Epson Stylus C82

Epson Stylus C82

Gagan Gupta, Mar 05, 2004 0000 hrs IST

Epson printers have had a pretty decent track record with us so far.

Good speed and print run per cartridge

Washed out colors, Unsatisfactory details

Color Test: We printed out a sheet with gradients of RGB and CMYK bands, which start from the darkest shade to the lightest, eventually fading to white.
Result: The colors were quite disappointing considering that the printer uses a separate cartridge for each color. Each color, with the exception of black looked somewhat washed out.
Time Taken: 10 minutes 4 seconds

Border Test: This document contained lines stretching out all the way to the edge of the document, to test the printer's borderless printing capabilities.
Result: The C82 did not support full borderless printing. It left a half-centimeter gap from the page border.

500 dpi Image Test: We printed a 500 dpi image with minute details and varying colors.
Result: Washed out! The colors made the printout look depressing.
Time Taken: 10 minutes 8 seconds

600 dpi Image Test: Same as the 500 dpi test, only done with a higher resolution (600 dpi) image.
Result: Just like the 500 dpi print test. The print clarity was nothing more than average and the colors looked washed out.
Time Taken: 11 minutes 23 seconds

Speed Test: Here we printed 20 identical documents at normal quality and then calculated the printer's speed in documents per minute.
Result: The printer was capable of printing 5.2 pages per minute, which is pretty good.

Print Run: Normal quality prints were taken of a document containing some amount of text and a multi-color image to test the cartridge life of a printer.
Result: 548 total pages in one cartridge lifespan.

Conclusion
As you can tell, our tests on the Epson C82 gave very unsatisfactory results when it came to print quality, but did quite well when it came to speed printing. That along with a good cartridge life may appeal to some people to whom the print quality doesn't matter much as long as they have a cost effective workhorse. With a market price of Rs. 6,800 and cartridge prices of Rs. 1430 for black ink and Rs. 1,905 for color ink (Rs. 635 x 3 colors), the print economy for Epson C82 comes to an approximate of Rs. 6.33 per page.

So if you want a workhorse without much care for quality prints, this may be just right for you. But if quality is a major concern to you, you may want to look elsewhere.

yes, Epson CX3500 is full of crap!!! I never got to print any colored pages yet and all colored tanks are supposedly empty, black tank failed too! My printer is still brand new & useless... go buy other brands instead!!!

jobbee | boston | 01/05/07 01:10 PM | Report abuse

Having owned Epson photo printers in the past with very good results, I was VERY disappointed to discover the Epson CX3500 (3 color tank, 1 black tank) all-in–one machine I purchased here in Thailand (same model is CX3600 in Europe, CX4600 or CX3200 I think in US) was nothing more than an ink scam. It took 1/3 of my color ink tanks to get the print head clean before I could even use it. I printed out a total of 4 pages of photos and printed nothing more in color (setting on text, black ink only) and ran out of the color tanks in 1 week of text printing. Purchasing a complete new set of the color tanks I did no color printing at all and after 3 weeks of text page printing (and not that much) the color tanks were ½ empty. I then went to print color photos and had to clean the print head 4 times (still did not fully clean the heads) and it emptied the last ½ of the color tanks. I still had ¼ of the original black ink tank and had already gone through 2 sets of expensive color tanks for 4 pages of photos. It turns out that every time you print a black ink only page (including the copy feature), the printer is still using up color ink. When the color tanks are empty, the printer will not let you print a black ink only page (even if you have plenty of ink in the black ink tank) until you replace the color tanks with new ones so you have to constantly keep buying them. Leaving the US, I gave up a Canon 960 (6 tank printer) due to 120 vs 220 volt here in Thailand that you could print pages of very high quality photos all day and all night and not deplete one of the tanks. It also did not seem to use any color ink if black ink only was selected for printing. I do not see this as anything more than a forced color ink purchase scheme on the part of Epson. I am investigating other printers than Epson and looking at the details so I do not fall into this trap again. As soon as I replace the CX3500, I will take a hammer to it. I dare not even give it away lest some other unsuspecting person support this scheme.

I am having the exact same problem with the CX3500, and I feel like you're being very polite about this piece of crap printer. If you ever come across a solution to this problem, please do let me know.

worst printer I've ever owned. the ink cartridges are very expsnensive (you have to buy FOUR) and need to be replaced every 3 months. my printer has broken down after 14 months. this printer eats up ink EVERY time it is turned on, and now my printer simply doesn't work. it prints blank pages

My C82 just had the same problem. Changed the ink cartridge and it won't print black. Have cleaned multiple times and still doesn't work. The printer is just over a year old and I think it's dead now!

Purchased 2 C82 printers less than 2 years ago. First one stopped printing before it was one year old. The second one has now done the same thing. Have always used genuine Epson ink but after replacing with new cartidges and multiple cleanings the printer will not print black. Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem. It is a shame to throw away 2 almost new printers!

My first C82 quit while still under warranty (4 months)Was given a new one to replace. It has been working O.K. for over a year. Had trouble with one print head. Had it cleaned by a guy who took out the cartridge and squirted windex on the print head with a hypo needle. It has been working well ever since. I am now using ink from Inkjets and everything is still O.K. touch wood. I don't get a good print out in draft but with the price of their ink, who cares. Color pictures are still good. Ink is costing me less than 15% of Epson ink even with shipping and handeling from USA into Canada.

