How To Use

In order to use this software, you need to first download it from this link.

There is no installation, just run the downloaded file. This should open the main window. You find 6 options to choose from. Just select the first option, which is - "Do a system scan and save a log file". In a flash it will scan your system and open a log file named "hijackthis" which is saved on your desktop by default. When a log is created before each line it adds one of the codes above so that an expert can know what type of line this is. Now don't go reading what is in the log file, because trust me, you aren't going to understand much. Just keep an additional copy of the log file in a different folder. However if you are still curious to know what the codes mean, there is an image which lists the codes with an explanation of each.

Now since Trend Micro's take over of the software, they haven't yet provided any technical support for HijackThis. Prior to this, when Merijn ran HijackThis, there was a support webpage called www.hijackthis.de. One could just copy the log and paste in the space provided in the webpage and get detailed information about each entry in the log.

This detailed information tells you if the HijackThis database can identify the entry and if it can, it shows how reliable is the entry is with icons named 'Safe', 'Very Safe', etc. Once you've gathered information on all of the entries, what you will need to do is differentiate between the wanted and the unwanted entries. Any entry which has nothing to do with any software that you have installed and is also marked as a doubtful entry by the support page can be deleted.

Take for example, suppose there is an entry such as O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [Tok-Cirrhatus] (User 'SYSTEM') that's there in the log. Now I know for a fact that Tok-Cirrhatus is a very deadly security threat. But obviously not everyone will have any idea about the same. For this, HijackThis support page identifies such entries as unknown or dangerous. However, there are some entries which will show up as unknown but could be software that you have installed on your own. If you do delete that entry, it is most likely that the software associated with that entry will cease to function. Hence, one has to be very careful.

Yeah i wud. i'm sick and tired of windows. even got the Ubuntu distro, but then when i saw how un-user friendly it was, i decided i was better off with windows. each line of instructions for linux need u to be like an expert programmer, while in my vista ultimate, even the smallest of functions are managed automatically. it does give occasional problems, which are tough to resolve due to the lack of documentation and experience with the new OS, but then i guess its worth it.
