While some (including me) might argue that the conventional two channel sound is the best medium for listening to music, the latest craze of surround sound is certainly catching up and everybody is heading towards the "Surround" direction. For movies and gaming, surround sound makes a significant difference to the impact they deliver.

Surround sound is most influential in the computing world, and if I were to be more specific, the gaming arena is the prime platform for surround sound application. The term "Positional audio" might not be very familiar to many, but gamers will certainly have a thing or two to say on positional audio. Surround sound is also an important factor while watching movies, especially DVD movies, which make full use of the 5.1 channel sound. As far as computers are concerned, surround sound has been around for quite a while; almost all motherboards with onboard sound come with an inbuilt 5.1 sound chip.

And if 5.1 weren't enough, you now have the 7.1 sound cards to drool over. While gamers and movie freaks will definitely rejoice over its arrival, it does not take too much to figure out the 7.1 channel setup. Just like the 5.1 setup, which has 5 satellites and a subwoofer, the 7.1 consists of 7 satellites and one subwoofer. The 7.1 speaker setup includes the side surround speakers; apart from front and rear surround speakers. The side surround speakers add to the sound positioning, which gives the extra dimension to the sound effects while playing games and watching movies.

We got our hands on the Gainward Hollywood@Home 7.1 Sound Card, which is being sold as an affordable 7.1 solution. The card features the VIA Envy 24 HT-S sound controller coupled with the VIA VT1616 Vinyl Six-TRAC Audio CODEC that supports full AC'97 2.2 specifications. The VIA Envy 24 HT-S is a striped down version of the Envy 24 HT sound controller, which has full support for 24-bit/192 KHz playback and recording. The card comes with the WinDVD 4.0 and WinRip 2.0 from Intervideo.

The Card and Specifications
As far as the dimensions are concerned, this one is slightly smaller than the Creative SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 DE and might be one of the smallest cards around. The layout is fairly simple and the connectors are color-coded. There is no sign of gold (gold connectors) here; the connectors are the regular ones with plastics used at the rim for color-coding. The bright red PCB is typically Gainward, if one recalls most of their AGP cards sport the same fiery red PCB. From left to right we see microphone socket, line in socket, front speaker channel out, surround speaker channel out, center/subwoofer channel out, rear surround channel out and optical SPDIF out.

The card does have a fairly long list of specifications; it does support most of the APIs and sports a tag of 24-bit/96 KHz as the additional USP apart from the 7.1 surround feature. To confirm the specifications and get more details on them we got the official spec sheet from VIA.

Average product.Average sound.Average price. Do we really need 7.1??? I think unless you posess a plasma/rptv/projector, excellent DVD player (not the budjet line 6K ones) and , most importantly, a highly sensitive and sophisticated pair of listening devices (also known as EARS), 7.1 or even 6.1 is useless. And as for cheapo 7.1 soundcards, I think it's complete Bull S**t. It just puts out the exact same sound from all the channels. This should be called stereo-with- 7-speakers-and-a-goddamn-sub for LOOUUDD sound. Dont waste time and money over such devices unless youre a complete moron and have similar people around you so you can brag about it. And come to think of it, do we have the space in our rooms to place those speakers all around us And DONT think of all the wires dangling around. It does you no good at all. So much for multichannel sound. HAH!! Its nothing more than a gimmick.

Do we really need 7.1? Hello??? Mr. `I'm so still in the 70's' errrrr maybe you should just sell your pc and stay put with the calculator you possess? Get a life man. Or then go get one of those chinese fm radio's for 50 bucks. If you don't have the space for 7 speakers, don't get them. Other people can afford them, have the space, and will get them. Surround sound is the way to go.

A better sound card is the Chaintech AV710 , the gainward hollywood not being a bad choice, although it features very bad DACs on all channels, all of them being some generic VIA DACs, while the AV 710 has a very high end wolfson 24/192 DAC on the rear channel, although you can use this only for stereo playback,it sounds amazing, with the reference VIA drivers, you can set the card to playback only in the rear out mode, so you have true 24/96 analog out, for just 25$. There ya go!
