Lexmark is a well known brand which specializes in printing equipment. It is among the top five names in the PC printer industry. Apart from dot matrix and inkjet printers, they also make laser and multifunctional devices.

First Impressions..

The Lexmark Z25 is an entry level inkjet color printer that looks great and has compact design. Like most of their range of printers from recent times, this one too uses the top loading mechanism to load and feed the paper. A small power adapter box is provided, which is inserted into the back of the printer. Software, drivers and black and white and color ink cartridges are all bundled in, along with accessories like the power cord and the USB connecting cable. The installation was very easy, thanks to the well documented manuals. We encountered no problem installing the cartridges in their proper places and were very pleased with how well they locked in place. Lexmark has taken pains to ensure that their ink cartridges will not leak or dry.

After setting up the printer we ran the printer wizard. It asked us to identify the type of ink cartridge installed in the printer. That’s because Lexmark supplies different types of ink cartridges, for moderate and standard use. So to give you the best results (printouts) the wizard asks to identify the type of cartridge. The printer supports a maximum color and black & white print resolution of 1200x1200 dpi, and speeds of 9 black & white ppm (pages per minute). The Z25 can only handle up to A4 paper sizes.



Does it have the minerals?

We ran the printer through extensive test prints to judge the quality of the printer. Color reproduction and sharpness is always high on our list. In our black & white resolution test the gray’s had a slightly bluish tinge to it. The black & white text resolution test was reasonable. While the one point text size (the smallest) was readable, it was slightly better on the For an entry level printer the photo print tests were decent. On the CMYK and RGB test we found the colors to be bright, but the printouts showed some banding. The overall picture quality of printouts was slightly grainy, but the color representation in all printouts taken was fine. We were able to finish the 20 paper printer speed test in two minutes and forty seven seconds, which is not bad at all. Plus, the printer was able to pick up one paper at a time from the paper tray without any problem.

The Lexmark Z25 does well in most of tests and is a very good choice for an entry level printer. Though this printer does not have the best print quality in its category, it still is a very good printer for its price. Lexmark Z25 is currently selling at Rs. 3500/- and comes with a one 1 year warranty.

Please help.... the Lexmark z25 works perfectly with my one laptop (Win98) but refuses to work on my newer HP (WinXP). I have downloaded the XP driver from the Lexmark website - plus the patch - no improvement. What is the matter? I have other HP printer drivers installed - could this be conflicting?

To reinstall your printer drivers, please go to http://www.lexmark.com to download drivers if you have lost your CD. Most Lexmark printers are connected to a computer through the USB cable that came with them. Usually with the printer hooked up, Windows will find it, but ask for the driver. If you download them from Lexmark, they are usually in an .exe format, which is self extracting. Just point the hardware wizard to the directory that the files went to or have it search for them and it will do the rest. I hope this helps.
