Kingston 8GB Datatraveler 110

Kingston 8GB Datatraveler 110

Does Kingston's 8GB drive flash drive live up to its name? We take a look.

Extremely fast read and write speeds for small files.

Very expensive, no bundled software.

With a slider to move the retractable connector, you're not going to be losing any caps with this drive. The build of this drive doesn't feel too solid, but it should withstand ordinary usage. Being over an inch long and about a centimeter thick, it will fit comfortably in your pocket and will be convenient to carry around in hand as well. That said, it isn't the smallest USB drive available in the market.

The Datatraveler is a translucent green USB drive with a small green LED on its front-side that lights up when busy. The device also comes in red, blue, and purple base colors with the option of being available in 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB capacities. The company doesn't provide a lanyard with it, however there is place provided to attach one of your own.

The drive isn't ReadyBoost compatible, though it is recognized by Vista.

Performance

Atto Benchmark

For block files of 64kb and larger, steady speeds of around 9 MBps are achieved, which is really good. On the other hand, an 18MBps Read speed is average.

Real World Tests

Tests were conducted by transferring 4GB of files to-and-fro.

Results

Sequential file write: 11 MBps
Sequential file read: 18.2MBps

Assorted files write: 5.3 MBps
Assorted files read: 16 MBps

When compared to other drives in the market (Silicon Power and the Kingston Datatraveler 100), the Kingston 110 can handle multiple files slightly better than it can handle single ones, which it handles in an average manner. Its Read and Write speed for several small files is above average. It takes about a minute and half to transfer a gigabyte of a single file, and 3 minutes 12 seconds if it's a mass of smaller files.

Conclusion

The drive is impressive with regards to performance when dealing with smaller files -- a typically troublesome area for such devices. However, with a street price of Rs. 3425 and a warranty of 5 years, it is clearly overpriced. Especially when you consider that it comes with no extras whatsoever. For comparison, the Silicon Power that was reviewed previously provides the same capacity for a third of the price. The Kingston 110 is a functional drive which just happens to be inexplicably expensive.

Note: After repeated inquiries we were assured that the price was Rs. 3425, however today we received a mail from them that the correct price is Rs. 1699. This is in line with competition and the performance of the drive, and seems like a reasonable price. Hence we add an extra half star to the rating (changed to 3.5 from 3).

What a bad product from the Kingston stables. So many companies have lost to Corsair. Has anyone seen the fit and finish of Corsair drives? It's fantastic and speeds are really good. This kingston product looks like an ugly copy of Sandisk Cruzer. And speeds as so poor. I feel sorry for the people who have less knowledge about USB drives who might buy this. I hope the readers are not one of those poor souls.

Haa Haa. I have a Jet flash JFV60 8 GB model, which is available in the market for around Rs. 1300. Some one has to be really rich and stupid to buy this drive. The Jet flas is Ready Boost ready as well.
