Today, we review the GOM Player that is supposed to be one of the best media players around.
There are a lot of media players available, so many that one can go bonkers trying to choose the one that is the best of them all. Today, we review the GOM Player that is supposed to be one of the best media players around. Let's see if it can match the claims.
The Player
GOM is the kind of player all users pray to the Gods of software for. It supports all kinds of features for highly advanced users who desire to watch video clips at the best quality. It can also play one of your broken AVI files that other media players seldom play.
GOM Player supports most of the codecs (AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, and more) by its own embedded codec system. The best part is, it doesn't make you scourge through a zillion web pages just to get that one codec; GOM will automatically lead you to an open-source codec web-site. It also has a registered patent for playing broken AVI format or AVI video files that are being downloaded.
Advanced Playback features include VMR modes Set detail resolution, Pan and Scan, Time jump, Playback speed control, A-B repeat, and more. Overlay mixer features AVI key frame based RW/FF optimized buffer for streaming automatic ASF source filter. We'll talk more about these and other features a little later.
Features explained
Once you install the GOM player and run it for the first time, you encounter the configuration window where you first have to select the display mode. You can choose from Normal, High-Quality, and TV Output modes.

This is awesome player... i am used to MPlayer but when that fails i use GOM and it never lets me down.. it totally rox when it comes to videos... come to think of it - allows you to zoom in the video... and about audio.. i am self confessed audiophile.. the best sound that i have gotten of my comp is using amarok and alsa.. but on windows this player with DFX for winamp beats every other player hands down.... almost as good as amarok... but has no music management interface or any good playlist manager.. if you add that.. it will be perfect

haven't tried this player yt. but just wanna say that incomplete files play with VLC player easily while Media player or MP Classic and other players can't...
by some_cap, Patna, on Aug 21, 2006 06:33 PM, Report abuse
VLC Player does not have provisions for advancing by FRAME. VLC resets playback speed when it loops. Also, VLC failed to play some incomplete files that GOM Player DOES play. GOM is not (yet) pefect, but it has some advantages over ALL other players I've tried, including VLC and MPC. So no, VLC is not BEST for all people all the time.

I Just Tried the GOM player and I think it is Very Cool and I like How you Can Change the Sound with the Graphic Equalizer and So Far the Movie is Very Clear and Grrrrrreat Sound ! ! I am Still Learning All of the Functions of what it Can Do??? I have the VLC Player and I Like it for Most of My Videos But it Does NOT have a Graphic Equalizer for the Sound So I will Be Trying Out and Using Your Program for awhile now to kind of ""Feel the Picture"" thru the Great Sound ! !

Umm..VLC does have an equalizer, just got to Settings and enable Extended GUI. This player, when set to high quality, resulted in choppy playback. That's on a P4 3.3Ghz, 1GB RAM, and a X850 video card. Never had a problem with a player doing that, even at high priority. Also, this player uses twice the resources, cpu and memory, that VLC does. It needs work to be as good as VLC.

Good player for novice users. But I still prefer WMP-11 + DFX audio plugin + ffdshow (for video enhancement).

Try KLite Mega Codecs which includes WM Classic Player and BS Player all free which can play 5.1 dolby/DTS and every other format. I prefer it much over the WMP+plugin's, WinDVD, XDVD or Power DVD ... so on and so forth

Media Player Classic( part of K-Lite codec) is the best . Its light, simple yet can play most of the formtas, decode AC3 or DTS . So, currently Media Player Classic is the best. Next comes BS Player which has got some extra feature and for playing nero digital and mp4 VLC player can be used.

Media Player classic is the BEST. Coupled with a Cole2K codec pack or a K-lite Codec pack,it can play anything and it runs superbly even on a ancient P-II machine that i have.

When I try to use gom player for avis or mpgs I get this error. "The instruction at 0x02be54fb referenced memory at 0x00000002. The memory could not be written. This happened after I updated Gom player. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this.

or a change try "KM Player". Absolutely wonderful and it is still FREE. It also acts as free internet TV with lots of stations in its built in adresses which you can append with stations of your own !. P.P. Chaukimath

Try KMPlayer.(http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/) Features similiar to gomplayer but has loads more options and is freeware. It also has internal decoders for many formats like gom and vlc.It has all the options seen in all other mediaplayers plus lots more.VLC has the following problems. VLC player's interface sucks. It does not provide fine control over pause and frame step. Its subtitle selection is not automatic. I have used all these players and I rate them as follows: 1. kmplayer 2. gom player 3. media player classic 4. vlc player Techtree should consider doing a review on KMPlayer and compare it with vlc and gom.

bloody hell, name/logo screaaaaaams of gnome, and yet i can't find it's source or a debian package from the official site, am i missing something?. btw, in the past two months i have tried atleast 25 media players (both linux (again both gnome and kde) and windows), and if we exclude the media managment feature, then VLC is the BIG BAAP of all when it comes to playing everthing that you throw. (ofcourse i had the complete gstreamer pack)

looking at the customization level i think this is the best player when it comes to video playback.audio too is as good as the best one you could think of.they have also managed to creat it in less then 4MB size.deserves 5 star rating.techtree has reviewed some of the best softwares really.one click audio converter, free download manager, and now GOM.
