MSI Wind

MSI Wind

Rohan Naravane, Jul 21, 2008 1720 hrs IST

The MSI Wind is an impressive netbook for someone who needs an ultra portable computer for regular tasks like web browsing and multimedia.

Good 10-inch screen, Comfortable keyboard (for a Netbook), Very good battery life, 80 GB storage space, Good performance, Windows XP bundled.

A bit expensive, Build quality could have been better.

Specification Sheet

A unique feature to this Netbook is the instant overclocking feature. By switching it on, the processor gets a 300 MHz speed bump for some extra juice. But it can only be activated when it is running on a power supply since overclocking while on battery could put a dent on the battery life. Another addition that wasn't available in initial Netbooks is Bluetooth connectivity that is added in the Wind

How can you give it a 4.5 points ?? You yourself said on page 6, that one should not load Vista on this laptop, then what good is it for future ? In your words, this will become crap(or already has) within 2 years of buying, when microsoft completely phases out XP. Please REVIEW your suggestions, Techtree suggestions are very very vital for a consumer.

by Ashish, Delhi, on Jul 22, 2008 12:30 AM, Report abuse   Reply

I did say that one should not load Vista on this machine, but I fail to understand how can that be taken as "this will become crap within 2 years" Windows XP can run all current-day applications. It is a known fact that Vista has failed as a mainstream OS. The only good things about Vista that will really matter to people is the interface overhaul and DirectX 10 (which anyway wouldn't matter since the Wind does not have a DX10 capable GPU nor is it meant for heavy-duty games) Also, Microsoft has claimed that it will continue selling XP copies to Netbook vendors like Asus and MSI even after the official XP phase-out since they also know that Vista is going to be too heavy for such machines. Thus, it was just my recommendation not to load Vista on the Wind although it is technically capable of running it. I don't see how that is going to hamper the functionality of the Wind after two years. And for 25k, this is the best Netbook one can get today, thus it deserves the 4.5 stars.

I can't but agree outright with Rohan. Even HCL Mileap V comes with similiar hardware, although with a 800 Mhz processor and it is reported to run Vista without any hiccups, although I firmly believe loading XP into it will give even better performance. Moreover, there's always Linux that you can load into it. Linux can handle everything this netbook is designed for and requires much less resources to run.

i did not buying the HCL myleap because it came with a Vista. The OS is more imp. than anything. Forget the fact that MyLeap can run Vista without a hiccup, Vista is THE hiccup. Yuch. I use a fast (2GB) HP duocore TX 1301 tablet. The only issues I have had are on account of Vista. I completely agree with the reviewer. Vista is a failed OS. As of today its the only thing that gets by blood to boil.

Rohan Naravane U have really misquoted the price of this MSI wind with 6 cell batt and windows xp loaded at 23k plus tax-- pray where the heck is this available- or is this a spl. price for techtree staff ? have tried every where- but no MSI wind at this price !

by vijayshimla, Shimla 171001, on Aug 09, 2008 11:00 AM, Report abuse   Reply

I was, too, skeptical about the pricing. But that was the quote that was officially given to us at the time of the review by the company. Good luck in your quest.

The best price I am seeing is one posted by a Delhi guy for msi wind from nehru place delhi for rs 24440 inclusive all taxes with 3 cell battery. and perhaps linux. i think TT should be very firm with MSI while they are giving pricing- they should quote the market price and not just a hypothetical price to hook ppl.

Has anybody been able to get a real market quote for MSI Wind 80GB windows xp -with 6 cell battery( same as reviewed above )-around 23k plus VAT or is this all all a whiff of imaginary wind. I M seriously interested in getting one as my constant travel companion!!

by vijayshimla, Shimla 171001, on Jul 28, 2008 07:20 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Amazing device. I will surely like to get one of these. One thing which is missing in this complete sub-notebook is a cd/dvd drive. So installing software or watching a movie will be difficult. Never the less I will still opt for this device as I really can do the same with an external optical drive if there is a need.

A good review with quirks. [1] While the author recommends windows over Linux, I suspect he has ever used Linux especially when recommending Wind for "web browing, multimedia and productivity applications". Linux has progressed so much that pretty much every major PC maker is bundling it. I recommend the author use Linux before comparing it with anything else. [2] Mentioning boot speeds is useless unless you also mention that windows to be actually usable takes another minute or two to load all the anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-malware, windows updates icon, IM task icons, sound manager/display manager icons . so on and so forth. while Linux is useable immediately at login thereby the boot is quite slow on a windows machine.. BTW, your word verification is horrible to get it right even for a human!

I am definitely in market for MSI Wind- can anybody let me know 2 things ( reviewer should have answered these questions in review only! ) 1. Where is it available for 23k plus tax ( what tax -Vat is 4% on laptops)- Aftersale service available where ? does MSI have any service set up out side of Metro Cities ?

by Taipan, Kangra, on Jul 22, 2008 10:03 AM, Report abuse   Reply

MSI wind is every thing a UMPC needs to be- and seems to be very competitively priced at 23k plus VAT ( this is almost US price !)- BUT i am waiting for Eee PC 1000H with a 7.5 Hr battery- and perhaps better Service back up from Asus. ( when o when r U asus jumping into fray!!)
