Dolby Surround on a laptop... is that a valid selling point here?

Sharp, borderless screen, good keyboard and touchpad, Dolby Surround, TV tuner

Poor performance, large, heavy, expensive

Layout and Design

The IdeaPad Y510 looks stunning; if you thought only the lighter and smaller laptops had charm, the Y510 can prove you wrong. The lid has a texture matte finish -- an abstract "waves" design -- and with the chrome Lenovo branding, it looks elegant.

To the right is a slot-loading optical drive, which adds to the elegance. Along the sides, you'll notice a TV Tuner along with LEDs that denote the battery status (like those seen on Macs), power, adaptor plugged in, and Wi-Fi status. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on via a switch at the front.

The sharp screen has had its borders stripped off; a 1.3MP camera sits above the screen. It uses Lenovo's proprietary VeriFace technology.

The keyboard, Lenovo says, is ergonomic, and it is indeed very comfortable, as is the touchpad, which is very comfortably placed, giving you sufficient wrist space. The border around the keyboard has meshes; behind them hide four speakers for the Dolby Surround, and a subwoofer is on the underside.

Now a subwoofer on a laptop is a bit too much, I thought, and when I played some music, there weren't any signs of a sub thumping. Design-wise, the subwoofer will collect dust over time, and could cause the parts to get choked, starting with the sub itself.

In terms of multimedia controls, there are soft-touch buttons above the keyboard, one set for playback and another set for equalizer presets. These come to the foreground alternately with the press of a button beside the volume control.

Above the Power/Standby button, at the left of the keyboard, is a button named "Novo"; it lets you switch between battery profiles -- High, Medium, and Low performance. Another new feature I noticed was the capability to switch between two screen resolutions with a Function combination key.

Though having CORE2DUO PROCESSOR- Be warned this laptop is built on a out dated Intel Mobile 945GM Express chipset mainboard- with GM 950 video- virtually worthless & discarded by intel long time ago & now replaced with Santarosa with X3100. Not worth the price being asked for. U can get a Santarosa based Core2duo Laptop for 32k. Why TT is reviewing an obsolete product of 2006 in 2008 is not understandable.

X3100 is stil not in the markets ...plus the new chipset is yet to hit the Indian stores ....in such a scenario can v ask for Vijay Shimla brand of motherboards and chipsets plz ....!!??

Graphics card useless ( should have been atleast Intel GMA 3100 ), memory less, any webcam.. for the same price a Dell XPS notebook would be a good choice.

They should have added the track point. For the price one pays, you expect few more useful stuff.

definitely the price is on a higher side and not worth the product. with that price u can get a good dell laptop with performance and in various colours. or one can always go for sony viao too.
