LaCie Mobile Disk 120 GB

It's a decent performer, and the bundle's good -- but is it too pricey?

All cables provided, decent speeds, good software bundle

Too expensive

The Drive
The unit consists of a metallic casing with a powder-coated black matte finish. It appears like a rather ordinary casing, but seems to be strong (more on this later). It weighs just 170 gm, and is sleek enough to slip into a (deep) pocket.

The drive has a lone USB 2.0 mini port, a power socket, and an indicator LED

At the front of the casing is one miniUSB port and one power socket, to which you can connect the provided USB power cable. This would be in case your computer's USB port to which the data cable is connected is not capable of supplying enough power for the drive's motor. There's an LED to indicate data transfer.

Inside the unit is a Western Digital Scorpio WD1200BEVS SATA-I hard drive. This is a 5400 rpm drive, and has a healthy 8 MB of buffer for seamless data transfer. The Scorpio range of drives is fast, silent, and cool-running. They also feature a mechanism to safeguard data by parking the head while it is not in use -- especially important for a portable drive that will be carried around.

120 GB is good enough for practically all things -- such as a backup of the data on a single PC, or exchanging music, movies, and games with friends. The drive is secured to the casing at the edges with screws, and there is a buffer free space left between the casing wall and the hard drive. This will no doubt keep the drive from harm's way if something happens and the drive is struck on its walls, but we can't say if it will be that safe when the drive takes a hit on the edges, as it will usually be in the case of a fall.

The LED emits an irritating, eye-piercing glow

When we connected the drive to out test rig, the first thing we noticed was the LED glow - it is a painfully eye-piercing blue, so powerful that we guarantee it will light up your room at night. Not a good thing!

What a piece of kraap. LaCie seems headed the iomega way. Overpriced and finally out of market. They barely have a foothold in today's market with WD and Seagate ext solutions dominating. Wonder who would buy this.
