When it comes to desktop hard drives, we have been reviewing quite a few of the biggies with capacities as high as 400 GB. These hard drives do boast of huge capacities and superior performance, but they are certainly not going to be seen inside an average desktop PC. An 80 GB 7200 RPM hard drive is an ideal entry-level drive for the average home PC.

Currently, Samsung and Seagate dominate the 80 GB market and hence Hitachi, which is a relatively new entrant in the desktop hard drive market, will take a while to match them in terms of brand awareness and brand image. It will be very interesting to see how the Hitachi 80 GB Parallel ATA drive performs against the competition.

Features and Specifications
The Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 is an 80 GB single platter dual head drive spinning at 7200 RPM. Sporting an ATA 100 interface and a 2 MB buffer, the drive has a rated average seek time of 8.8 ms. With 350G of shock protection the specifications of the drive are very much on par with the other entry-level 80 GB parallel ATA drives in the market.

The dimensions are pretty much standard for a 3.5 inch desktop hard drive except for the fact that the drive design makes it appear slimmer than the regular 3.5 inch hard drives. In terms of build quality the drive is pretty sturdy just like the other Hitachi hard drives. The jumper settings are clearly mentioned right above the various connectors and the instructions are pretty much self-explanatory.

Tests Conducted
We used HD Tach to test the low-level performance, which would give us a clear-cut picture of the core ability of the drive. To test the file system and desktop performance we used SiSoftware Sandra's file system benchmarking module.

As far as real-time performance goes, we did some file read/write tests to arrive at real-time file transfer rates.

A great hard drive, using it for 6 months, even after 4 or 5 days of continous use, this drive managed not to show even the slightest of sluggishness. This hard drive is good for stable, reliable while performance is close to high end hard drives. The noise is atually a big issue, at day times you can't hear a thing, but at night or when the environment is pretty calm, the rattling noise from the hard disk working can be a bit annoying, this is good for home only and gaming use but not for library, school etc. This hard drive comes cheap, but that doesn't mean there is something wrong with it, instead its full of muscle and relentless performance

Won't the single platter be a drawback for this type of drives as acc to me, failure of this platter will result into failure of the complete harddrive?. I can't understand the concept of 350G shock protection.!! Does it mean that it will work even if i bang it on the ground?

1. WHAT IS THE PRICE COMPARISION WITH OTHER BRANDS ? 2. REPLACEMENT TIME PERIOD, IN CASE ANY PROBLEM COMES LIKE BAD SECTOR, HANGING ETC 3. WILL 40GB + THIS 80GB WILL WORK TOGETHER ON A NORMAL SMPS OR REQUIRES EXTRA POWER SUPPLY ?
