Genius GHP-05 Live

Genius GHP-05 Live

"True 3D surround" seems to be what they claim -- but there's precious little in that direction

Design, comfort, Good Extension Cable.

Battery powered, imbalance between the left and right driver

Performance

The Genius GHP-05 Live has the looks and feel of a professional pair of headphones. The headphones don't sport a volume control; considering that a volume control could induce distortion, this is a good thing.

In terms of sound quality -- well, these cans are, overall, just decent. Even the average person who demands some quality from a pair of headphones would be disappointed, leave alone audiophiles. The output is distorted even at relatively low volumes; of course, this depends on the source, but we mean the sound gets distorted even before you'd expect it to. The power of the drivers seems too low for the kind of input sources they are supposed to handle, like DVD players and hi-fi systems.

Initial increments of the system volume (on our setup) saw the left driver carrying more of the sound; at about 50% volume, the sound was evenly spread. Going higher, the volume shifted to the right driver, again creating an imbalance. So we were left with only a band of 40 to 60% (in terms of volume). The other problem I noticed with the headphones was the real bass and the high treble output is more concentrated at the left driver rather. At higher volumes, the high treble was piercing, and it probably seemed more so because at around that volume, the bass went flat. (I was using a Creative Audigy Platinum sound card for this test.)

There is no Normal Mode (without DRD-True3D sound), so it's difficult to tell what kind of enhancement the DRD - True3D Sound provides. (I didn't notice a distinctive surround effect.) My overall verdict? Unsatisfactory.

Conclusion

The Genius GHP-05 Live retails for Rs 1,900, and comes with a one-year warranty. Thus far, the headphones we've seen from Genius have managed to reach the "decent buy" level, but they haven't been good enough for us to recommend wholeheartedly. The Genius GHP-05 Live doesn't get our recommendation -- it wouldn't even if it were to have been priced lower.
