Genius Traveler 350 TrackBall Mouse

I'd rather use my laptop's touch-pad than fiddle with this weird contraption

Can be used by both right and left handed people, two configurable buttons

Not very comfortable to use, learning curve for regular mouse users, inaccurate track-ball sensor, expensive

Design and Features

A first look gives you the feeling that you are looking at an alien hovercraft. Because of this design, it can be conveniently used by both left- and right-handed people. To complement this, it's got two sets of right- and left-handed buttons, and a track-ball in the center for navigation.

Next to the track-ball is the scroll-wheel. Two shortcut buttons also lie above and below it

One of the shortcut buttons is to instantly activate the Flip 3D option in Windows Vista. It tabbed windows in XP, too. The button below that is for starting the Windows Media Center. Both these buttons can be put to any other use, using the provided software.

While a conventional mouse lets your whole hand rest on it, your hand is pretty much suspending in the air; in the case of this new mouse, your fingers are over the buttons.

The USB cable is retractable. It folds the wire neatly into a circle when not required. However, the cable isn't long enough to reach that USB port behind your cabinet. But then again, this one's meant to be used with notebooks. Provided in the package is an adjustable jig which has a suction mechanism. Thus, it can be attached to a laptop and have the mouse sticking out at the other end. This could prove convenient at times when the user doesn't have adequate desk space as when in a car or train.

The adjustable jig refused to stick to the surface of my laptop. I had a hard time making it stick on another model. But it finally did stick. Now that I had to navigate the pointer with my thumb in this position, using such a setup wasn't very comfortable.

I would rate the overall ergonomics as just average. I wasn't very happy using the mouse and longed to switch back to my regular one after some time. I also sensed my fingers hurting a bit after prolonged use. Also, regular mouse users -- or people who've never used a track-ball -- will find it difficult at first to maneuver the pointer with this. But it gets fairly usable after that.
