Most of us have memory cards for their mobile phones or digicams. Now even while these cards do provide decent amount of storage, they can't really be used to transfer data. I'm referring to transferring data from your PC to your friends PC. You'd have to carry your card reader along with you and if you don't have the card reader, then it's the device plus the cable to connect to a PC. You may feel that the card's ability is limited to saving images captured or storing mobile phone data. The Kingston DataTraveler Reader is more or less the answer to that problem, though it's not the first of its kind. It is just that Kingston, one of the major memory manufacturing companies sees the potential of this design.

Bundle

Let's start off with the bundle which is a basic for almost all flash/thumb/pen drives. It includes:

DataTraveler Reader

Handstrap

Concept

The Kingston DataTravler Reader is basically a flash drive with an added feature of capacity upgrades. The capacity can be upgraded by slotting in a memory card into the drive which has a compartment that opens like the trunk of a car and you slide in the memory card. Only two formats of memory cards are accepted by the drive: MMC and SD. The other variants of the SD namely: the miniSD, microSD and MMC variants like the RS-DVMC also work, but with an adaptor. These card formats being the most common for most devices like cameras and mobile phones makes them the most ideal. But if you ask me, I'd like to see support for Sony Memory Card formats as well.

When we connected the DataTraveler Reader to our PC, it showed up as a Removable Drive and the Card Reader as a separate drive. There was no need for drivers to be installed for either the drive or the card reader of the drive, simple plug-n-play. There is a small LED that blinks on the occasion of an activity and stays on whenever the drive is connected. It has a detachable cap to cover the USB port of the drive.

to hell with sony. Does this drive support Vista Readyboost? If not then to hell with this drive as well!

stupid reviewer add the average price of a (good) card reader to the average price of a (good) 2GB drive, and a small premium for the sheer innovation of the idea. it is justified

See.. People are smart & they will always check for compatibility when they purchase some product. Also I don?t agree that only SONY product gives better performance. If u open a SONY product u will find same hardware inside as used by other vendors. Also in near future I will not be surprised to see SONY supporting SD/MMC/microSD formats. Bcso Just like other vendors they want to sell their product.

good device!!Why do u want sony support also ? Sony is an exclusive and monopoly, it does not share its ideas and devices with others in the world because they want the sole advantage. We in hindi say they want the "pura laddoo" they do,nt want to share it with the world.

I agree completely with Bipin. Sony is a company known to keep its technology for itself. It is only because of pressure from the non usage of the format that sony will open its technology. The rest of the companies have often done that to sony. In instances where they have not, sony with its penchant for patents and trademarks has failed with its products. Take the mini disc for instance... With today's technological longevity!! no one should be allowed to patent stuff for more than a couple of years.

hello? sony does not need to share their ideas with the other companies of the world! they do not need to first put in huge investment for R&D and then share there stuf with the world! lol... they make quality stuff and i see nothing wrong if they want to gain advantage from it..dont all companies work for benefit? and this is also not completely true sony with samsumg , lg , philips and many many more companies has together developed the blu ray techonology..so in that case the benefit will go to all..

and yes about the mini disk...i own a mini disk player..and know atleast 10 other people who own it..and they are all people who are very very concious about sound quality, some of them are producers of music and they like to keep their music on that! it might not be selling like ipods are..but it all depends on the person..the sound quality of the MD player cannot be compared to any flash based player..and people who understand and care about that will never buy some silly ipod or some other mp3 player

I had seen a Nokia SD-MMC card reader just like this Kingston one but it didn't had inbuilt memory. The reader cost INR 400 3 months ago... It was really small and accepted SD & MMC cards... Also If you want faster speeds then you can buy SD Cards (100X -150X). They are cheap and pretty fast. I got a 1 GB, 150X mini-SD Card for $12 from US. It's Damn Fast!!!
