This quarter Terabyte drive from Hitachi should appeal to a larger audience.

Excellent performance, Very quiet, Operates cooler, Low access time, NCQ, 5 years replacement warranty, Well priced.

High CPU utilization in HDTach.

We reviewed two half Terabyte drives recently, one by Hitachi and other by Seagate. But their pricing put them out of reach of many. Today we have another drive by Hitachi for review, but with a quarter Terabyte capacity and one that should appeal to a larger audience. Read on to know about its capacity and performance.

The Drive
The Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 is a 250 GB SATA 2 Hard Drive with a buffer size of 8 MB. The drive runs at a speed of 7200RPM and offers NCQ (Native Command Queuing) for faster data access and better power management.

It houses 3 platters of just over 80 GB each with 6 heads and follows the dimensions of a regular 3.5" hard drive. The formatted capacity when using the NTFS file system stands at 238 GB. This drive comes with a black and silver combination which is common to most of the drives. A part of its circuitry underneath is visible. This open circuitry underneath is with a purpose to aid heat decipitation at a much faster rate, keeping the drive relatively cooler for better performance and longevity. The connectors for the SATA data cable, SATA power supply and the regular Molex power follow the conventional layout and are present at the back of the drive. Besides which, this drive can also withstand an operating shock of 55 G and a non-operating shock of 350 G.

I do not find any reason to buy such big capacities. But performance wise this is irressistible. Is there any other hitachi drives with same performance but lower capacity like 80GB or 120 GB???

If you are in the practice of storing movies in your hard disk, you will run out of space even before you know it. Also, it when you are an IT pro and you want to use your comp like an all in one station. Game pod, Your development environment, your TV, Your Movie DB. Your song db, your digi snaps db.. think about it.. 250GB might be useful afterall ;)
