Firefox 2 Beta 1 Preview

Firefox has been out for quite some time now, and we are loving it. It's time for its second major coming.

Next Page

Firefox has been out for quite some time now, and we are lovin it (no no, it's not a burger.) Yeah, so for the I-don't-know-nothin-about-Firefox lot, here it is: Firefox is an open source browser project from Mozilla, something similar to Linux wherein Linux is an OS while Firefox is an Internet Browser. There have been many versions released of the browser but the 1.5 version stands out the most. Now Mozilla is trying to further enhance the stability of the browser while improving on the usability as well. The second-coming of the most downloaded browser of all time, Firefox version 2.0 final, will soon be released to create another milestone of maximum downloads. Even Microsoft is working on IE; their outdated browser, to get it to the advanced levels as compared to Mozilla's Firefox. So, currently we have two major players in the Internet Browsers working on their next releases. Oh!! Wait. We almost forgot Opera that is available with most of it, Opera is quietly gaining market. Since it can't go head to head with the two biggies, it's cutting-in slowly from behind. Opera now has the huge market with concerns to mobile browsers.

This debate will lead to an eternity as to which browser is the best, so I'll just cut the chase and write a few of the not-so-sure improvements in the final release of Firefox 2.0.

Add-ons

Add-ons is nothing but all your extensions and themes under one roof. Now you don't have two windows to open when you want to look at the themes you've or the extensions installed. Getting both under one category isn't the major change though. You can now uninstall each of your extensions from within the Add-ons. When you select an extension it gives you buttons on it such as options, disable, and uninstall. That really takes care of the problems faced before with extensions.

Similarly, the same is applied to the themes as well. The pictures below should give you a fair idea.

there r only 2 bugging things about firefox. . . 1st of all-i usually run like 20 tabs at a time. . .and to close a tab u have 2 move ur mouse to the right hand corner everytime. . .unlike opera and IE 7 where u can close it from the tab itself. . . secondly it doesnt support integration with DAP 8 like opera and IE 7. . . .so i guess its still opera. . . .and why doznt mozilla make a mobile browser like Opera????

by Aatif, Mumbai, on Aug 07, 2006 05:57 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Aatif, You can close a tab with Ctrl+W... it easier...

by Kris, Bangalore, on Aug 07, 2006 07:53 PM, Report abuse

or the middle button click(with the mouse) on the tab(whhich u want to close) will do the job in FireFox

by King, FU, on Aug 07, 2006 08:35 PM, Report abuse

Tab mix Extension will do the trick. Go to the tab mix settings and set double click tab for close tab. Wallah!!!!!

by Raul, Puerto Rico, on Aug 07, 2006 09:04 PM, Report abuse

FF is great because its extension capabilities allows another dimension of possibilities with browsing solutions. Thus when encountered with difficulties such as yours, there are often more than one solution. Eg. you can dl the all in one gesture extension and custom operations(including closing the current tab) with quicker mouse actions. With IE you are really limited to what you can do. I think some people use FF just because they hate Microsoft, I know I am one of them

by Steven, Taipei, on Aug 10, 2006 09:08 AM, Report abuse

Hey Aatif, i too run FF with 20+ tabs or so.. best thing to do is, install Tab Mix plugin which lets you allow a close tab button on the tab itself. Also check out the new DownThem All! plugin from FF. Its better than DAP as far as i have seen. dosent crash and you can always go back and restart your download if it crashes.

by abhist, Patna, on Aug 07, 2006 02:20 AM, Report abuse   Reply

hello! All people were were talking of outsourcing, do everyone of u know to program a browser. IE remains targeted for huge number of endusers ,, firefox has been fixed 13 times or 13 release between "phoenix" then "firebird" and finally "firefox 2" when it comes to version 7 .. you wait and see their qualities. For tabbed browsing OPERA is clear winner form 1998, corporates use IE without any problems , the public like some of u get affected by wrong sites and ActiveX misuse we people dont know how to protect a single desk pc and then what's talk on open source even IE is free,

by niji, Chennai, on Aug 12, 2006 11:12 AM, Report abuse

If (niji) just want to see browse some websites IE is ok....for people who wants to experiment & be interactive even if our Firefox have 200 releases we will go thru it, what all...any new upgradation happens at fly, u just hav to restart.

firefox 2.0 is great but, still under test

by mvreddy, chennai, on Aug 10, 2006 12:00 AM, Report abuse   Reply

I went back to opera from using Firefox for 2 years because Opera operates faster and more smoothly than firefox. Although i would like to have it extensions to extend some features... (especially when it comes to blocking content and javascripts) which is easier in FF (with exts).

by Tusca, Brussels, on Aug 08, 2006 01:07 PM, Report abuse   Reply

firefox 2.0 is great but i find this new version a bit slower compared to its previous 1.5 version.may because its because its still in beta.

