LG KF510

The LG KF510 is high on style, but does it deliver on all counts? Read on to find out.

Big on Style, Reasonably priced, 3 megapixel camera, Touchpad navigation.

Low battery life, Fingerprint magnet, Low support for video formats, Low amplification of sound in the music player.

Design & Build Quality

The KF510 is definitely an eye-catcher. The phone has a slider form-factor, which is pure style. Add to this an all-metal exterior, a dual-tone color scheme and a 2.2" screen and you get a phone with serious flaunt value. The touchpad is camouflaged as a plain metal strip below the screen and comes to life dramatically when you put in the battery and turn this beauty on.

The SIM card and memory card are given some unique locations. The SIM card is inserted in a tray that slides out from the top-right corner of the battery compartment. The memory card, is hidden when the slider is closed, is hot-swappable and is inserted in a slot next to the camera.

On the left hand side of the phone are the volume control buttons and a lanyard at the top left corner. On the right, there's the connector port, the power/ call end toggle and the MP#/camera button. As you can see, there is a lot of multi-functionality on this side of the phone. The connector port serves a dual purpose of connecting the phone to your PC as well as charging the phone via the bundled charger. The toggle basically performs all the functions of the call end button on other phones. Holding the toggle down for four seconds powers up/ powers down the phone, and may also be used to disconnect a call or to quickly get out of an application. The camera/ MP3 key starts the MP3 player when pressed normally and starts the camera when held for two seconds.

When closed, the back of the phone is stylish, but boring. The 3.0 megapixel camera along with the accompanying flash and self-portrait mirror are located here. Next to this is the MicroSD memory card slot. On the right hand side, is a small well-camouflaged hard boot port.

The 2.2" display screen is big, bright and quite clear in sunlight. Finally, we come to the highlight of this phone, the touchpad. The touchpad definitely adds to the style quotient of the phone but does it do more than a normal D-Pad? Well sadly, no. While the touchpad of the KF600 also acts as an extension of the screen and offers handwriting recognition, this touchpad just gives you a fancy way to navigate through your menus and play games. There is a matrix of lights below that light up depending on the buttons you are pressing. The touchpad itself is a delight to use. The response time for the touch pad is good and takes some getting used to. LG has provided for hyper-sensitivity of the touchpad and included a mechanism to disable the touchpad after 12 seconds of non-usage.

The metallic finish gives the phone a very sturdy build. While the phone is small and slim, it's no lightweight. When closed, the weight is well-distributed along the length, but when opened, it's noticeably top-heavy. The lid covering the connector port swings open upwards and mars the look of the phone when open. Getting the cover to swing open downwards would've interfered with the sliding mechanism. The best option would have been to relocate the port to some other part of the phone.

There is a chance of accidentally deleting a call due to the toggle but LG has provided for it - the toggle doesn't delete the call without asking for confirmation.

The keypad is great, with large and ergonomically designed keys. With this keypad, you're never going to have an issue with mistyping a key.
