transferring device separately. DataCable costs about 1000 rupees in India. You can also use Bluetooth Dongle for wirless transfer of music files from PC to Nokia 6230. There is not much difference in costs.

1) Is MP3/AAC playback also in stereo on both headset and on handsfree speaker. Everywhere only FM Radio is mentioned as stereo. What about the recorded videos? Are they also in stereo? 2) Also, is Nokia 6230 available in complete black (all black including keypad as given in this site) colour in Bangalore anywhere? Complete black is stunning to look at. Everywhere they have only silver keypad with graphite panels. Please clarify this. Thanks Krishnan

I have a nokia 6230 since two months. The firmware version is v3.15. Since then, i hav been having lots of firmware bugs, mainly with bluetooth communication with a pc. Now, i am getting an "insert sim card" message, though my SIM was properly working during those two months. Apparently it is a bug.

I agree - it's a real pain. All it needs is for the nav button to have a slightly raised centre - perhaps one of the independent replacement cover manufacturers will improve it. Perhaps they can also think of a way of protecting the camera lens better.

For mp3s to be recognised by the media player, they must be in the root MMC. They won't be recognised if you put them in a folder in the MMC card.
Kev
,Southampton, UK, on Oct 15, 2004 09:33 PM
Tracks in the root folder on the MMC will be recognised automatically, but apparently there is a way to add tracks in a folder within the MMC to the track list. But I can't find out how.
Russ
,Ipswich, on Nov 06, 2004 01:45 AM
All tracks must go in the root of the MMC irrespective of whether you have play lists or not. Using v5.8 of Audio Manager, define an empty play list in the Music Studio window and transfer to Phone. This will appear in the bottom window, the phone window, in a folder called playlist. Right click the mouse on this new entry in the playlist and select 'add'; this produces a complete list of all tracks in the MMC root so simply select those you require for this particular playlist. If you want to then add another playlist make sure you refresh by rught clicking on the nokia 6230 label in the phone window then proceed as above - tortuous but you can then define your playlists - realy all the playlist is is a pointer to tracks in the MMC root.

Okay, rkaid, i think that you're the expert on this one. I went to the Nokia Service centre; the flashed the firmware to v 4.43 (they didn't have v 4.28). But then Mr.Murphy always is with you. The Murphy's law that came to mind was,"hey thissounds too good to be true". And i guess it was. I put the card in the slot (i'd already renamed it) and as Mr.M would have it, it still doesn't show up in the phone (whether via the "gallery" of the phone, or when linked to my PC). Now i noticed an interesting thing. You mentioned that you're using a 256MB "Integral" MMC. The one that i have is of some vague company called "My Flash, R-Data". Could it be that this (cheap) company mmc is the problem. Just for the record, i have two USB card readers. Interstingly, this 512MB mmc shows up on one of the card readers (Gemini card reader, which is a cheap brand too), but doesn't show up AT ALL on the other reader (Data-Mate 6-in-1 reader). Should i get my mmc changed to a branded one ( i live in india, and ScanDisk flash devices seem to be the most reliable media). Phew, long story....

Pls clarify my doubts on 6230: 1) How to make an mp3 (clip/file) as ringtone in 6230? Pls help. 2) How good is the camera for still snaps as compared to K700. & Is it easy to download the snaps & video clips to PC using Infrared? 3) Is the battery life really bad? 4) How much will the USB cable for 6230 cost in Bangalore? Thanks!
DocP
,Kanpur, on Oct 24, 2004 11:07 PM
Some answers. To make an MP3 a ringtone, simply goto the MP3 via the "Gallery". Use the left button ("Optios") and you'll find "Set as ringtone. As far as IR is concerned, i wouldn't recomment it; go for a bluetooth dongle, or a DKU cable (USB). Battery life isn't bad at all..... depending on the "memory effect".... that's a phenomenum of rechargable batteries (You should do at least 3 full charge-discharge cycles with a new battery). A genuine Nokia cable costs above 2k if i remember correctly. If you're not too fussy with the difference between a "fast" transfer", and a "lightening fast" transfer, go in for the bluetooth donle; i got a billed WIDCOMM dongle for Rs.1175 Hope the info helps

Hi every1. Just bought a 512 MB MMC. Renamed it before inserting into the phone (using my card reader). But when i go to the "gallery", it doesn't show my MMC. Does anyone have the foggiest clue as to what's going on??? MAYBE, just maybe, N6230 doesn't support MMCs greater than 128MB. If anyone has used an MMC of a greater capacity your feedback would be invaluable to me. Thanks.

