I finally got my hands on the MGS4. After reading tons of teasers and previews, and watching trailers for almost two years, I finally get to play The Game. Being a true MGS fan, one who has played every game in the Metal Gear Solid series, (barring the game cube version) this was quite an event for me.

The Metal Gear Solid series celebrated its 20-year anniversary this year. This excellent series has been mesmerizing gamers for 20 years and has a huge cult following. The original Metal Gear game invented the stealth genre and started a revolution that resulted in many games both from this series as well as other developers. Before I get into my initial impressions about the game, I want to list some facts about the series. One important note before we start: Please don't start a flame war comparing the Xbox 360 and the PS3, it's time we got over that issue. In my opinion, Hideo Kojima and PS3 have created probably the most impressive visual experience ever, but that does not mean we should flame the Xbox 360. (Come on, we all ogled at Gears of War, didn't we?) Both are equally impressive and deserve the same amount of respect. These are just initial impressions about the game that is really long, with some 18-20 hours of gameplay, so wait for the full review.


Following are some of the MGS facts that you should know:

  • When Hideo Kojima first briefed Konami about his Metal Gear ideas, they rejected them saying a game about sneaking will never work.

  • The series often has a very subtle theme that raises concerns over worldly issues like Nuclear war and Genetic Engineering (for war).

  • The series is known for its larger-than-life characters, especially Solid Snake, their emotional bonding, the really intense single-player plot that can seem intimidating to new players.

  • Solid Snake, the character, has been felicitated with numerous awards and is regularly listed in iconic gaming character features.

  • The boss battles in every MGS games are the true highlight of the game, the first Playstation game called Metal Gear Solid was known particularly for its boss fight with Psycho Mantis. This was a unique experience, as the boss had psychic powers in the game, and to show off that skill, Mantis would read the content of the player's memory card, see how many times he has saved the game and what other games he plays. He could also predict the player's movements towards objects and dodge his attacks. To eliminate him, one had to remove his controller and plug it in the other slot. This change would result in Mantis not being able to read your movements and making it easier for the player to eliminate him.

  • MGS 4 was a highly anticipated game before its 16th June release date, so much so that there was speculation that the game needed to sell more than million copies on the first day to recover costs. In reality, it sold more than 1.5 million after its release.

  • MGS 4 is the first game ever to use a 50 GB Blu Ray to its full capacity.

    the game is region locked so it will not work on PS3 from different region, BTW Mr reviewer whrer do you get your PS3 stuff from,just curious

    I have a PS3 in US with this game. Will this game work on PS3 from India cause of region coding? Also, will the PS3 console from US work in India?

    yeah it would work but as for the ps3 you would have to have a convertor for your adaptor because in india whats the voltage .. in us the voltage is 110 i think so before plugining your ps3 use adaptor which converts 110 volts to 220 volts otherwise it will fry your ps3.. any ps3 game would work on any region because its region free..

    thanks qab...but I have seen videos on YouTube which shows PS3 of US having 120V being played directly on 240V in Asia and UK without the convertor. You think it would be true??

    What nonsense! MGS4 is not region locked! infact none of the ps3 games are locked! get ur facts right. I am playing the game with a US copy on a ps3 bought in india.
