The 5800 XpressMusic phone is a candy-bar phone. Like all XpressMusic phones this too has a plastic build. I certainly didn't like the overall plastic build but the design is good.
Three Buttons under the screen; two calling & Main Menu (Breathing alert light).
Multimedia Bar Button - over the screen under video call camera.
The sides of the phone have a are dark maroon finish with a reflective line.

Nokia 5800 express music review
I have been using Nokia 5800 for almost 6 months now and I am extremely unsatisfied. Nokia has lost the brand image, quality of its products has detorited. Nokia has once again proved that touch screen phones are just not thier area of expertise.
Problems with Nokia 5800
1. The phone does not switch on
This problem happens very frequently on 5800. Although there are work arounds for this problem (remove memory card and battery), it is very annoying. Apparently, this happens when there are bad sectors/ currupt files on the file system. Whatever, software should be able to report an error and recover.
2. Touch Screen does not respond
Another extremely annoying problem. You can see the incoming call but when you touch the receive button, nothing happens. I mean, common on we expect more than this from Nokia. Press menu button and only part of the screen is visible.
3. Device is slow
The device is extremely slow. When you keep it on for several days (which is obviously the case with phones), the RAM memory shoots up and device performance detoriates terribly. Also, the processor itself is very slow comparied to the other smart phones in the category.
4. Potrait/ landscape switching
It takes really annoying amount of time for the phone to switch between Potrait/ landscape modes.
5. Stylus socket
The stylus socket turns very loose within a few months. It is impossible not to loose the stylus (I have lost the stylus and the spare:(). Guess what, the empty place holder for the stylus looks horrible.
With all these problems Nokia has not bothered to release a new software in India (although there has been several releases elsewhere).
I would not recommend this phone. Nokia 5800 express music is not a recommended buy.
Hi All, I bought this mobile yesterday in Bangalore. I didnt got any TV output cable along with the box. Did i missed anything else in this box? Please tell me what are all the other accessories that comes along with this...
hi Sendil, the tv cable output, second stylus and others are the accessories when the price was 22k... now with price at 14k what u get is phone, 8Gb memory card, charger, battery n free head set wrth 2.5k...... i purchased the phone one month back from PUNE
Hi Friend,
I was little confuse to buy this set as I read so many reviews and all they were negative for Camera quality and Video too.
CAMERA - I went to Mobile Outlet and took the Demo. I found the quality of picture is good as well as video. But yes it is lil grainy, but don’t forget r you’r buying a cellphone not camcorder or Digicam. So as I found it has a good Camera.
TOUCHSCREEN – It is good. I used it in demo and it was easy to acess everything.
PRICE – Go Mobile Shope running a offer of Rs.200 off on every set. So it is costing me Rs.13,300. Other wise everywhere in East Delhi, it has a price tag of Rs.13500.
PUSHMAIL n OTHER – As I had a word with an Mobile Seller Exec. He said he ll install the software of Pushmail, which is free of cost. Means you can access your official mail or others. Service is free of cost as Nokia has done a Tie up with all the Service Providers. Whereas in Nokia Priority , they directly refuse for installation of Software for Pushmail.
OTHER – Getting 8GB card free of cost with this handset and Some pin or card for downloading Songs.
So, I thinks this would be a perfect buy in all the matters. I have also gone thru Samsung Star, LG Cookies, and HTC one. I found this set worth to buy.
i guess the review of nokia 5800 for camera quality is negative because the price when launched was Rs22000 or something so the reviewers wrote accordingly as we all know a phone is reviewed when it makes an entry into the market but now things have changed..so in my opinion you can't get better than this.go buy it.
guys i bought this phone 3 days back and let me tell you, other than the plastic feeling that u get after holding the phone there is no other problem. i checked the camera quality and the images were not grainy at 8pm but in bulb/tube light. The camera is not as bad as it is mentioned in review. Has lot of additional features and am enjoying the gps experience on it.Not a bad bargain...sound is good...screen is good, features are good....i like 5800
I am seriously considering buying nokia 5800, where can I get the best price in Bangalore. Also whats the cost of using GPS (end to end) excludign the navigation which costs. Can people share their experience of using GPS.