I wouldn't wish one on people I don't like... totally worthless if the printer stops printing after the third cartridge change EVERY TIME. My church just finished off their second, and they don't print over 70 pages a week. Class action is right.

Happened to me five minutes ago. Any answers? Thanks!

Simmons | American Fork | 03/02/05 05:42 AM | Report abuse

The answer is the same to all of you that can't get any printing at all out of your Epson printer - check that the tube under the cleaning head assembly ( bottom right of the machine, under where the print heads usually rests) has not come off the downpointing nozzle , if it has, simply re-connecting it, most likely will solve the problem - I wonder how many perfectly good printers are thrown out because of this.

David | UK | 13/02/06 10:23 PM | Report abuse

WOW! David you were right!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had an extremely important document to print (and it was late at night). Your help was VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! I was amazed that connecting the tube fixed the "blank page" problem! Although I do have to say it was very difficult to fix - I found that plyers worked well to do the job. Thanks again! YOU ARE A GENIOUS! And it saved me from having to buy another printer!! =)

I have an epson stylus c84. changed black ink cartridge (twice) and blank pages print out only. Have spent tons of time and $$$ trying to correct this. E-mailed and phone Epson and was treated with total disregard. Anyway to fix this, or should I buy a new printer (NOT) an epson. Any recommendations?

I too have an Epson C84 that prints only blank pages. Returned what I thought were defective ink cartridges...reinstalled 3rd set...still blank. Help anyone?

Anonymous | Ann Arbor | 22/10/05 04:37 AM | Report abuse

Donna, did you find a solution? Same thing has happened to me, changed cartridge and now printer will not print black.

Elaine | Redondo Beach | 11/01/06 04:51 AM | Report abuse

A common problem. Check that the clear plastic tube under the cleaner assembly - (bottom right of the printer under where the printing part usually lies, it's the bit with a sponge to soak up excess ink) is still connected to the black nozzle hanging down, you'll need to move the printing parts to the left to get at it. - The top part of this cleaner assembly slides to the right and will need to be held back if you need to reconnect the tubing. A very fiddly job. See here for how to remove the printers outer housing to give better access: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/c821.html

I have an Epsom C82 with same problem, will now only print in pink. Black was working until I ran it out trying to get the other colours to work, replaced black cartridge and now that doesn't work either.PC World recommended this printer just over 12 months ago, now are not interested because it is over a year old. Will not buy another Epsom and whatever I do buy it will not come from PC World.

I just replaced my black and no printing. Then replace the colors one at a time. Each time I replaced a cartridge it wouldn't print. Got no satisfaction for Epson. A $30 discount certificate except I have already spent $120 in new cartridges. This happened to my C80 but I thought that was an anomaly. Been on another web site where others have reported same problems. Class Action?

Anonymous | Boston | 05/02/05 08:52 AM | Report abuse

Same here. Replaced black - no print - replaced the black - no print - cleaned so many times I used the color - replaced that - no print. I e-mailed Epson - as if they give a damn.

I am using epson stylus color 440. It is working well since 1999 but of lately it stopped functioning due to printer head problem. All the three lights burn that incicate maintainence. The service office at Secunderabad mentions to change the head costing over Rs:3500/=. The same was done last year at the same price where the entire logic board and head were replaced. Advice what you can suggest.

Our Epson Stylus C82 died this weekend after replacing the black cartridge. We have tried all sorts of things but nothing has worked. An added irritation is that the ink level in the black catridge has fallen a third already according to the print window but it hasn't printed a single thing since it was put into the printer!! I didn't realise this was a common problem until I looked on the Net. It has really altered my view of Epson. I've heard of built-in obsolescence but this is ridiculous.

AMB | Birmingham UK | 29/03/05 09:24 PM | Report abuse Reply

Absolute Junk. My Epson C82 was sold on good authority by PC World to me just over a year ago, needless to say I won't be taking their advice again or buying Epson products. After 3 lots of ink cartridges costing £210 and minimal home use the printer has decided to die and cease to print anything at all, even when it is full of ink. If you dare to switch it on, it will also go through an ink guzzling routine for two minutes before it will let you print anything at all. If that isn't enough, the cartridges are also fitted with a little ROM chip which not only prevents you from re-filling the cartridges if you so wish! but also periodically assumes you are using 0.5% of ink everytime you switch it on (which is probably true due to the default cleaning routine) which means that when the printer assumes that the inkjet cartridges are empty . . . it won't let you print. GREAT WORK EPSON. Instead you must spend your hard earned dosh on four expensive new Epson cartridges, even though you don't need them. I pulled mine to bits to do an autopsy on it - I couldn't believe it died so young.

I have always been a big promoter of EPSON printers however, their after sales service in Pune India leaves a lot to be desired. It seems the Company just washes their hands off after selling their product to an individual customer. I do not know how they treat their corporate customers ??. Because of the electro dissipation of ink I maintain they should have better control on the dispersion of the ink as compared to the hot air bubble method of ink dispersion.
