Buying a scanner and a printer separately can turn out to be a major pain.
Good scanner, Cost effective in the short-run
Slow printer, Bad print quality, Bad print economy
Black and White Resolution Test: We printed an EIA Resolution chart (1956), containing high-contrast vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines as well as curves of various sizes.
Result: The overall print quality was pretty grainy, and the grey color had a bluish tinge. Once again, all black lines had reddish outlines.
Time Taken: 26 minutes 35 seconds
Color Test: We printed a sheet with gradients of RGB and CMYK bands, which start from the darkest shade to the lightest, eventually fading to white.
Result: All the color bands were slightly grainy and the black band showed terrible banding in both the horizontal as well as the vertical prints. The Yellow and the Cyan bands showed traces of purple in some areas.
Time Taken: 21 minutes 4 seconds
Border Test: This document contained lines stretching out all the way to the edge of the document, to test the printer's borderless printing capabilities.
Result: The Lexmark X1150 did not support full borderless printing. It left a half-centimeter gap from all edges except the bottom edge where it left a half-inch gap.
500 dpi Image Test: We printed a 500 dpi image with minute details and varying colors.
Result: The colors were very inaccurate and the overall print was grainy.
Time Taken: 22 minutes 23 seconds
600 dpi Image Test: Same as the 500 dpi test, only done with a higher resolution (600 dpi) image.
Result: Just like the 500 dpi print test, the color reproduction was pretty bad with a noticeable amount of graininess.
Time Taken: 25 minutes 11 seconds
Speed Test: Here we printed 20 identical documents at normal quality and then calculated the printer's speed in documents per minute.
Result: The printer was capable of printing 6.3 pages per minute, which isn't bad at all considering the printer gave the worst print speeds in all of the above tests.
Print Run: Normal quality prints were taken of a document containing some amount of text and a multi-color image to test the cartridge life of a printer.
Result: 180 total pages in one cartridge lifespan.
As you can see from the above test results the printer aspect of the MFD was pretty much one of the worst we've seen, not only in the print quality, but also in speed and print capacity per cartridge. Taking the costs and the cartridge capacity in mind, the print economy comes to Rs. 9.98 per page, which isn't too good, considering that MFDs are mainly used at offices as an all-in-one solution.

got the answer from someone on another site yay!! Not sure this will be of much help, but I have the same issue with an HP 2175.. Lexmark is probably like HP in the fact that they didn't release new software for old printers for Vista.. But, there is some good news.. (well in my case and hopefully for you) Vista has built in software for scanning and copying.. It's located in the Windows Photo Gallery. Here is the method I use for my HP.. Maybe it will work with your Lexmark.. Good Luck!

I've just upgraded to Vista Basic, The Scan driver for the lexmark x1185 isn't part of the vista update driver package, does anyone know where i can get a scan driver or some other way of making my scanner work.
