Previously, we have shown you ways to detect and remove spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, and worms. Today we are going to look at a brilliant software that has shown its worth in the battle against the security threats of the PC world. This software is called HijackThis. Well, now its Trend Micro's HijackThis (that's right, they bought it). Trend Micro released a new BETA version of the famous software to show what they can add to it. Let us see if it's worth its salt.
About
HijackThis (sometimes abbreviated HJT), is a free spyware-removal tool for Windows originally created by Merijn Bellekom (www.merijn.org), a Dutch programmer and anti-spyware specialist. Merijn is well known for his software HijackThis, but has also developed other heard-of softwares such as CWShredder and KazaaBeGone. He currently has an MSc in Chemistry and is working on an MSc in Information Science at Utrecht University. Hence, he recently decided to sell HijackThis (as well as CWShredder) to reputed company Trend Micro. Now Trend Micro has complete authority over the software.
HijackThis is well known not because it's free, but because of its heuristic approach on detecting Malware. Rather than relying on a database of known spyware, it quickly scans a user's computer. It creates a list of differences from a known spyware-free environment and allows the user to decide what from the list needs to be removed. This not only helps you to find out if you do have spyware on your system, but also makes you realize what other software are occupying unnecessary space in your registry.
This software is generally useful for people whose web browser fails to function properly. If the homepage that you have assigned does not open when you start your web browser, it means a spyware has hijacked it. By running HijackThis and removing the unwanted registry entries, this problem is resolved.
However you must note that HijackThis does not determine what registry entry is good or bad. Do not make any changes to your computer settings unless you are an expert computer user. Hence, advanced users can use HijackThis to remove unwanted settings or files.
Yeah i wud. i'm sick and tired of windows. even got the Ubuntu distro, but then when i saw how un-user friendly it was, i decided i was better off with windows. each line of instructions for linux need u to be like an expert programmer, while in my vista ultimate, even the smallest of functions are managed automatically. it does give occasional problems, which are tough to resolve due to the lack of documentation and experience with the new OS, but then i guess its worth it.