,UK, on Sep 14, 2004 03:54 AM
The 6230 does support higher than 128MB. I am using a 256MB MMC made by Integral and it works great. I have read that to get 512MB cards to display correctly you need to get your handset flashed with the lastest firmware revision. You can your version by inputting *#0000#. The latest firmware is v4.28. If you take your handset to a Nokia shop they can do this for you (at a price I think, unless you can talk your way out of paying for it)

OPEN THE NOKIA P.C SUITE AND GO TO 'MULTIMEDIA' THEN SELECT A VIDEO FILE FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE, THE FILE WILL START PLAYING. NEXT CLICK 'FILE' AND THEN 'SAVE AS'. SAVE THE FILE WITH A DIFFERENT NAME, ONE YOU WILL EASILY FIND LATER. THE NOKIA SUITE WILL RE-ENCODE THE FILE AS .3GP WHICH IS WHAT THE PHONE USES. WHEN IT'S FINISHED SEND THE FINSHED FILE TO YOUR MMC USING A CABLE OF WHATEVER YOU WANT AND HEY PRESTO! JUST BE AWARE NOT ALL FILES CAN BE CONVERTED USING NOKIA PC SUITE, IF THEY CANT BE CONVERTED THE 'SAVE AS' OPTION WILL BE BLANKED OUT. IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE PROBLEMS USE THE HELP FEATURE ON PC SUITE! GOOD LUCK! GOBSTA

Whas happening people?! I have had this antastic fone for almost 2wks. In he first wk i went and bought the usb bluetooth adapter for using inconjunction with the NOkia Pc Suite. Trasnferring mp3s via bluetooth, is pointless as it seems to be "Not Repsonding" (the prgog), only a few tracks that 2 wont go straight to the mmc. however i am considering to purchase a mmc reader for my laptop, ne ideas how much it is and will it have other software? YOU CAN ACCESS THE MMC THROUGH A DKU-2 CABLE AND JUST DRAG AND DROP MP3 FILES INTO THE MMC IN WINDOWS EXPLORER, EASIER THAN USING NOKIA PC SUITE.

I am thinking of buying a DKU-2 cable for connection of the Nokia 6230 to my PC. Either that or get one of those bluetooth add-ons to my PC and transfer by bluetooth. What I need to know is how is the transfer rate with bluetooth for say transferring mp3 songs? I heard it is slow, is that true? Should I just get the cable?
DocP
,Kanpur, on Sep 13, 2004 08:47 AM
Yes Bluetooth would be slower than a USB cable (700KBPS vs whatever speed the USB cable is, depending on whether it's 1.1 or 2.0) . But i use a bluetooth dogle, and am pretty happy. Go for a bluetooth dongle as it has extended uses, unless of course you want lightening speed transfers of your MP3s.

Hey Jag, The DKU-2 USB cable doesn't come with the phone. You have to buy it seperately. However, if your not too hung up about data transfer speeds, then a Bluetooth USB dongle is good thing to go for, as you can use it with other bluetooth devices (for example, you can LAN two PCs without any wires).

Ms Neha has an interesting point. I just bought the N6230 yesterday, and was trying the same stunt. I don't know how she is linking the phone to her PC, but i'm using the IR port (which is very very slow). And as Neha says, the mp3 is stored in the Music folder of the phone, not the memory card. Besides, unlike my Sony Clie, which when connected to the PC shows the Memory stick as a "removable disk" and thus allows me to browse, add, delete et cetera, the Nokia MMC does NOT show up in Windows Explorer. I wonder why they've said that one can use a 512 MB MMC, when transfering data is such a pain. (the phone comes with a 32 MB MMC). Any solutions guys?????????????????

There is a alight problem when you use the phone right out of the box. If you use the nokia PC Suite you can brows the contents of th phone but not the MMC, right? The solution lies in that you have to name the MMC card. Just name it mmc and you'll be on your way. Do not use capitals! I did and the PC still couldn't find the MMC card.

Hey u guys, SE(sony ericsson) sucks like hell no good features the only good thing is the solid body. i've been using SE as well as nokia for a long time now and presently have SE Z600 & P900 also nokia 6600 NOKIA ROCKZ big-time various options in terms of memory, accessories etc that u have and even the resale value of nokia is better than SE. Interface however of SE is better and stable but the interactiveness of nokia is the best.although SE is working on it but still lagging behind. I visit Gaffar market on a weekly basis so have a kind of inside view. Nokia specially in INDIA is a success that cant b overcome by SE of samsung. But yes nokia 6230 has a smaller screen but atleast u can view the damn picture while if u load the pic of SE eg Z600 on to PC or any other Mob the pic size becomes one-fourth of his screen (coz smaller pixel pic size). Although improved camera compared to T610 but still behind NOkia. Guys wait for 6620 if u can or go for 6230.

