I have been referring to this one in a number of reviews for quite some time and now it's here for real. The highest capacity desktop hard drive has finally arrived in the local market. Primarily meant for power hungry high-end digital media applications, this 400 GB monster will also suite system administrators requiring a huge amount of space for server and database applications and backups. It doesn't mean that a power user or a gamer is not targeted here; this one is there for the taking as long as you got the dough to own it.

Hitachi is the first one to launch the 400 GB 3.5" desktop hard drives and they come in two variants, one with the traditional Parallel ATA interface and the other with the Serial ATA interface. The specifications for both the drives are the same except for the slightly faster transfer rate in the SATA model. We received the SATA variant from Hitachi and what follows is our experience with the highest capacity desktop hard drive.

Features and Specifications
Before we jump to the benchmarks, we better have a look at the specifications. Looks wise, this drive appears like any other normal desktop hard drive, as it uses the same 3.5" form factor and is built on the same lines. The 400 GB hard drive houses 5 platters and 10 heads. Measuring 1" x 4" x 5.7" (H x W x D) and weighing 680 g the drive spins at 7200 RPM and has a buffer size of 8 MB.

This is a novelty of little practical use. 3*160gb drives will cost far less and can be used in a raid array to deliver superior perf depending upon the application. And dont flame me saying that in ten years 1TB will b the norm.Muhahahahahaaa...

lol'z sid and brendon ... hv u ever thought of connectivity ??? and 1 major factor ... The Milestone !!! guys @ hitachi know tht the freakin hdd gets heated up alot ... and is an avg performer ... but then ... man ... ITS A FIRST FREAKIN 400 GB HDD !!! and i also agree tht 2 or 3 drives configured in raid would give a better performance !!!

Ashish Mulik | mumbai | 05/08/04 03:36 AM | Report abuse Reply

Yeah Sid I agree. Even two 200 GB SATA hard disks are abt 16000 and raiding them will give better performance at lower price
