Iron Man: Demo Preview (XBOX 360)

He fights crimes in a highly powerful Iron suit, and kicks enemies in places where the sun don't shine

I was looking forward to the game's graphics; the first thing I noticed was that the Iron Man is really detailed and shiny but the world around him is pretty dull, but I won't comment on the graphics until I have the full game in hand. The controls are simple; you hover with LT, fly with LB, shoot with RT, and so on. You can fly at great speeds to reach your targets, and shoot them with your primary weapon or use mini-grenades or missiles. There are quite a few options including melee attacking tanks. The hover option is also very helpful -- when it comes to reaching high areas as well as in combat. You will lock on to a target very easily and can also switch between targets pretty fast. The enemy units will fire continuously and rarely miss their target. You've to be careful to evade the attacks and counter-attacks. Your suit is well-equipped and can take massive amounts of damage. However, too much damage will shut down the suit systems temporarily -- but you will be back in action in an instant. Over time, the damage you suffer can be seen on the suit, which shows the developers' efforts in detail. Flying around is fun; the controls are smooth and offer great control over the character.

I found the demo level quite linear; it offered nothing out of the box. In all, you've about 100 enemies to kill in 9 minutes, which mean you have to kill about 11 enemy units every minute, which isn't too difficult once you learn the controls. Each of the 7 warehouses had automatic turrets and tanks; they all looked the same -- black, rusty, and in the middle of a desert. To my mind, however, the whole point of the demo is to show off the graphics and gameplay, both of which are satisfactory. We can see the game in its full glory only when the entire game is out, with missions and more areas to explore. The demo ends with a huge and heavily armed hovercraft entering the battle, whereupon comes the "Coming Soon" screen.

I was really impressed with the custom suit option. I believe adding new weapons and upgrades will keep the game more interesting. Moreover, the graphics are impressive. But since Iron Man looks good enough for a few hours of mindless destruction and mayhem, it won't rewrite the books of gaming.
