Unlike other FPS games, including Insomniac's excellent Resistance 2, Killzone 2 takes some time getting used to. Each gun feels different in terms of weight, something Counter Strike players will relate to. The controls and the recoil control take some getting used to, but once they sink in, it's a smooth ride.
Between the shooters, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, the PS3 finally has a great balance. The guns in the game are very standard, with a few surprising additions. There is an excellent flamethrower, an explosive bolt gun and a rather unrealistic but effective lighting gun. To be honest, some of the "cool" weapons are useful but for a small period of time, eventually you go back to your tried and tested assault rifle.
There are a few boss fights, but none of them pose a serious threat, as you get some rather useful tips from your comrades. The last battle, with a certain Helghan, turns out to be as epic as boss battles can be. Trust me completing the last battle on 'Hard difficulty' is an accomplishment. Overall the gameplay is realistic and challenging, making it unique in today's casual gaming world.
The Multiplayer in Killzone 2 deserves a special mention. It's not a mere add-on; KZ2 delivers a great multiplayer package. The MP in KZ2 is class based with seven different classes. You start-off with one class and a few weapons only, over time you unlock all the other classes and weapons.
This slow and steady process makes the MP future proof. There are five different game modes including Assassination, Search and Destroy, Bodycount. These are different variants of age-old classics like Death match, Domination with a few new twists. A game mode called Warzone puts the player through all the game modes in a 40-45 min long session. The MP is truly deep with clan support and a good reward system.
Now let's talk about the visuals and presentation. As expected, this is the best-looking console game in the market today. The game looks brilliant and plays at a smooth frame-rate throughout. The animation and cut-scenes are superb with some of the best lighting. There are more than 100 death animations, which make killing the Helghan more fun every time. This is a game that deserves to be played in the right mood, with the proper equipment. Overall, this is one of the best FPS games ever made, and the best PS3 shooter. The visuals are breathtaking, the combat is challenging, the MP is rewarding. My only problem with the game has to be the missing co-op mode. It's cruel to create such excellent levels and not have co-op. This is the game for the PS3, something that everyone should try and all PS3 owners must buy.
4.5 stars outta 5, come on, this game had to be a 5. Also one more thing for Techtree, did you guys actually recieve a copy of the game to test, or got to play the REAL FULL game for say 4 hours, or were your reviews written out, based on just the demo. or was it an outside job. (plagiarism)
it's not that good, ... I have every shooter on every console that comes out and this game has NOTHING togive it it's own charm and personality, .... it's not fun.... and I am almost done with it...Resistance, Gears and COD all walk all over this game, ... the controls are terrible and the aiming is worse. 3 out of 5 stars
Killzone 2 is a perfect example of why SOny is in 3rd place this generation of consoles...it's graphics before game play, and it's a very average FPS with predictable levels and silly dialog.... the music is a lesson of what NOT to do with a gaming soundtrack, the faces other than the cut-scenes are lifeless and drab... C+
