Handspring Treo 90
The Treo 90 is another example of how Handspring chose to do something different and started a whole new trend in the PDA industry.
Handspring was one of the first few manufacturers other than Palm itself who wanted to license Palm OS to build handhelds. Many questioned this philosophy. The question was simple, what will be the difference between a PDA by Palm and a PDA by Handspring if both run the same OS? Why would people buy a Handspring if they can buy a Palm itself for the same price?
The answer lay in innovation and customization, which had eluded Palm or any of its initial partners until Handspring came along. They were the first to think up and develop a way to add extras like an MP3 player or a digital camera, even a phone to a PDA via their springboard modules. When it came to software, they chose to include custom third party tools like DateBook+ and many small yet significant additions to some basic tools like Calculator etc. to differentiate themselves from Palm.
The Treo 90 is another example of how Handspring chose to do something different and started a whole new trend in the PDA industry. The Treo series was meant to be a replacement to Handspring's outgoing Classic PDAs. They are faster, have more storage, and come with true 'keyboards', a great addition to the Palm platform for those who wouldn't want to go through the torture of learning Graffiti, Palm's handwriting-based text input technology.
This product, the Treo 90, is the 'PDA', whereas the rest of the products in the Treo series are 'Communicators', i.e. Smart Phones. It features a 160 x 160 pixel 12-bit colour display, a 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ Processor, and 16 MB of memory, which can be upgraded to 80 MB by adding a 64 MB Secure Digital/MMC memory card.
Though the thought of 16 MB of memory and a 33 MHz processor might remind some of 386es and Windows 3.1, you will be right when you think that. This baby is almost as powerful as a 386, and the OS is almost as good as Windows 3.1, but then, it fits in your pocket and runs a whole week in a single charge of its Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.
The universal power adaptor is quite nifty, you can choose to plug it into the PDA itself, or plug it into the HotSync cable and the cable into the PDA, and recharge it while you sync it etc. This combines the convenience of a docking cradle in a simple cable.
The Palm world surely isn't the fastest of the PDA platforms available today, but it surely is the most efficient. Imagine this, I've installed a word processor with a dictionary and thesaurus, I've installed four games including Tetris, Pacman, a port of Super Mario and an amazing Billiards game, and then a few more utilities like a multi-alarm clock, a sketch program etc. Guess how much memory I consumed? 3.4 MB.
The best part is, all Palm OS apps are always running, even when you switch your PDA to standby mode, or play a game. Apps never take more memory than their own size and the size of data they're using. All this can be attributed to the Palm OS architecture. No cache, no problems.
The Treo 90 is infinitely more usable than any handheld without a keyboard. On-screen keyboards or handwriting recognition can't even dare pass the hardest test for them all, typing a 1000 word article in a packed Mumbai local train. With the Treo 90's mini QWERTY style keyboard, you can easily thumb your way to 15 to 25 words per minute even in such extreme circumstances (and fat fingers).

This handheld is a native USB device, which means it offers significantly faster transfer rates than PDAs with a pseudo-USB interface that just acts like a USB-Serial converter. I was able to sync a 1.8 MB application and all the other data in under 10 seconds flat, making it one of the fastest HotSyncers out there. It's a perfect 'PDA' for those who want a PDA, and not an MP3 player. This PDA, unlike the Windows Pocket PC-based PDAs, doesn't have "wave out" sound support. The only sounds it is capable of generating are alarm and simple game sounds like your PC's built-in speaker.
Other than all the cool apps that come with Palm OS 4.1H, the Treo 90 bundle includes Blazer Web browser, One-Touch Mail (POP3 client), SMS messaging through an IR capable GSM phone or a Serial Cable, and WordSmith. WordSmith is one of the best Palm OS word processors, and integrates very well with Microsoft Word.
Selling in the US Market for US $299 (depends, you can find it cheaper, US $200-260 in some online stores), and in India for around Rs. 20,000, this is one of the lowest-priced colour handhelds with a keyboard in the market. A good deal for those looking for a true organizer with great text capabilities, and a whole lot on the side to have fun with.
