Unsatisfactory results for a 4800 dpi printer, Low print run per cartridge
Border Test: This document contained lines stretching out all the way to the edge of the document, to test the printer's borderless printing capabilities.
Result: The printer does not support borderless printing. It left a 0.5 cm gap from the top, left and right edges, as well as a 1.5 cm gap from the bottom edge.
500 dpi Image Test: We printed a 500 dpi image with minute details and varying colors.
Result: Since this printer uses the same cartridges as the HP 3550, the color output was just as dull. The higher resolution of the 3650 didn't really help make details any clearer; the only difference was that this result was less grainy than the 3550.
Time Taken: 9 minutes 19 seconds
600 dpi Image Test: Same as the 500 dpi test, only done with a higher resolution (600 dpi) image.
Result: Once again we noticed dull colors, with not too clear details. The overall print quality was however better than the 500 dpi test.
Time Taken: 10 minutes 44 seconds
Speed Test: Here we printed 20 identical documents at normal quality and then calculated the printer's speed in documents per minute.
Result: The printer was capable of printing 6.3 pages per minute, which shows that it's a great choice for fast textual printing.
Print Run: Normal quality prints were taken of a document containing some amount of text and a multi-color image to test the cartridge life of a printer.
Result: A total of 161 pages in one cartridge lifespan, similar to the 3550's print run, which uses the same cartridges.
The printer is pretty decent for fast textual printing, but any heavy color print out will take its toll on the printer's speed. And it's not like the output quality compensates for the time lost, the bluish tinge that's noticeable on all color printouts makes even the happiest vacation picture look depressing.
All these problems combined with the low print run per cartridge make it clear that the HP 3650 is quite a disappointment not only as a 4800 dpi printer, but also for its value for money. Did I mention how the printer had a nasty habit of accepting 2-3 sheets of paper at once, causing printing errors? Well it did!
Conclusion
With its street price of Rs. 3,500, I really can't recommend this printer to anyone especially considering that HP itself has another printer - the DeskJet 3550, which gives near identical results and comes for Rs. 2,950. Since the DeskJet 3650 uses the same cartridges as the 3550, the black cartridge will cost you Rs. 770 and the color cartridge will cost Rs. 1,205.

Ohhh..HP Deskjet F380? horrible, unstable, We bought it 2 months ago and it works fine, but now the function is almost totally absurd, very slow specially in scanning it took 10 minutes per page, so there must be a big problem in hardware as well, please help me if you have a solution to this prob.

When it jams, I cannot cancel the current, spooled document, even though I right click "cancel." Have to disconnect and re-install. Definitely a major nuisance.

I am looking into the same problem, it seems that if you are not in the local admin group on a PC even when black text is printed its made up from the colour cart. I have removed the colour cart from the printer and i get a blank page. The same document is fine when you print it from an admin account.

The Print quality on 3650 was certainly good. I have this printer and when you are done installing the printer with the bundled software, which was a breeze installing on my system, you need to calibrate the newly installed cartidges. Here the adjustments are done as per the test print results. The Page alignment tests help out in getting a sharper print. I even took high resolution prints off this printer and found them to be really good. Though it guzzles more ink a satifying print out covers up for that. The sofware has maintenance helpout features like cleaning of cartridges and priming when the ink levels go very low and all this can be done at the click of a mouse button! The paper if ever gets jammed just cancel the print and unplug and plugin the cord and it ejects the paper out without any hassles. What else it supports 5-color cartidge R58 as well if you want more depth in your photo prints. It is indeed a good printer at entry level for these kind of features. It is also very much space saving.Believe me If you handle this printer the way the instructions go with the printer assistant software provided to you, you will be glad you didn't make a wrong decision :-)

From Canada: For the price, it seemed OK for regular 8.5x11 simple printing. But I have tried to print CD/DVD labels, and a large percentage of them do not load properly, resulting in the printout offset, at the top of the page, instead of the detachable 'circle' which is to be applied to the the burnt DVD. This happens with both glossy and matte labels. Clearly there is a problem with non-standard paper being loaded into the print mechanism. And yes the cartridges cast almost as much as the damn printer. But aren't ALL inkjet printers a ripoff in this manner these days?

I by passed this printer having got bad reports about it and settled for 3845 that uses the same cartridge prints faster - 18 -14 black\colour in fast draft mode - this was faster than the 3550 that I had earlier I would like a review of 3845

Please check for the print settings of your printer. Check if it has been set at "Best" or "Maximum" dpi. Settings anywhere from "Best" to "Maximum" dpi can cause longer time to print. Keep it in "Fast draft" to "Normal" mode for faster prints. Use "Maximum" dpi mode only during photo prints.