HTC has the worst support and service. Their warranty is bullshi.. the warranty means.. no warranty. Anything thats broken, does not get fixed. You gotta pay for any part that breaks. You drop it once, and something breaks.
Hey Guys, I got news that 5800 has now upgradad FW v-31 which is better as it has kinetic scrolling and better sensitivity of touch screen. Is this version of phone is available in india or not, any one have idea?
hiiiii can any one suggest me to buy which mobile ........my choices is between nokia 5800 ,samsung touch wiz f480,nokia 5530 xpressmusic, noikia x3..........................please suggest me the best mobile in all conditions or suggest a good mobile in price tag rs15000
Hi guys, my friends have decided(!!) i'm gonna buy this mobile next week. i've been using N70 for long time and i'm not a mobile freak who knows all in & out of mobiles. do let me know if i can go for this mobile coz i don't change mobiles often.
Hey guys, are you saying that nokia removed the tv out function from the phone or is it still there? Except that they don't provide any cables? And many people complain that it has a slow user interface, can a future firmware upgrade speed the phone up? Plz tell me if this is a good phone or not. Cuz I wanna buy it..
Hi guys...useful review below..few doubts..it started from 21500 and now at 12920 (including minimum 5% cash back assurance from mobile store)..is nokia planning to phase out the model or price reduced due to the customer complaints??anybody got the phone very recently and stiil facing all the problems??just want to know whether nokia has rectified anything..samsung star 3g now at 10600 at mobile store..which will be a better deal? Pls advice..
HEY VIVEK, The smart Nokia people has removed TV-Out function from th cellphone .Apart from that they have removed all major accessories from the package. Hence there is a Price drop.
the sennheiser headset is provided now with yr nokia 5800 , its sound quality is extremely fantastic. camera is too good when used in day time , but not bad under dark as well ( it is better than sony c510 ) . overall an inteligent buy costing around 14000
Dude if you just want to buy a camera, then you are hopeless...why are u pissing about 3.2 MP everytime alongwith the price of 20K saying that there should be a better camera at this price...why dont u look at the host of other attractive features like GPS, Wi-Fi, Touchscreen, 8GB card, etc that u are getting in a sub-20K phone.....You shld buy a digicam instead I believe :P
y dont u try sony ericsson aino.................. it has all the features........including a xcellent 8.1mp camera......& have a price of around 18,500... or u can try LG arena also
i want to buy a new 5800 can any tell me would it be a good deal to buy it for Rs.14600/-
it consist all the applications
is this phone upgraded now.........
y dont u try sony ericsson aino.................. it has all the features........including a xcellent 8.1mp camera......& have a price of around 18,500...
or u can try LG arena also
Nokia is cheating this time(Nokia5800)-
1. picture quality is like old VGA camera (I was using N73, which has same specification but picture quality of nokia 5800 is worst).
2. Nokia says it as a music phone but music quality is same as old phones (ya, its headset jack is a good thing)
3. No adobe reader in 5800....i have to buy it for Rs. 800.
4.some times it goes off automatically.
5. now i m facing prolem, it does not boot....On switching on phone , it shows nokia logo but does not start....i have shown it to customer care twice but now again same prolem.
6. No file hide software....initially they proides u, file hide software which is a demo n like many other software they demand money after trial period.
7. Games devloped for it r pathetic.......if u like mobile games, this phone will make u cry. this phone is not compatile for most software or games u download from net.
Guys Iam phone freak. I found 5800 very good, I dont know who are the people who have rated this phone. but if you compare phone has good camera, gps receiver, wifi, 3g/edge, it is symbian phone( lots of application) unlike windows it can support more that 65000 colours, good music quality with FM. coming to touch screen it has both heat sensing as well as stylus usability, I dont know ne other phone provies it. typing on phone is easier which is major problem in touch screen phone. nokia phones are rough & touch so no handling issues. This is phone not a airplane which can makie you fly aswell, It has all the features a phone can have presently & that being such a compact phone. I hope the people who rate this understand this.