I love Firefox pugins .... FireFox Rulez

by Vishwajit, pune, on Aug 08, 2006 12:07 PM, Report abuse

I'm using Opera presently. Firefox is great, it takes up too much of loading time. Also working on Yahoo Mail hangs my Firefox. Wish they could incorporate ActiveX feature in FF. Good article, but not much of detail. BTW, it is possible to tweak Firefox to obtain max speed.

by Scarface, Hyderabad, on Aug 07, 2006 07:52 AM, Report abuse   Reply

MY GOD! Asking for ActiveX in Firefox? Do you people not realize that ActiveX is the reason FOR alternative Browsers. Miss those exploits, do ya?

by Loser72555, Durham NC, on Aug 07, 2006 02:17 PM, Report abuse

Dude you seriously want Active x, download IE, THIS IS WHY WE HAVE FF so guess what, your wish is not comming true. WE HATE ACTIVE X and EXPLOITS AND THE MALWARE THAT FOLLOWS

by sdfsdfsd, fsdfsd, on Aug 07, 2006 05:50 PM, Report abuse

Thanks Loser72555 and sdfsdfsd for letting me know about ActiveX. However I wonder why Yahoo Mail hangs FF when I work on it too long?

by Scarface, Hyderabad, on Aug 08, 2006 07:59 AM, Report abuse

Please improve TWO things : 1. the Loading is slow. Make it faster. 2. give option to fool servers to think FireFox as IE as there are some IE only sites like DataOne a/c page, Cyberoam page etc. baass.

by Ayan Debnath, Kolkata, on Aug 06, 2006 10:21 PM, Report abuse   Reply

There is a way to "fool" or trick servers into thinking that Firefox is IE. Its an extension called User Agent. You can also use the IE tab extension which will open a new tab in firefox using IE, if you don't want to trick them.

by justin, seattle, on Aug 06, 2006 11:02 PM, Report abuse

Firefox is W3C compliant. Why won't the websites do the same. No, instead they make things more comfortable for IE, so that the malware sites can have a field day.

by Raul, Puerto Rico, on Aug 07, 2006 09:18 PM, Report abuse

Ayan, Pal the tool / addon is called user agent switcher. There are times however you neeed real ie in such cases use IE Tab.

by Remesh G, Cochin, on Aug 08, 2006 12:10 AM, Report abuse

Firefox Browser is simply awesom,After using Firefox I forgot to use IE.Bcoz I can use IE browser within Firefox through IE tab extension Addon.Though IE 7.0 beta got a Phising site detect but its only run in Windows XP and officially not launched,Im waiting for this feature in Mozilla Firefox too.

If you want antiphishing in firefox use https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2304/ this the TrustWatch antiphishing extension for firefox.

by Raul, Puerto Rico, on Aug 07, 2006 09:50 PM, Report abuse

I think Firefox is really great compared to the other biggie, IE. As a web programmer, I find it easier to get my coding to work with it, and the ease of use and availability of add-ons really make it the superior browser by a long shot!

by Donnie Means, Yorktown, on Aug 06, 2006 09:54 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Thats right Donnie. If you make your web pages to work correctly in firefox you will have a web page that will basically work correctly with any browser. Including IE.

by Raul, Puerto Rico, on Aug 07, 2006 09:42 PM, Report abuse

Sure Firefox is 100 times superior to IE, but Opera has so many wise and super convenient things that bring new quality to my interaction with Internet, that I mostly use Opera. FF still has a long way to go.

by Victor, Moscow, on Aug 06, 2006 10:22 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Opera is a history. Thats why they switched from Software with AD to Free, to regain its lost share. Where could you find such huge no of plug-ins for Opera !

by Ayan Debnath, Kolkata, on Aug 06, 2006 10:25 PM, Report abuse

Opera is far from over. Opera integrates many innovations like mouse gestures, a BitTorrent Client etc. Also opera is available for many platforms. Infact there is version of opera which is compatible with Nintendo Ds. Even Wii is going to sport a Opera Browser.

by Dhawal, Mumbai, on Aug 07, 2006 12:26 AM, Report abuse

Yes, Opera's future is out of the PC box. It can only exist of Mobile devices.

by Ayan Debnath, Kolkata, on Aug 07, 2006 09:27 AM, Report abuse

Is that why they started giving that darn thing away? Use to have to pay ,if i remember correctly. Firefox is always been open-source and free . Don't think Opera will be letting anyone peek under their hood like firefox does. Not only do you peek under the hood, but get to help with its development. People at opera don't do that buddy.

by Raul, Puerto Rico, on Aug 07, 2006 09:34 PM, Report abuse

I dont know why nobody seems to mention Maxthon. It is basically tabbed browsing for IE. I use it for my regular browsing because I like the way it works better than firefox. I use firefox for web development because of the brilliant plugins available for developers.

by Timothy, Cape Town, on Aug 07, 2006 11:42 AM, Report abuse   Reply

Maxathon is basically dressup for IE and has all of IE flaws under the hood. Not a secure browser.Better off with IE 7 ,and I am a Firefox user.

Firefox loads slowly because of all the extensions, security et all...but it's the fastest once it loads...with tabbed browsing, nobody closes it until session out...also it's lightweight on the processor... u can keep it running always

most of the "new" features in ff 2.0 is already incorporated in opera released last year itself. but what to do opera doesnt have a future in pcs just cos third party softwares like flashget, dap, mcafee site advisor etc, seldom support opera. the addons of ff r gr8 but with opera u will never need an addon opera rocks and most of the features (clos button on every tab, history of closed tabs) in ff 2.0 is "inspired" from opera

may whatever be the case FF rulez and yes the best may whatever abt1 gas ti say. hey ayan sorry 2 say dude, but the extension for fooling servers like cyberoam, ie, user agent si pretty good and what i miss in FF is only activex which is required for certain sites, but with time that too wont be a missed feature on FF.

by Vishal_Kadakia, mumbai, on Aug 07, 2006 09:00 AM, Report abuse

Yes, you are right but you are missing one major point. ActivX is a major path to insert virus through IE, specially from Cracks/Pron sites. So, personally I don't want the support of ActivX.
