HP Photosmart C4388 All-in-One

This MFD (or All-in-One) is packed to the brim with features. It's priced well. Now, what about performance?

Good text prints, fast speeds, Wi-Fi 802.11g, memory card reader, good price.

Grainy photo prints, no ADF.

The MFD
The C4388 has a light-grey and white plastic body with a glossy finish; it looks rather elegant. The flaps seem sturdy.

The transparent, folding tray swings open and extends forward

There's a folding, clear flexible plastic tray that swings out to hold the printed sheets that the device spits out. Input tray capacity is 100 sheets -- good for both SoHo and home. The problem here is that the input and output trays are the same, that is, there's no real separation between the input and output paper. When a print is produced, it emerges and lies on top of the stack of input paper (farther away from the unit, though). But this also means there's always the chance of printed sheets getting back into the printer once the input stack is expended (if the print jobs aren't all done.)

The cartridge bay

The printer uses two cartridges, black and tri-colour, but you also have the option of using a 6-ink cartridge, which HP claims considerably improves image quality. The cartridges are easily accessible on the right-hand side when you open the door of the cartridge bay. The scanner is of the flatbed type, and can scan sheets of size as large as A4.

The printer resolution is 4800 x 1200 optimised dpi, which should, technically, result in good photo prints. The scanner resolution is 1200 x 2400 hardware dpi, which, again, is good.

There is a multitude of memory card reading slots, and the Wi-Fi indicator and button is below

On the left-hand side at the front, there are slots that accept MMC/SD, MS/DUO, XD, and CF memory cards. Just below the memory card slots is the Wi-Fi indicator. Yes, this MFD is Wi-Fi-capable, meaning it has an IEEE 801.11g interface and operates with any 802.11-compliant device. You therefore have the freedom to fire prints from almost any Wi-Fi device (such as your laptop or PDA), no wires attached! The Wi-Fi indicator glows blue when the radio is on, and there's a small button beside it to turn it off when it's not needed.

Very good Mfd at such a price...colour reproduction is very good and the photo prints are closest to professional lab prints...scanner also performes good for home or home office users.

I own one of these. But though it is mentioned that there is on site warranty, when i had a problem they told me it does not have an on site. and that i will have to carry it to the service centre.i did argue that its mentioned that it has on site warranty but the lady at call centre told me that I am mistaken.

I have bought an Epson All-in-One recently and the photo quality of these printers are excellent. It is as good as lab quality photos. Unlike HP or other brands, interesting feature in All epson All-in-Ones and printers is that it comes with separate ink cartridge for each colour. With other brands you need to change the entire colour cartridge (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) when just one colour like yellow is empty. With epson you just need to change the yellow cartridge and not the entire colour cartridge set. Oops! thats a lot of saving to buy another Epson All-in-one for my sister.

HP also has such type of printers in the market which have 6 ink tanks (Photosmart 3200). These are all better printers than any of their counterparts..
