Nike Sport Digital Audio Player

Nike Sport Digital Audio Player

The PSA64 is a compact and sporty MP3 player for athletes and health freaks. But it's very little

Sleek design, Small size, Rugged construction.

No LCD panel, Limited storage space, Cannot copy-back stored data.

The PSA64 is a compact and sporty MP3 player for athletes and health freaks. But it's very little of anything else. Designed for athletes, this is a product that takes the attributes from two companies that have revolutionised their respective turfs. Philips, as just about everyone is aware of, is a consumer electronics giant that was instrumental in the making of the compact disk. Nike, as just about everyone is aware of, is a company that combines marketing hype and sweatshop labour into overpriced and irresistible objects of desire. Together, this tag team is out to create some of the most badass portable audio, and we got a little sampling of it.

Bling Bling!!!
When you're buying have an MP3 player designed by Nike, you're not only playing for features, you're paying for that intangible thing called cool. And this MP3 player has loads of mojo, baby. As far as the design goes, the PSA 64 player has the wow factor pinned down. It's not an MP3 player; really, it's a prosthetic, a cyborg upgrade, and a pacemaker all rolled into one. The Velcro armband and the magnets integrate the MP3 player to your body like second skin, you can jog to your heart out without skipping a beat.

The Playa
The PSA 64 is a small, light, turtle backed, sleek, water resistant player that looks quite similar to the original Nike MP3 player, sans the LCD panel (They ditched the panel to make it more power efficient). It can last up to 10 hours on an alkaline AAA battery, connects to the PC via a USB port, and supports the Mac platform as well. It supports MP3 and WMA, and a MP3 Pro firmware upgrade is on the cards, something that would be useful, given the limited storage capacity, and the lack of an expansion slot.

Product accessories included headphones, a remote, an armband, a USB cable, and the driver CD. The driver CD had the necessary drivers and Music Match jukebox for ripping Audio CD's. We gave this MP3 player more than its adequate test run, and we were pretty impressed. The sound quality was excellent, and the headphones fit snugly from behind your neck. I had no problems manoeuvring a crowded local train with this on, go I guess it is pretty rugged! We had a little problem switching the player on, you had to hold the play/pause button for a while to turn the player on/off. Limited storage space meant that we had to encode our MP3's at a lower bit rate, or have half an album fit in the 64 MB slot. Also, this player doesn't accept any other files, so it doesn't double up as a portable storage solution.(the Creative Nomad Muvo does this) Heck, you can't even copy MP3's from one PC to another using this.

Conclusion
If you’re an exercise freak and you’re thinking of a portable MP3 player, look no further. This player is meant for athletes and sports fanatics not geeks. If you’re a techie, you would probably want the ability to copy files into your MP3 player, instead of paying an extra 4-5 grand buying a separate thumbdrive. The PSA 64 is an excellently designed product that has loads of cool, but we geeks are looking for more utility value at 8,500 bucks.

I bought a nike mp3 player about 10 months ago, and now it doesn't work, I mean suddenly doesn't turn on, and the worst thing about this is that my vendor only gives me a 6 month warranty!! I paid about US$200 and what for?. It happens to me too with the first model of the nike mp3, (I think was by Rio audio). Conclusion: Nike sucks!!!!.... I will never buy again nike electronics.... They just looks "cool" but that's all.

I totally agree with Luis, my PSA broke twice in the first two months. The Phillips / Nike PSA is the biggest waste of money possible. To all who read this, don't bother buying this product cause Nike should stick to clothing and Phillips ... well they should just close down cause nothing else they make is any good either.

Firmware drivers for XP for PSA64, Model # ACT200/17 can be found at http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?ctn=ACT200/17&scy=&slg=ENG&tmplt=&SearchTxt=ACT200&grp=&cat=&sct= ***These drivers do not support secured WMA files. They have no fix for that.

Can't load PSA64 Drivers or Music Match Plug in on XP, MM says the latest version doesn't require plug in but system does not recognize the device. Anyone know where/how to get it working on XP w/out original CD? FYI~ Dell DJ works fine.

Hoe is playing the mp3 but is expensive much any chaep option is the avail???

by gunjan, rajasthan, on Apr 28, 2003 05:27 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Plenty of cheap options available. Stay away from these RAM based players and go for a CD based player at the minimum. One of those chinese VCD/MP3 portable players should only cost Rs. 2000-2500. But then cheap is not quality. Another way if you look, instead of spending 8000/- on one player, spend 2000/- on four players over the next four years.

Hey, I think this review and all the reviews on techtree are excellent for their technical and information value. The language edit, however, is something that could be looked into.

by Victor Rodrigue, Mumbai, on Jan 29, 2003 08:48 AM, Report abuse   Reply

I quite disagree. I think techtree has been rather disgraceful right from day one. I would rather read CHIP or DIGIT or even PCQuest instead of wasting my time on this bad website. And anyone who disagrees is a blinking moron.