I bought a nokia5800 three months back...Tntially the firmware was not stable,I faced lot of retarts, hang etc...after that I did two firmware updates, one via nokia software updater and another one through FOTA.Now my firmware version was 21.X.X,Now my phone is performing very good and stable also
To all people who are having problems and bugs with their applications and OS in their Nokia 5800 XM, Nokia has released an upgrade Ver 21 some time back....The phone never hangs now (if it did earlier, not in my case)....The startup is also relatively quite quick....and picture quality is also said to increase (dunno how though).
Still the upgrade is said to have resolved quite a lot of problems....This upgrade for 5800 is said to be in the same league as Service Pack 1 for VISTA :)
Is your experts noticed the gap in the right hand top corner of the front panel closing ?
Nokia which was refusing this manufacturing defect now accepting this as a default ,which will allow ingress of moisture to the speakers and the panel.
Now Nokia has send a bulletin to all their nokia care center and my set is still with Nokia from the day one i bought.
hey your right... i thought i had dropped my set... thnx.. atleast i kno its not my faul.. hehe ... oh n by da way 2 all da users hea.. NOKIA 5800 is the best thing that ever happened to me in terms of battery, sound, applications, edge.... wateva.. so just buy it... its great...
Hi Mohit,
I am also planning to buy iphone 3g. Could you please tell me where did u get for 17k? my contact : 9370911900. I will be greatful to have this info from you.
Lol ... pple who say the 5800 is a bad phone = nubs in terms of mobile ... it had issues, 100% solved now ... build quality is not top notch, but its not bad either .. just that u dont get a metal finish makes the plastics body bad ?? lol .. nubs ...
The OS is fast and responsive. Upgrade to v20 firmware and it solves most minor issues, and drastically improves the camera. The only problem i've faced till now is with the playback of H.264/MP4 AVC videos, probably a beta support of some kind .. anyway ..
This phone, at its price point is a marvel .. A straight forward UI (albeit not even close to Iphone), a good camera and lots of neat features under the hood .. the Iphone has just too many shortcommings to beat this baby .. Nokia has done it again .
Agree with the good headphones part but the 5800 is definitely NOT Nokia's first touchscreen phone. There have been the Nokia 7710 and Nokia 6708 before, running Symbian Series 90 and UIQ 2.1 respectively. The 5800 is the first Series 60 touchscreen phone from Nokia.
Nokia has also made the N800 and N810 Internet Tablets running Linux OS in the past which had touchscreens.
have had it for a couple of weeks. updated the s/w recently. the screen orientation is a problem - jumps around; bundled earphones are terrible. using sony noise reducing - music quality awesone
browsing (non 3g - using edge) - no complaints
some interesting applications available including Mobbler for streaming music.
email client is pretty good (downloaded a exchange server sync client)
on the whole no complaints so far and my usage for emails, browsing and music (streaming and from device) has been very very extensive
of course camera is tricky-for indoor photos, really need to play with settings (ISO, white balance and exposure) to get decent pictures; default settings are terrible
touch screen quirky - iphone is far superior but 5800 cheaper so willing to live with it. so far also has not hung despite keeping multiple apps open simultaneously
I SELL MY 5800 AT RS 3000 LOSS..........NUKSAN HOGEYA .......I HAD USE ONLY 15 DAYZ ...............YES I HAVE ALSO GOT A LISTENING PROBLEM IN SET....................
I bought 5800 on 4th Jan and within a month, i am facing problem with the earpiece. I have spoken to NPD and they have admitted that IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM. I'll have to take the phone to Nokia Care to get it replaced. Even the software hangs and phone restarts often. Absence of basic tools like countdown timer, stopwatch is frustrating. I am not happy with this phone.
hi PArjit h r u man dont eb depress yar i allready faced same problem but now its ok AllhumduliAlllah just upgrade ur phone software from any nokia site upagraded it InshAlllah it will be come ok se u take care ta ta by by :D
Reviewer is Nokia biased. The phone doesn't deserve so much praise. Google it and you will find that Nokia USA has recalled all their initial sale phones in US b'cos of earphone issues.. same as u guys r writing. Please read between the lines folks..battery time is less than a day if u keep the accelerometer on Auto.. The screen aspect keeps changing in ur pocket when u sit or stand.
