We tested the Lexmark Z705 last week, it's a printer that has bigger cartridges and can support larger print pages, and borderless photo printing. It's meant for the home user, though it's a bit more expensive and high end. The Z605, on the other hand, is the absolute budget end printer in the mix; in fact it's the cheapest thermal inkjet printer that we've reviewed. Before you ask "BUT WHAT IS THE PRICE??" lemme break it to you right now, instead of saving it for the end: Rs. 2595.
So, what do I get for Rs. 2,595?
It's quite obvious that this printer is targeted at the home user, and has quite a bit of features that aren't available in the low-end printers from other manufacturers.

The box ships with the following components: The Z605 Colour Jetprinter, a power supply with cord, a USB cable, Setup Sheet, Online User's Guide, Installation Software CD (Drivers and Software), Moderate-Use High Resolution Colour Cartridge (#27), Moderate-Use High Resolution Black Cartridge (#17).
Weighing in at 1.7 kg and measuring 403 x 215 x 134 mm, it's small enough to fit on your desktop, especially because the loading trays are retractable. The Z605 has the same black and grey colour scheme as the Z705, except that it's not as sleek; it's more geometrical than curvy. It just has one button for powering the printer on; there are no LEDs, or indicators of any sort. That's about it. I won't use any more adjectives comparing it to the female body, because it's just a printer, and anyone who is too concerned about the aesthetics of a printer is a little weird. Like the ATI fanboys who rejoice because Half Life 2 beta benchmarks give better frame rates on their beloved 9800 Pro.
Like the Z705, the adapter is placed inside the printer, rather than at the other end of the power cord. It has a separate paper feed and a collector, unlike the HP DeskJet 3325, which uses the same feed for input and output. The Accu-Feed paper handling system eliminates paper jams, and you can safely cram in a 100 pages in the feeding tray. It connects to the PC via the USB port, and like the Z705, has no printer port option. (Get with the program; get a USB card if you don't have a USB slot!)
Setting up the Z605 was a breeze; the Quick Start guide should be helpful if you have any issues with that. All we had to do was power the printer, pop the CD in, install the drivers, connect the USB cable to the PC, and run a few calibration tests.
Print Tests
The package advertises a print resolution of up to 2400 x 1200 dpi in black, and a colour resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. We ran a series of tests to check if it could do that. Our tests gauged printer resolution, sharpness, reproduction and photo printing quality, text readability and sharpness, and print speeds.
At the colour photo print test, the printer did a reasonable job, though there were smudges as the colours overlapped in some areas. At the black and white pattern tests, there was quite a bit of smudging, very much like the Lexmark Z705. We were able to read till the 2-point font in the multi-sized font test, upon magnification, the 1-point font showed half eaten text.
At the speed tests, the Z605 managed to print at the rate of 9.6 ppm, the paper tray had trouble hanging on to all the printouts at that speed. It's pretty fast, faster than the Epson Stylus C41SX, and the HP DeskJet 3325, both of which fall pretty much into the same price category.
The Z605 supports all Windows operating systems from 98 to XP, and also has support for the Mac OS X. Replacement cartridges can be purchased for Rs. 799 for black cartridges and Rs. 899 for colour. Lexmark provides a 1-year door-to-door warranty, and if you haven't read the review and you want to know the price: Rs. 2595.

LEXMARK cartridges are very costly and not readily available; refilling old ones doesn?t really work. For inkjets, the cost of ink has the biggest impact on the overall cost of the printer over time. Usually, the cheaper a cartridge is, the less ink it holds; Yields range from about 200 to Max 300 pages. Printer Manufacturers makes money only through selling cartridges and that big printing machine, buyer takes out of the box is for free. I am one of several Victims of Inkjet printers, who went on buying it without proper market research and today it comes out to be total waste of money, when I need to replace a both cartridges (color +BW). If I added little extra buck to what I will spend buying this inkjet cartridges, I can buy an personal laser Printer from (HP, cannon or Xerox) as for regular printing jobs Laser printers are most cost effective (costing less than Rs 1/- per page)
