DDR's successor, DDR2, on the horizon, even higher performance can be expected on the computing platform.

Less power requirements and lower heat generation, faster, three years warranty

With newer technologies out every other day, performance limits scale newer heights in succession. Ranging from CPUs to GPUs to chipsets and memory storage devices, performance maximization is the ever-prevalent criteria for consumers. In recent times, the world has seen faster evolution of various CPUs to graphic engines and controller chipsets. Not to mention data storage devices too. With these high performance components feeding data to each other at high throughput levels, the primary intermediary - the system RAM - becomes a keystone in maintaining the delivery of such data at higher speeds.

The RAM has evolved from the humble EDO RAM to the faster SDRAM and finally DDR SDRAM. Each step involved pushing up the clock speeds of the chips or launching better data access methods in order to deliver higher performance without costing component life or higher power requirements. And exactly that is what DDR achieved. And its successor - DDR2 - on the horizon, even higher performance can be expected on the computing platform.

The latest DDR2 is expected to replace its older counterpart, the DDR SDRAM by next year. This translates into the fact that major technology companies are now switching to using DDR2 as mainstream memory product. The reason being, most system integrators including motherboard manufacturers, CPU giants such as Intel and AMD, etc are now developing chipsets and processors and other peripheral components specifically supporting the DDR2 standard. Considering the fact that most CPU platforms would now be adopting the DDR2, the shift occurs due to some of the obvious reasons.

Firstly, it is faster than the older DDR standard. It is slated to be released at speeds starting from 400 MHz, 533, MHz, 667 MHz and 800 MHz. That's sheer memory bandwidth available to the next generation CPUs and chipsets. Secondly it utilizes far lesser power and yet delivering better performance. Which in turn translates to the fact that it operates at lower frequencies while delivering consistently high performance. How is that possible? It is fairly simple. At least it looks like that. The DDR2 is able to process up to 4 bits at a time as opposed to 2 bits at a time by the older DDR SDRAM. Even though the data bit path are similar in both, DDR and DDR2 RAM - 64 bits wide, the DDR2 can process twice data than the DDR standard as it can fetch 4 bits at a time instead of 2 bits at a time. This means that it can move double the data than the earlier method could, in a given time period.

Moreover, it now features a smaller memory space addressing size as compared to the older DDR ram. That is, the older DDR ram featured a 2 KB page size and the newer DDR2 features a 1 KB page size. Simply put, this means the RAM would require lesser time accessing chunks of data internally. Because, the way it stores data internally is much smaller in size, accessing it requires smaller data paths. Add to the fact that it can transfer twice the data in a given clock cycle, thus making it faster than the previous DDR standard.

Another difference between the two being that DDR2 modules feature 240 pins instead of DDR's 184 and hence cannot fit in the same socket. Power requirements by the DDR2 RAM being less, operating at 1.8V instead of the 2.5 Volts DDR. This means, in the future you can expect much faster DDR2s operating at a bit higher voltages or efficient RAM utilizing much lesser power.

you have a 845 motherboard which have no sata ports inbuilt. so i suggest that you should purchase a USB to IDE and SATA convertor or a PCI to SATA card.

Dera Sir I have two HP530 Laptops. both using 1 G DDR667 Ram. yesterday i bought one 2G kingmax DDR667 Ram.put it in my laptop, the move my 1 G Ram to other latop. so one Laptop use one 2 G kingmax Ram. other laptop use two 1 G ram. after both performance climb up. but two 1 G ram that latop climb up more. Ram performance from 4.5 to 4.9, desktop performance for Aero from 2.3 to 3.3, game performance from 3.0 to 3.1. but using one 2 G Ram laptop performance only ram performance from 4.5 to 4.8, other performance did not change. Would you please explain to me what they are different. if i use two 1 G ram. will it get better performance for my laptop. thanks

Good Review, but as every one said, the availability is the problem. It would be more helpful if techtree include contact info of vendors too. Our market is fully flooded with fake RAMs and local vendors seldom know or care about the branded components... same is the case of Genuine software too... a pity!

In india most systems run on fake DDR RAM, because the market is dominated by assembler who depends on cheapest aka worst RAM. Reputable RAM companies just do not care to come to Indian market it seems, and volumes being low, prices are high. One can pick up DDR2 -533- 512 MB stick for $ 42.00 i.e Rs. 1871-00 in US, store rate.

thats true Vijay. even in Bomb-bay thats the case. you don't get good geniune RAM.

by Samir Gada, Bomb-bay, on Aug 21, 2005 01:00 AM, Report abuse

Basically it depends whether you know what hardware u are buying. So u can ask your vendor(assembler) to give the type of parts(Ram-400mhz).B'cos i have seen most of the people are ignorant and so they buy lower frequency rams and other parts.

939's dual channel memory controller with PC 3200 DDR1 delivers memory bandwidth upto 6 GB/s against the 4.8 GB/s DDR2 delivers at DDR 533 (133 MHZ). DDR starts getting faster at higher bandwidths, but those are yet to evolve into the mainstream. Future potential means that users will benefit not by buying DDR2 today, but in the future. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory/display/ddr2-ddr_3.html look at the table midway in the page, DDR2 will perform better at 600+ speeds IF they can get the latency to below 10 nS.

by Anonymous, Mumbai, on Aug 30, 2005 04:36 PM, Report abuse   Reply

4.8 Gb/s for DC DDR2 is quite laughable when you see that the 939 CPUs deliver over 5 GB/s at below DDR 400 speeds using DDR1. Check this link for what I mean: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=1475190&enterthread=y . DDR2 is better when it comes to overclocking, but at similar speeds the gain in bandwidth is marginal and the gain in applications negligibly small. Future potential is better, but that obviously does not apply to the DDR2 available today. AMD too may shift to DDR2 but only sometime next year, or they may go straight to GDDR3 as they have enough system power and bandwidth using the Dual channel controller to match and surpass competition. If you are planning to buy a new Intel system, DDR2 may be a better buy, specially if you plan on overclocking, but DDR1 with AGP may be cheaper without sacrificing any performance.

Where are the benchmarks using AMD processor platform? Seems to me that the comparisons should be made for the benefit of removing the one variable that still exists, "How will this ram respond / perform on an AMD platform?"