Symbian OS as a touch input is cheesy and primitive. Water accretion (from condensation) is also a major issue with these phones. Nokia Maps is buggy & expensive, u r better off with Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian in case u still want to retain this phone... I had this phone for 2 weeks (Bought for wife) realised that the candy bar was an overpriced piece of Cr*p. gave it back for a lower end 5310. Keep away from it like the plague
Hi,
Actually battery performance is depending on how much you use particular features. According to me it is great phone with attractive body shape and excellent battery backup.
Hi...Howz 5800 performing. I am planning to buy it but a bit worried after reading user reviews which says poor earphone, poor build up quality, poor camera etc...Pls advice whether I can go ahead with it...Just to get some advice from a persons who is using already...thanx..
@Deepa Kumar: I have been using it since the beginning of this month. It's v. good. Recommended certainly.
If you find that earpiece volume is on the lower side, take it to the nearest Nokia Care and it will be fixed within half an hour.
very bad set, Low volume, very expensive at the price 18k. no more utilities. volume is nothing but very less..
3.2 mp camera at 18k, it is also expensive
The earpiece problem will be fixed if you take it to your nearest Nokia care center.
How come you got the phone for Rs. 18,000? I thought I got the best deal at Rs. 18,800.
There are a lot of applications that you can download and install.
hahaha . . . come on i thought u guys were tech experts. . . . to quote the reviewer
"the 5800 XpressMusic could easily do with a much better camera (quality) if not a higher megapixel lens."
resolution depends on the sensor . . . i dunno which cam depends upon its optics for its resolution.
ps. general error. . . not expected out of apparent tech experts !
by the way the sensor megapixils also dont matter. its the size of the sensor that matteres the most for picture quality. if U have a small sensor U need to limit the megapixils to get good snaps!!!
PROS:
1. Attractive: The 5800 has a stunning design and grabs eyeballs wherever you go.
2.Touchscreen feels good and offers good feedback.
3. Music quality is among the best on any Nokia phone.
4. GPS/Nokia Maps is nifty but you will have to find your way through the application first and get used to it.
CONS:
1. Camera is a huge let down. If you want a phone that takes good pictures, this is definitely not it.
2. Too many bugs: My 5800 has gone for repairs twice in 2 weeks now, first to get the earpiece fixed and second, the battery was not chariging.
3. Third party apps limited: The phone's new, so it will still take a while for the apps to be developed.
I got a pre-book Nokia 5800 ExpressMusic on 4th Jan and within few weeks the front screen plastic mould began to come off, hoping to get a replacement from Nokia Dealer :(
i think thats not the plastic module.. thats only the screen protector thats coming out.. well thats not yet available in the market for 5800 but you can get a new one soon at the mobile store ..
i am facing a small issues like some times the mobile is showing different colors and all of sudden shuts down and
restarts again???? what this could be can any one tell me
I wonder where all these free videos are loaded in the phone? I only got the free songs! But having said that I am enjoying using the phone.the touch screen and accelerometer is good..though I wud have preferred a less fingerprint resistent build! (literally!)
Yeah. guys who prebooked paid 2k extra.... but we atleast got the free 4k worth sennheiser lx90 headset. .and the 1k worth vip pass to some concert by raghu dixit.. (got the headset, but not heard from nokia guys abt the concert pass yet)
The phone is retailing at themobilestore for 19200...they dont have the sens pack though...if u want that u can buy from NPD for 20500...i am using the phone for few days but there is a problem in calls....tthe voice keeps fading in and out....not the king of issue i would expect from a 20k phone but i hear its a small fix from a nokia service centre...let us see...
Hi Suren
I think you need to not just comment SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE saying this not the correct lens and that is not , PLease be complete dont comment in AIR
hi nice review there i agree to all the aspects u said except the build coz the phone build is just gr8 and typing in the qwerty keypad is just bliss as iam replyinb this from my tube.
No doubt, the best Touch Screen in the market (Leave alone iPhone coz its in diff orbit altogether). Nice package. Camera is a huge let down. Had I read this review before buying this one just two hours ago, i would have had many thoughts running my mind. But I think I would still be positve. And after using it, I find itz worth it.