Hi again, A few more things need to be shared for the sake of the "newbies". First, I do not recommend buying those "universal" refill kits. Ink formulations and viscosities are suppose to be different from printer to printer..although I did start out with a universal...and had no probs. The main reason is cost...these kits are a major ripoff. Find a good supplier and buy ink in bulk as I do. I buy from atlanticinkjet.com and my next buy will be a litre of black ink..no doubts about it. I'm sure you can find a reasonable supplier in what ever part of the world you are in. The downsides? Well...if this printer is as smart as I think it might be...HP already knows now..and I may not get a Christmas card from Florina this year <giggle>. A few more pointers for the newbies. Never overfill...I normally run them dry..but have a routine now that seems to work..which is only something you learn from experience...to know when it really needs refilled...or it's good for another 100 pages or so. Refilling the color carts is a lot of trouble...but I don't use a lot of color ink anyways..so I have little experience with it. It can be done..but...as with any refill...have a area that is easy to clean...I don't do it over a sink..but..I have a container that would catch any spilled ink or leaks if it ever happened. Refill the carts slowly...do it too fast and you are asking for a mess. As for the money..I have saved at least $300.00 so far...in the last three months I've been refilling. I have overhauled the Lexmark one time so far..and replaced parts no problems. Being an engineer, I have not decided to..umm.."overhaul" the 3650 yet..but...:)

Hi, It is not recommended to use refilled cartridges. For little bit saving of money you are going to compramize on the following things: 1. Quality printout 2. Product - The product can have carraige jam, ink leakage etc.

i disagree with ashish. i live in the middle east and have found that non-original cartridges are almost as good. they come from manufacturers in korea and taiwan, who specialize in this. secondly, the saving is not "little bit" but nearly 50% of the price of the printer. i am not sure about the non-original cartridges available in india. but as a concept, a good ink manufacturer's ink replacement should be okay. Imagine if Parker insisted that everyone should only use their ink on their pens. HP, Canon, Epson etc should cut cartridge prices by 70% or else lose out in cartridge sales. jkrishnanb@yahoo.com

I totally disagree with you. The word "manufacturer" will not come in existence as it is refilling. Customer takes this empty cartidge and take a new one which is filled from the vendor. However, the vendor fills it at his end. There is no garantee for the quality of the ink. A ink refiller stays near to my place who do a refill for deskjet for just Rs 500. Hi! I have a 3650...and have a few things/thoughts to add to this. First, it should be said that refilling is not without risks...but...I've been doing this for a long time....and with my volume of printing...it is not an option. It is a necessity. You must understand there are two types of printers...smart and dumb. My workhorse Lexmark 1100 is a dumb printer...it is not "aware" that a cartridge has been refilled...and could care less. The 3650 is a smart printer and does care if or if not a cartridge has been refilled. It has already made a liar of me, though. :) When I bought this printer, I knew that it was "smart" and didn't care. I had to see if the carts could be refilled, tho. Clearly refilling carts has cut into the printer manufacturer's wallet...and they have responded. HP's response seems to a gentle one. I use more black ink than color..so that was the first refill project for the 3650. Figuring there would be trouble, I decided to wait til the cart was 50% full and top it off. No problems...at least until yesterday. In hindsight, perhaps it really was a Windows error after all..because now...16 hours later..it works fine. Having no experience with this printer, I just don't know yet. One thing is clear...something did happen yesterday...the 3650 would print 1/2 page and stop. The printer knows the cartridge has been refilled..and still works anyways. It just printed a 28 page pdf..no probs. The reason I know it knows..there is a applet you can use...and it says the black cart is empty, of course. Another odd thing...I just tried to check ink levels...and, for the first time, XP reported it could not establish com. Odd. Anyways...I'll followup next week...for another installment of.."User vs smart printer..round two".

I thoroughly agree with all of the criticisms in your rewiew. However it also has a very nasty habit when it runs out of paper during a print run. When this happens it refuses to print again until I unplug the power cord and select the "Print" again from the File menu of the application, it will NOT restart the job again from the printers own menu. I am also very disappointed in the colour print quality. I had an HP 6122 which I was pleased with until it suddenly decided it wanted to chew up the paper instead of printing it.
