Napster is perhaps one of the most sensational software to have ever hit the Internet. It was the dawn of the concept of sharing music. The concept of using the P2P (peer-to-peer) platform to share music with an online community was an instant rave. Napster quickly got the music sales down and the outcry to ban the software was heard all over. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) pulled the shutters on Napster.

But then in late October of last year, Roxio Inc. bought up Napster, its domain name and all. Basing its own online music store on the lines of Napster, Roxio worked upon Pressplay and launched Napster 2.0. Roxio, which is best known for its CD burning software, hopes to give the Apple iTunes Music Store a run for its money by offering Windows-based music fans individual song download purchases at $0.99 each and full albums for $9.95. The company is also offering a subscription service at $9.95 a month that allows for "unlimited" downloads.

What's new?
Almost everything except the logo is new. Roxio has basically cashed-in on the Napster legacy and gone in for an online music store, which sits pretty much in-tune with the iTunes. Napster 2.0 only runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. So if your OS does not figure in the list, then you won't figure in its members list. The interface is very much different and much more evolved than the original one. To start with, it might look a bit complicated, especially if you are trying to feel at home, expecting the classic Napster interface. This one is much more detailed and visually inviting, with a very pleasant colour scheme and a very intuitive interface. Primarily, there are three sections labeled as home, browse and library.

Home takes you to the latest events and releases happening on the network. One can browse through all the latest releases as per the genre and explore the detailed world of updated music. The same section also houses an Internet radio, but it's a part of the Napster premium package, which can be yours for a price of course. Then comes the online magazine, "Fuzz", yes that's what it's called and it is a pretty cool add-on by itself. There is a message board, which again is a part of the premium package. By the way, the premium package costs $10 per month.

Moving on to the next section, "Browse", it is pretty self-explanatory. Browsing is simplified on the basis of artists, streaming, newly added, charts and member's collection. One can safely say that there is a lot to choose from and searching for a particular number or artist is a breeze.
