Expert Review

Nokia's success in the budget phone market is legendary. The ease of use, value for money and above all compatibility and customisation options make their budget phones hard to resist especially with the younger crowd. Nokia knows what the budget market needs and gives it to them. A couple of years back, buying a phone with a built-in FM radio would have left you short by around Rs. 12,000. But now with the camera phone revolution kicking in on overdrive, Nokia has introduced a new model with a built-in radio at a price that will be affordable for everyone.

Looks
The Nokia 2300 comes in two color schemes - a grey and black color scheme for the guys and a white one with pink and blue buttons obviously aimed at the female market. Both designs look stylish and very different with the unique button layout. I half expected the keypad to be practically unusable, but much to my surprise, it functioned quite well. The smooth surface of the keypad did cause a few annoying slips every now and then, but it wasn't as bad as one would expect from a keypad like this.

The phone is quite small and convenient to carry at 107 x 46 x 21 mm in size and 92 g in weight. The external shell consists of lightweight plastic, which can be replaced with other official or unofficial covers designed for the phone. The monochrome 96 x 65 pixel display has a resolution on 96 x 65 pixels with a lavender blue backlight, which keeps visibility high and is pleasant to look at.



Functionality
The Nokia 2300 contains all the basic features that you will find in other Nokia budget models. You can customise your phone by downloading ringtones, operator logos, screen savers, and picture messages. I personally really like the polyphonic ringer in this phone, as it sounds a lot better than the noisy ringers in other Nokia budget phones. As one can expect, there's a ringtone composer function that lets you compose your own monophonic melodies.

The built-in radio would definitely be the driving force behind the phone. The Nokia 2300 comes with a bundled stereo handset that doubles up as an FM antenna. It also has a hands-free function where you can play FM radio on loudspeaker and also use it as a speakerphone. The sound quality of the radio is quite good and clear, and I rarely encountered static even when travelling with it by a local train.

The Nokia 2300's application list consists of an alarm clock, calculator, countdown timer, stopwatch, and reminder functions, which are more or less the basic requirements from any cell phone these days. The picture editor function has been taken out in this one.





The phone's voice clarity and network coverage is pretty good, as it didn't falter even in low network areas. The battery life stays strong for around 4 days of regular usage.

Conclusion
At its street price of Rs. 5,000, the Nokia 2300 may be a bit pricey for a few since now you can get some older color screen phones for a price similar to that. But then, it all comes down to the kind of features and looks the end user prefers. The phone will definitely stand out of the crowd, the radio quality is pretty good, and overall, it does a pretty good job of being a functional phone. Just a word of caution - guys, please never go for the white and pink model of this phone unless you want your sexuality questioned by people around you.

I somehow dont like the keypad... Apart from that trusting Nokia is a big ask. I am using Nokia 6610 for almost a year now. I had to get it repaired twice, I know two more people who got their same models repaired. Nokia is definately going down in quality. 2300 could be still value for money product if they do something about the keypad. Looks really cheap!!!!!!!!

I bought this Nokia 2300 phone 1.5 year bask. Exactly after 1 year it stopped working ( blank screen) I got it software reloaded ( Rs. 400). Now after 3 months, it doesn't ring at all. I tried almost all settings, tried ring tone composing but no luck. I set it in vibrate mode. Fortunately that works but it is painful to pay atention al time. Anyone had suggestion/fix for the same. Yes, Nokia 2300 has a software problem.I faced exactly the same problem a year back and I replaced with a 3120. 3120 is a fine phone and is working good. As always, appearances (2300) are deceptive

I have purchased Nokia 2300 in july 2004 and it has hanged three times. it's true that it has a software problem which even local NokiaCare Center person agreed. Lately, any ringtone volume would go down after few days. A ringtone not used earlier would again give loud voice but would calm down in a span of time. Now no ringtone has any volume. I have decided to replace my cellphone and will definitely not recommend others to purchase this model.

Dont even think of it. my dad has got it for two years (its compnay cell phone), in 2 years it was replaced twice but each of the cell turned bad in few months, now he has been given 2600, which i recommend as a basic color phone. 2300 hangs a lot, ringer volume too low, radio is ok ,but if u just want radio then instead get 2600 and buy radio hansfree, u wont regret.

I have bought this phone a few days ago. Although its a nice phone with the brilliant FM Radio features but one lacking part of this is that it has very low ringing volume and vibration. Also the keys are jumbled up in the keypad which sometimes displays the wrong number when pressed. Its has good Battery time up to 4 days. In my opinion it would become a cool set if it has color screen.

Nokia 2300 with ist's new software in an excellent one, stasifing all its clamis, good battery life and good network coverage. The only problem is that if the kepad had been like the 2100 it would have been less tidious and the radio dosen't function quit good while traveling in buses or trains in suburban areas.

Nokia 2300 Sucks.. its a buggy product developed my nokia. u can see frequest restart of he pone. there wont be sound at times. u may not hear ring tones.. and the call gets cut automatically. naoki says to update the software but after that also the same problem exists. after 5 times of software pdate they exchanged the phone for a brand new 2300 but even that has the same problem. i wonder why nokia develop such phone.

Agreed T230 is better in Features (WAP, Personalized Rings, Recording, MMS, color 4,096... and more), but Delicate [I have this]. unless you want to listen FM or want a robust [you drop your set often, i do :( I am careless, see...] and high quality [loud sound + signal] and basic features only !!! ;) , then Nokia.

what good.......... huh i had purchased it in 6300 when it was launched from a priority dealer in delhi but the next day the another priority dealer in delhi itself is selling it in 5700. it should be morals Resposibility of NOKIA company to regulate evenness in prices atleast at priority dealers. Secondly i m not receiving messages from reliance and whenh i complained to them, they told that its the service provider probs or either i have to come to their C_care Center. Get an LG 3100, or Siemens A60, or Sony Ericsson T230 for just a little more. They each have a 4096 colour screen and a lot more features. OR spend just a bit more than these options for the Samsung C100 with a 65000 colour LCD screen! Nokia is selling horrible phones at high prices. They only sell because thay are called 'Nokia'.

No mention of memory. SMS capacity and features, phone book capacity etc. Being a budget phone the call register will hv 10 call each for dialed, recieved n missed. I agree wih sudeep that nokia is getting down in its quality at least for the Indian market for sure. 3100 and 2100 users are facing a lot of problems like hanging and sms delivery etc. If the trend goes on with the smart phones then nokia will soon be outcasted by companies like benq etc.`

Hi my mobile is 2300 Nokia, but the monophonic ringtone that i am downloading turns itself by default to a polyphonic one. I am not able to hear the monophonic tone any more as this polyphonic tone is not cathy! Could any one help me on this issue?

I bought this on 8.6.04 and after just 2 hours it stopped working. The screen was blank and the display disappeared. I have been using mobile since the last 8 years and I expected something beter from Nokia. It is disappointing to find such a defective piece coming out of the factory. This is unaceptable. I wouldnt recommend this to any one.

After 15 days of my purchase this set behaves eratically bu resetting automatically. After contacting Nokia service centre they said it is a firmware bug. The ver is 3.55. Now they are upgrading the ver. There is no ringtone when I receive calls. I feel I've taken a wrong decision by selecting this model. I also heard from Nokia service centre that 50% of this model gives similar problem.

It true that a phone with latest features with a good budget to get these days i have been using nokia mobiles for past 7 years when a operator called JTM was launched in karnataka i thank nokia R&D dept to work out a good mobiles for indian market and nokia and airtel makes the best pair believe me
