Built solid as a brick, this is one tough drive

Rugged, good backup software, price.

A bit slow.

The Drive

This drive looks like a brick well, an elegant one; in fact, it won the prestigious iF Product Design Awards 2007 for outstanding design. It weighs just 750 gm, and is housed in a strong, thick aluminum casing with a smooth non-glossy finish, which seems to be around half a centimeter in thickness. The casing has four small rubber feet to prevent the drive from moving once placed on a surface.

LED indicator at the front

The front of the drive has a transparent window, through which the words "500GB" are visible. This is an LED that lights up when the drive is connected to a computer, and it serves as an indicator of disk activity.

Rear view of the drive

At the back is a USB socket, a power socket, and a power switch. The power socket is required since the hard drive inside is a desktop hard drive that requires more power than can be drawn from the USB data cable. A power switch is a good thing, since it lets you power down the drive when not in use without having to disconnect it from the computer.

This 500 GB hard drive comes pre-formatted with FAT32, so you can access it from just about any computer right after connecting it. You might want to quickly format it to NTFS, due to the fact that FAT32 cannot store files larger than 4 GB.

What's inside?

The drive inside is a Samsung SpinPoint T166 HD501LJ 500 GB SATA-II 7200 rpm. Being a 3.5-inch desktop hard drive, it does generate a considerable amount of heat, but thanks to the silent fan-less heat-conductive aluminum casing, the heat is radiated away as soon it is generated.

I am planning to get one for my office for backups, as the tapes are giving a lot of trouble. What I am worried is, what can happen if the switch is put OFF (We've got some human species capable of doing such errors) while the drive is in operation. Does it have any kind of protection for the data?

Most of the new external Drives such as the ones from Seagate or WD do not have an off switch at all! They automatically shut down when you do a "Safely Remove Hardware" in windows, or when you disconnect the USB connector. Also, in case of power failure, ive noticed that the disk keeps on spinning for 30 seconds or so and then shuts off smoothly. Third, the disk automatically goes into power save mode if its plugged in but not being accessed. This makes it very power efficient and prevents it from getting hot unnecessarily. I leave it connected full day to my server and its working perfectly! (Seagate Maxtor 500GB)

Freecom 3.5" bare drives have the " parking " protection feature. It will park the r/w heads into a safe place while the power goes off. Theoretically it will not have a bad influence if the power suddenly goes off. But please remember this is a very bad habit , users should not do this in any case. * It is not necessarily an advantage if there is no power switch as it is better to keep disks spinning rather than shut them down frequently when you need to have multiple reboots in a short time ( say installing programs, recover from a system failure ...etc ) . And think the other way, what if the power won't go off when it was unplugged from a USB port ? Won't it be more painful ? How about a switch at this moment ? all Freecom's 3.5" products have a power switch . It is just like a safety manual break to a car.
