Gaming Mice Round Up

Gaming Mice Round Up

Punit Lodaya, Aug 18, 2006 1200 hrs IST

What type of mouse actually qualifies as a gaming mouse? All this and direct comparision in today's article.

Next Page

They have been around for quite some time and I got a chance to test them all. The first gaming mouse I was able to get my hands on was the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0. I did use some mice before, but none of them were actually qualified as a gaming mouse.

What type of mice actually qualifies as a gaming mouse? Well, there are certain standards that gamers try to find in a mouse. If those features are present, then it automatically qualifies as a gaming mouse, regardless of the manufacturer's claim. Those features are:

1] Ability to track at fastest speed i.e. should not skip while moving the mouse from side to side.

2] Ergonomics. Gamers tend to use the mouse for long hours without breaks. Hence, ergonomics are very important for a mouse.

3] Extra features. While this is not compulsory, features make the mouse a much more valuable buy e.g. DPI Selector, weights, tilt wheel, etc.

The LASER sensor is now poised to soon overtake the optical sensor technology as it can give much more precise tracking, ability to use for multiple purpose, and non-emission of red light. Most gaming mice tend to use the latest technology; hence, most of the mice will be LASER sensor based gaming mice.

Here is the list of today's competitors:

1] Logitech G1 Gaming Mouse
2] Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse
3] Logitech MX518 Gaming Mouse
4] Genius Ergo 520 Gaming Mouse
5] Genius Ergo 525 Gaming Mouse
6] Microsoft Laser 6000 Gaming Mouse
7] Microsoft Comfort 3000 Optical Mouse
8] Razer Copperhead Gaming Mouse
9] Razer Diamondback Gaming Mouse

From the 9 contenders, 5 of them are optical mice i.e. Logitech G1, MX 518, Genius Ergo 520, Microsoft Comfort 3000, and Razer Diamondback.

Let the match begin....Ohh!! I forgot the benchmarks. Well, I used them on DKT Pad, which is a cloth based pad. I generally don't prefer to use hard plastic or metal surface as they tend to be very smooth. That's entirely my perspective and does not reflect anything what-so-ever about the usage of hard surface material.

read the razer diamondback page...its been lifted straight out of some other site because it begins with a direct comparison to the razer boomslang...which doesnt even feature in the article!!...i am appalled at the quality of TT...and it just doesnt seem as if the other mice have been reviewed either....it would be nice to have some input from TT on this...

by Tarun, New Delhi, on Aug 18, 2006 05:47 PM, Report abuse

Angad, even the diamondback page is taken from Techtree's own archive. Chk the mouse archives if you don't believe me and u will find it there. I hv been visiting Techtree for 2 years and I have never seen them flick anything from anywhere. As for Tarun, its time to shove ur foot up ur hole and eat ur own shiz.

I DONT BELIEVE LODAYA, i dont believe that he actually tested these mice, even if he did why wouldnt he posted actual pics rather than taking the pics from the sites. second, this is the shittiest copied compilation of reviews from diff sites. All the Fame TT has made, is drained in the shizzpot.. WTF? were u thinking when u posted this !!

by Hazard, CS, on Aug 18, 2006 02:41 PM, Report abuse   Reply

TT did review all the mice mentioned above individually which are even more detailed i.e. 3 page per review. Over here every review is just one page.

Err Mr. Lodaya, i have a question.... I have a razer Diamondback, and as far as i know, there in no dpi adjustment feature on the mouse. There are, ofcourse, two dpi settings provided in the drivers, but those are only 1600 dpi and 400 dpi. The mouse features an on the fly senstitivity adjustment, not a dpi (or cpi) adjustment. The sensitivity adjuster can be used from a scale of 1 to 10 and is a good feature. Now, my question is, can you please verify how you got 4 dpi settings? If they do exist, i want to know how to use them, and if they dont, then could you please change that part in your review? There is not much point in misleading people.

I agree with you hazard, I've had this Diamondback for 1 month now and i am certain that it has no on the fly dpi adjuster... Only a sensitivity adjustment, which needs drivers. The MX518 and G5 have hardware based, dirverless dpi adjustment. On another note, Mr. Lodaya, why do you say that cpi and not dpi is the correct unit for measurement of mouse resolution even though Razer themselves advertise the mouse as a 1600dpi mouse? ANd then why do you give up on the whole cpi thing midway and use dpi for the second half of the article? I mean stop talking nonsense. If you want to lift bits of articles, atleast ensure that there is a uniformity.

Thanks for correcting the mistake. I myself was aware that it supported sensitivity on fly and not DPI. There were certain goof ups by CMS and the content team both. This article was suppose to go LIVE on friday evening. Due to the error, the newsletter and the RSS feeds published this incomplete article one day before. The purpose of Techtree is get the right choice and certainly not misleading them. I would request you to go through the article once more, as the LIVE version had corrected all the previous mistakes and even includes price comparision at the last of the page. Once again, the article you read was not suppose to get published as it was still in the phase of getting copy edited. Sorry for the inconvenience.

hey nxt time b4 u badmouth a reviewer, just chk the effort that he has put in it....if u knw sumthing that the reviewer doesnt just mention it as extra info instead of a cynical pretext on the reviewer.....this article has all the info needed and if u think u can do better mr Tarun....just go to user reviews and do a review and we will see how good u r......

by Romeo, India, on Aug 19, 2006 11:41 AM, Report abuse

All the retards who are barking off to glory here about the originality of the article should get their facts right. All the mice in the comparison above have been individually reviewed by Techtree over the past year. So there is nothing wrong at all if they compile their 'own' data into one article. But it seems people are just looking for a chance to exhibit their stupidity and even those who cant type correct English. But yes, Mr Lodaya could have compiled the entire data in a much better manner had he put in some efforts.

Anybody know which of these drivers support Enhanced Scroll Mode (present in Samsung mouses). I want to upgrade to Razer Copperhead or G5 but I want to make sure I get that Enhanced Scroll Mode. For those wondering what it does, it allows you to scroll in windows by just hovering over it (without clicking in it for giving focus). It is very useful IMHO. I am not comfortable without this option. I wish someone makes a generic tool for this (as it depends only on Windows and not on the kind of mouse). Thanks,
