MotoYuva W180

MotoYuva W180

Pankhuri Bajaj, Dec 03, 2007 1131 hrs IST

Razr2 is for the classes, this one's for the masses.

Inexpensive, Good looks, Easy user interface, Personalized for Indians (in terms of language preference, wallpapers, and screensavers).

Average battery life, Poor handsfree connectivity, Text messaging is tiring, Keypad could be taxing for some.

Design

Unlike most of the latest Motorola phones, MotoYuva isn't a slim phone but it looks quite slick -- atleast on the face of it. The glossy and non-bumpy frontal makes it seem like a good deal for the price tag it holds.

An aside: I got my hands on this phone as soon as it hit the market. With majority of the junta unaware about the product then, I conducted a survey to find out its first impressions on random people possessing entry-level mobile phones. Almost all of them found the phone appealing, and even more so when they heard of its price. (End of an aside)

Unlike its glossy face, MotoYuva's rear has a matte finish -- a clean uninterrupted back, till your eyes hit the ugly "W180" embossed in bold white near the bottom. It may seem like pushing a cheap, entry-level phone's limits a bit, but that's one thing that I just did not like on its exterior.

MotoYuva is quite comfortable to hold. It has a large bright color screen and a keypad with non-protruding soft keys that seem integrated in the skin of the phone; all except for the 4-way D-pad and the main menu key that it encircles, are slightly puffed.

The keys are very convenient while pressing numbers, but it's not the same while composing a text message. Also, the keypad may not suit fat fingers overall.

Here's an illustration of what the keys are meant to do.

Press the "down" arrow on the D-pad while typing a message. It should solve the issue!

I own a new W230, which is more or less the same as W180. The exceptions are, W230 has a memory slot, transfer files from PC to the mobile. This phone (W180), although, doesn't measure up or come anywhere near the new toys in the market, there are always certain group of people who would go for such a phone. I beg to differ regarding the opinion on iTap functionality. You really don't have to press "select" to insert a word, you can even press "*" to insert a word into the message. Reviews such as this statement can be misleading. Most software professionals own this phone. Reason? No camera, has got all the required options, cheap.. what more do they require?

Well done Pankhuri. I remember being critical of your first article about MP3 players I think. This one is well written and down to earth in style. keep it up.

A 'special appreciation' for the writer for her statement... "Another thing, just because you'd have the speaker facility, you need not try to entertain everyone around you, it can be quite irritating."

Amen to that !

This review is quite different from the ones I am used to read on Techtree. Some parts are really nice, like the descriptions of various menus. Keep it up. Try to stay authentic like this in future.
