MSN Live Suite

Google Desktop, Facebook and many more have been doing something similar for some time now. But you can't leave Microsoft behind, can you?

Introduction

The recently launched Windows Live Suite has created waves in the online community. For a change Microsoft has come up with something that really looks good, performs a lot of functions, and is free. Yeah, that's right, it's FREE.

Here's a take down on what's being offered.

The following apps are included in the Windows Live Suite of services,

Hotmail
Mail
Messenger
Toolbar
Photo Gallery
Writer
OneCare Family Safety

Now, we all know about Hotmail, the Messenger, and the Toolbar. So, let's just stick to talking about the new stuff here, shall we?

Mail

Communication. That's been the mantra everywhere since time immemorial. But in this day and age of flaunting and uncountable number email IDs (one for friends, family, office, etc), it's become dearly difficult to remember each of those accounts (in case you don't get the same username everywhere) or their passwords. Personally, I find myself clicking on the "I forgot my password" link more than I'd like.

The mail client from Windows Live Suite, called the Windows Live Mail, is a boon for those with multiple email accounts. It allows you to link all your POP email accounts into a single Windows Live account and gives you offline access to mails; very much like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, or Windows Mail for Vista. I know, Gmail too provides you with the same features, then why this?

For starters, this looks and feels better. Also, it's not just about emails; you can also sign into and use your Windows Live Messenger, create a blog entry or send a mobile message, all from a single application.

Apart from emails, you can now integrate all your RSS feeds and newsgroups into Windows Live Mail (much like OS X Leopard's Mail app). Since it's based on the Windows RSS Platform, anything you subscribe to using IE7 is automatically available in Windows Live Mail as well.
It also provides a huge list of options and settings that you can tinker around with till you get what may be termed as a 'perfect' mail manager.

Also, Windows Live Mail automatically takes care of the account settings if you're adding an email account from a popular mail service like Gmail, Rediff, Yahoo (premium users only), etc. All you need to do is provide your username and password.

Like its online-only counterparts, Windows Live Mail provides spam and virus filters for all added email accounts.

I'd almost consider using the stuff if it weren't for all of the flashy banner ads all over the place. Are they trying to give every epileptic seizures or attention deficit disorder? I'll stick with the cleaner less cluttered interface of Google's apps until Microsoft and Yahoo get out of the 90's mentality and learn this.

So you must think that this site still has that mentality as well. ;P All I see are flashing ads every time I visit here...which might I add, is less and less each month.
