Microtek ScanMaker 3800

Microtek ScanMaker 3800

Jaison Lewis, Dec 19, 2002 0000 hrs IST

An entry level Microtek USB scanner for the home.

Cheap, Good features

Not clear, Slow

A scanner in every home seems to be the mantra with the scanner companies these days, with scanners available for even the most modest budget. This scanner targets the budget level consumer who's looking for something that will digitize his photo albums.

A Quick Scan

The scanner uses the standard white grey combo, and still manages to come out looking stylish, although it‘s a little larger than then other sleeker models out there. The ScanMaker 3800 is lighter than most scanners weighing just 2.7 kilos. There are five buttons in the front each of which has an automatic function of scanning in a particular mode. The 3800 can scan up to an optical resolution of 600x1200 dpi at 48-bit colour output. It can scan up to the size of 8.5 X 11.7 inches. It does not scan transparencies, but supports an adapter that does the same.

To check the capabilities of the ScanMaker 3800 we ran a couple of tests. We ran a high resolution leaf scan test to check the detail capture capabilities and clarity. Though the scanner had all the colours right, it produced a picture which wasn't very sharp and took more time that the HP Scanjet 2300c. The speed was also a problem in the time test, it took a total of 2.22 minutes to scan a paper of 8.5 X 11.7 inches at the highest optical resolution of 600 dpi. We did the vinyl scan test using our trusty 5 star wrapper. The output had lots of artifacts caused by excessive light reflection at several places and the final output was totally destroyed. Similar results were observed in the metallic artefacts scan and the circuit board scan. The overall out put clarity of all scans was bad.

The bundled scanning software, ScanWizard 5 did not impress much even in its advanced mode. The software couldn't accurately detect object edges to set scan regions hence most of the scans needed user intervention to set the regions properly. The software had some presets that would make it easier for a novice to use the scanner. The software in the standard mode looks good and the interface is skinnable. The view proved to be very annoying because every time you did a preview, the settings were permanently changed to 96dpi. The advanced mode is better than the standard mode in this respect, and has no such problems. We feel the scan software's of BenQ and HP are way better and easier to use.

Conclusion

The scanner has the lowest price we've seen yet of Rs.4300/-, and is covered by a 1 year warranty. If you just want something cheap and are not really bothered about the quality then this is a good buy.
