I am planning to get one for my office for backups, as the tapes are giving a lot of trouble. What I am worried is, what can happen if the switch is put OFF (We've got some human species capable of doing such errors) while the drive is in operation. Does it have any kind of protection for the data?

Most of the new external Drives such as the ones from Seagate or WD do not have an off switch at all! They automatically shut down when you do a "Safely Remove Hardware" in windows, or when you disconnect the USB connector. Also, in case of power failure, ive noticed that the disk keeps on spinning for 30 seconds or so and then shuts off smoothly. Third, the disk automatically goes into power save mode if its plugged in but not being accessed. This makes it very power efficient and prevents it from getting hot unnecessarily. I leave it connected full day to my server and its working perfectly! (Seagate Maxtor 500GB)

Freecom 3.5" bare drives have the " parking " protection feature. It will park the r/w heads into a safe place while the power goes off. Theoretically it will not have a bad influence if the power suddenly goes off. But please remember this is a very bad habit , users should not do this in any case. * It is not necessarily an advantage if there is no power switch as it is better to keep disks spinning rather than shut them down frequently when you need to have multiple reboots in a short time ( say installing programs, recover from a system failure ...etc ) . And think the other way, what if the power won't go off when it was unplugged from a USB port ? Won't it be more painful ? How about a switch at this moment ? all Freecom's 3.5" products have a power switch . It is just like a safety manual break to a car.
