Moser Baer DVD/DivX Player (6988S)

Frazier Barretto, Feb 22, 2008 1447 hrs IST

It's decent, but it's got its share of codec issues

Sleek and lightweight, USB port and Card Reader, full-function remote

Fails XviD 1.1 and Quarter Pixel playback, poor USB port and Card Reader placement, poor LED display placement

Moser Baer is a world leader in media storage, and I'm sure you've used Moser Baer discs. The company built up their portfolio by entering movie CD / DVD sales, which seems to have worked well. It has now released a DVD / DivX player to penetrate the entertainment market further; we have the unit with us today -- the MB-6988S. A Moser Baer disc player does sound interesting; let's take a look.

The Bundle

Moser Baer MB-6988S
Remote (2 x AAA batteries)
Coaxial cable
Power cable
Manual
10-DVD pack

Specifications

Compatible formats: DVD, SVCD, VCD, CD, USB, Card Reader, MP4, MP3, A-CD, CD-R, CD-RW, JPEG
Full-function remote control
Dolby Digital support
DTS 5.1 (Digital Output only)
Signal to Noise Ratio: 90 dB
Power Voltage: 90V - 240V ~ 50/60 Hz

The Player

Sleek and lightweight, this player is smaller than the other DVD / DivX players available. It has a sliding front, which features an LED display on the left and three buttons on the right: two are for playback (Play/Pause and Stop), and one is for tray open/close. The tray mechanism is pretty sturdy.

Can anyone answer this - Does USB support means it can also support usb HDD's? Because manufacturers tend to ignore this.. Or do we have test each player and see if it supports USB HD? ( I have a palyer which also supports USB HDD)

No this Player is confirmed not to support USB HDDs. USB support for Flash cards only my friend NOT for USB HDD, coz USB HDD cannot be powered on. I tried powering on with comp USB and then at the same time attaching the other connector to this player...it still doesnt work but the entire player gets powered on by this methos...weird eh!

I purchased this model thinking that it will support USD HDD, while purchasing also asked the dealer about it. He said it will support USB HDD and flash drive both. But when I checked it by plugin my USB HDD it couldn't read any file from there. I tried with 2GB Flash drive, it could read from that. I couldn't understand why it is not able to read from USB HDD although my HDD gets power on when I plug it in the USB port as it doesn't require any external power.

USB port is a must these days. Considering the pains in burning the cd and flash memory becoming cheaper, bigger USB is the way to go..

I think its a good move by moserbaer. At this price, this machine offers quite a bit. Dont think that at this price this machine would have a good D/A, but if its doing the job, then what the hell???
