Intex R-15 DVD Player

Intex R-15 DVD Player

Ameya Dalvi, May 18, 2006 1730 hrs IST

The Intex R-15, a DVD player, is today's catch. Lets compare it to some of its competitors, featured by us.

Good picture and audio quality, Multiple Audio-out options, Full function remote, XviD/QPEL support, Karaoke support, Inexpensive.

DivX playback restricted to DivX 4.x format (Div3, DivX 5.0 and above not supported), No WMV support, Subtitles support only for DVDs, Long pause disables remote.

DivX is to DVD what MP3 is to Audio CD. Most of us are accustomed to this digital truth by now. The fundamental idea remains the same pack a lot more content in a given space with minimal loss in quality. The popularity of MP3 format has obligated every CD player manufacturer to incorporate support for MP3 playback in each of their models. A similar phenomenon is mounting in the realm of Video players.

However, there is one small catch. Unlike MP3, DivX is an open source format. Obviously, there are several popular variants of the same and implementing support for each of them is a bit more complicated than doing the same for MP3. But more significantly, a DVD player with even a limited DivX playback (or MPEG4 or MP4 as it is commonly known) offers a lot more versatility than a plain vanilla variant. The Intex R-15 is one such DVD player. Let's find out how it compares to some of its competitors that we have tested in the past year or so.

The Player

The Intex R-15 sports a sleek design and a smooth finish. Though not a replicate of the Videocon DVD77S4, I was reminded of that player in more than one ways, hinting a common OEM. The front panel sports 5 buttons including a power button along with a microphone socket with a volume control knob. The DVD tray is slim and reasonably sturdy but the media groove should have been a touch deeper. A small seamless LCD display and an IR receiver complete the list of front panel entities.

Why would anyone buy this player? The Philips DVP3046 which has been launched recently plays just about anything. Since the DVp3046 is DivX certified with Dolby Pro Logic II it is a much better option and with a price of Rs 3800/- in Mumbai you won't have to look elsewhere.

by Ajey K, Mumbai, on May 18, 2006 08:56 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Yeah, I have a Mitashi DIVX-999 and that plays all the DivX stuff that I throw at it... So why to go for a half-baked cookie?

by Grawp, The Dark Forest, on May 18, 2006 09:12 PM, Report abuse

I bought the Philips 5106K about 8 months back @ 4.8K. Till now it has not given problems with any of the Divx/Xvid files I have played. Madhu

by nsukla, mumbai, on May 19, 2006 06:09 PM, Report abuse

I got the DVP3046 yesterday from J P Electronics in Borivli. It is also available from Philips Arena at Worli. May be others offer it too. It has just been released and Philips have not listed on their website. It is DivX Certified

by Ajey K, Mumbai, on May 20, 2006 10:06 AM, Report abuse

oh cool! thanks a lot Ajey K for clarification on DVP 3046. U r quite correct it is not even of the philips web site.

Ajey, thanks a lot buddy. i found the model at one of the shops.small and cute and supports everything. Now just need to freeze on the speaker system.

by sachinrao, mumbai, on May 24, 2006 12:20 PM, Report abuse

Just found out the 3046 does not support DTS. So 5106 is still the best model in philips.anyways going for the hts 3500 model which costs around 13000.supports everything.

by sachinrao, mumbai, on May 25, 2006 11:56 AM, Report abuse

Hold on all you buddies!!! Coz a sales representative here at a mjorly happening store told me that philips is coming up with a brand new model to shut the competitors mouths!!!!! At least for a while. Its the big brother of 5106k. It will look better if not similar and the greatest thing being, with all the features available as its predecessor, it will also be able to play DVD-Audio and HDCD!!! nOw isnt that great? But im still thinking.......is it true? Philips website doesnt tell me anything abt it. Can some one plese try and get some news abt it? He sid it should be on the racks by the second half of this month.

Does the Philips DVD 625K support the DIV X format. I brought it couple of years back. It supports all the DVD,Cd and MP3 I have played in it so far. How does DIVX format differ from other DVD formats. Please confirm..