Its me again, I've copied the mp3 files to mmc (lower case) to the phone (total 29 MB). The files list, but when I try to play them, I get no sound and the tracks are stuck at 0. I have my playlist in the playlist folder. WTF is happening, I thought nokia were good????

hey dude, how wer u able to create a track list, what's happening to my n6230 is that after i copy my mp3s to my mmc, if I want to play the music i can't use music player because it doesn't see any music files. If i transfer it to the music files folder, it can only hold up upto the phones memory which is 8mb? How can I create a playlist from the music folder that would recognize that the mp3 files are on the mmc

I get it now, its a right pain!. You need to reboot the phone after you rename to mmc. Then you need to reboot the phone again after you download all your files and the playlist. What a pain in the rectum.

Its a great phone at first, very usable, neat feel and look. But when you want to transfer file, it is a big pain in the ass. I've ordered 256Mb, so I hope they improve the software fast.

There's some talk about how to directly load mp3's from your PC *directly* onto the MMC card, but no details. I still can't find how to do it. Which application do you use? The Nokia PC Suite has an "Audio Manager" application, but it doesn't seem to allow me to transfer direct to the MMC card, even though i've named it "mmc" as suggested by someone earlier?
Joshi

It's fairly easy, use a mmc card reader from your USB port and upload directly from your PC to the card!

I just blue tooth mine to the phone then save direct to mmc when it asks for the loction
Igor
,Kiev, on Jul 15, 2004 03:17 AM
As I have discovered only way to download directly to MMC is to save into phone's cash memory first and than to save in MMC. But for me it is also very interesting how to save files more than 8 Mb directly to MMC via Bluetooth (not using cardreader). Because cash memory of the phone is 8 Mb only, but MMC can be 256 Mb and even 1 Gb. I can see folders Gallery, Tones etc. in the phone from PC but I do not see MMC folder. Anybody knows how to fix that bug?

Go into Audio manager, put CD in drive and then when the song listing appears highlight the song you want then hit save. The song will be transfeered to AAC format (far smaller than MP3) and saved in your documents. Then go to the file where the song is saved and simply highlight the file, click file, go to send, transfer the song to the phone via the bluetooth drop down icon. Once the phone received the file it will beep to alert you then simply save it to the MMC. Buy a 128mb card.

Hey, i'm kinda non-tech savvy. Q. How do I transfer my MP3 files DIRECTLY to the MMC? What I'm doing at present is sending the file to the Music folder in the phone's main memory, and then MOVING it to the card. Since the phone doesn't have much memory, I have to transfer MP3s one at a time, which is really bugging. Help on this issue would really be appreciated.

after installing nokia pc suite and have your n6230 connect to pc or laptop either throught infared or usb cable there is an icon on the computer desktop saying send files to another computer click on that and send away.! :D make sure u make folder on mmc card though its much easier to keep track of what you are doing.

Hi Guys , I have to decide in the next two days which mobile to take : Nokia 6230 or Sony Ericsson T630. The price is almost the same but that doesnt metter. T630 pros-contras: Big screen ,morphun games support , great design , menu/navigation is better then nokias ::::: shitty camera quality , 2mb memory Nokia 6230 : Great camera quality , radio , mp3 (u can store 6 mp3 on the 32mb u get with the one , which is not a lot):::: Navigation/menu are not as good as ericssons , no themes , display seemes much smaller in comp with eric. , to listen to the radio u Have to plug in the headset first , only than u can switch to phonesspeaker . Plz help me guys , i REALLY dont know which to take .

Sumeet is right. The camera is really good considering it's a 640x480 pixel VGA one. The 4 way +enter key really needs getting used to. Overall, I think it's Nokia's best phone till date; maybe the 7700 will be a bit better as they're integrating a PDA into it.

No offense intended, but very superficial review. Phone is disappointing in its connectivity implementation. Bluetooth does not work with many devices including my Clie UX-50, meaning it lets u transfer data but not use the phone as a modem. Casing of phone looks good, but is way too delicate, after two weeks of use it isn't as solid and squeak free. Screen to small for serious surfing and gprs use. the 4 way rocker key is crap, and needs very careful pressing. Overall 6600 is way better, if they can somehow jam an intel xscale or some kinda processor in it since its only flaw is it hangs and is slow.

Heyy, I own a 6230, I think its a gr8 ph. The small screen helps keep the ph soo light. gd battery life, is worth all the money. The camera clarity is amazing, see it to believe it. Its more loaded than a 6600.

I was earlier using Nokia 7650 & currently using Nokia 6600. It is an execellent phone, however without FM & stereo sound out put. I was looking for a same phone with these two functions added. But I do not think Nokia 6230 is the right replacement. It does not have a navigation key, the dispaly is too small to watch videos. Pixels are also less. Overall I do not wish to change my existing Nokia 6600 with Nokia 6230. waiting for an identical phone as Nokai 6600 with FM radio, stereo sound output, thermometer, humidity indiacator & off course with min. 128 MB MMC card.

All Nokia cell phones based on series 40 OS are bad. Not many apps at all and phones keep crashing and restarting. Programs written in java have limited capabilities due to limited nokia api's. Nokia must put s60 OS in these s40 phones to create the ultimate phones.
