A few years back the only popular form of memory was the single data rate (SDR) SDRAM. The speed of the system memory then was not as big a concern as today. The quantity mattered more. But CPU speeds kept growing at a phenomenal pace and the RAM fast started becoming a bottleneck. The maximum speed that a SDR SDRAM could offer was 133 MHz as compared to CPU FSB of 266 MHz to 400 MHz. So Intel decided to switch to a newer and faster memory type developed by Rambus called RDRAM.

RDRAM was undoubtedly quicker than the standard SDRAM but was a lot more expensive and the same was the case with motherboards that supported that memory. Soon afterwards, the Double Data Rate SDRAM was released, which is commonly known as DDR RAM. The DDR RAM and the compatible motherboards were a lot cheaper than their RDRAM counterparts. Intel's arch rival AMD chose to go the DDR way and with better chipset architecture, the performance of the DDR boards just kept on getting better and Intel couldn't ignore it any more. They too jumped on the DDR bandwagon and released the 845D/E/G/P series of motherboards along with their 850 series, which supported RDRAM.

Just when several companies were looking for a way to develop faster memory and implement a support for the same on their motherboards, nVidia traversed a lateral path and produced a masterstroke called the nForce. It came out with a concept of Dual Channel Memory interface, which theoretically doubled the memory bandwidth. In other words, it was equivalent to using a double speed DDR memory. This technology was further refined in the nForce2 and nForce2 Ultra boards, which were capable of supporting dual channel DDR 400. That marked the end of the reign of RDRAM as the performance leader.

After Intel parted ways with Rambus, they desperately started looking for a Dual channel solution for their Pentium 4 CPUs to counter AMD solutions. They came up with the E7205 chipset, which was a decent attempt, but not good enough to beat their aging 850E based-RDRAM boards. Though the 850E boards were better in performance, they lacked some recent features like support for 800 MHz FSB and AGP 8X. After some serious R&D, Intel came up with two brilliant chipsets, the 865 and 875. Today, let's have a closer look at a motherboard from a reputed manufacturer based on a variant of the 865 chipset. Whether the 865 can compete with the 850E, we will soon figure out.

The package
The Gigabyte GA-8IG1000MK motherboard is based on the Intel 865G chipset (the G in 865G stands for onboard graphics). It sports a micro ATX form factor and supports all Socket 478 Intel CPUs with FSB (Front Side Bus) of 400, 533 and 800 MHz and also extends full support for Intel's Hyper-Threading technology. There are two pairs of DIMM sockets present on the board that can take up to 4 GB of 266, 333 or 400 MHz DDR RAM. The board also supports dual channel memory interface. The memory slots are color coded to simplify the use of the dual channel interface. The instructions for doing the same are present in the supplied instructions manual. Three PCI slots and one AGP 8X slot are also present along with one Floppy, two IDE and two Serial ATA (SATA) connectors.

The back panel is graced with the usual PS/2 ports, a COM port, a Parallel port, a VGA-Out, a RJ-45 LAN socket and two pairs of USB 2.0 ports. There is a provision for another two pairs of USB ports on the motherboard, which can be used with the help of a cable (cable not provided in the package). Also present are the connectors for Line Out, Line In and Mic, which double up as Front, Rear and Center channel outputs, respectively, if you choose to use the 5.1 channel audio capabilities of the onboard Realtek ALC-655 audio chip.

The package comprises of an ATA-100 cable, a pair of SATA cables, a Floppy cable, a custom back plate, an instructions manual and a CD comprising of the necessary drivers, Norton Internet Security 2003 suite and Gigabyte's @Bios and Easy Tune 4 utilities for updating the BIOS and over-clocking, respectively.

Sir, please advize what additional VIDEO CARD I can use to uprade this to 32MB or more? I understand this is "onboard Graphics" - shared video memory. It does not seem to be enough to see certain downloaded videos. Thank you, Jonathan

using the Intel 865GBF board for abt 5 months.. the disappointhing thing about 865GBF is that it doesn't have the on board LAN.. they have not incorporated it in 865gbf.. in fact there are three versions of gbf.. 1) intel 865gbf - basic .. no lan 2) intel 865gbfe - 10/100 Mbps LAN on board 3) intel 865gbfg - 10/100/100 Mbps LAN (gigabit ethernet).. so if you are under the impression that Intel865GBF have on board LAN.. be aware before you.. anyway.. the board is rock stable.. and a good buy.. I ended up buying an Adcom 10/100 LAN card.. for my broadband.. 2

Hello sir, I have a original Intel 850GB motherboard with 1.5 Ghz processor bought in October 2001. This motherboard uses RD RAM and I want to up-grade the memory. Right now I have 64 x 4 (total 256) but I want to upgrade to 1 GB. The problem is that it seems that RDRAM is not only not available(I have tried in Nehru Place), but also very very expensive. And it appears that all four slots have to be used in this motherboard and all have to have the same MB memory. Please help me out of this and tell me how to go about upgading. thanks, Umesh

buy two modules of 512 or 4 modules of 256 MB RDRAM . The cost can be 12000/-Too expansive ? No point going in for upgradation.Better buy a mother board a processor and iGB of RAM that will cost less.

The Intel 865GBF outperformed this board on all tests!!! Check out the review from Digit mag i think feb issue 2004. The only difference is onboard lan? or not.. big deal its only rs 450 more if u go and buy it seperately.... go for a better performing motherboard.

i have one stick of kingston 256 mb ddr 400 ram on an intel 865 GBF board. i now want to buy one more of the same type and run in dual channel mode. which slot should the second stick go into pls ?

go into slot 0 in the second channel, assuming of course he first stick of 256MB went into also slot 0 of first channel. Do you know that your computer will run faster with two sticks of memory (258 MB each) rather than a single stick of 512 MB in a single chanel?

i have 2 ddr 400 256 mb ram in my intel 865 gbf mother board. but the bios shows system memory speed of 333 mhz. please let me know why the system memory speed is not same as that of the bus speed of ddr 400.

How can it support 4 GB DDR, since there are 2 slots each for DDR & SDRAM. Please suggest

1GB each bank, they're all DDR, and there are 4 of'em.

Well that seems like a really good deal... but could you please tell me what resolution sizes & refresh rates the onboard graphics can display ?

1)how much DDR RAM with 333 speed will support for Intel 865 GBF mother board ? 2) Is this mother board will support different speed DDR RAM's? Ex. one DDR RAM 256 speed 266 + one DDR RAM 512 with speed 333.

While this board may seem a good buy, you can get an Intel original 865 GBF for the same price. The intel board is the full factor ATX board and it seems a better option. The only major plus point for this board may be the 3 years warranty. But then again boards from manufacturers such as Intel and gigabyte usually give problems much later than their warranty periods.

Can we attatch both SDRAM & DDR together? Can the 4 slots accomodate 4 DDR (400 MHZ) of 1 GB each ? Please suggest how to attatch 4 GB RAM.

DDR *is* SDRAM, just Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM versus Single Data Rate SDRAM.
