A list of epics that would make great games

Next Page

No! this isn't a feature about the gaming company Epic: when I say epic games, I mean games of epic proportion. Let me elaborate: there are so many stories in mythology and history that would make a great game. I aren't talking about WWII, as that has been overdone; I'm talking about epics like the Mahabharata; about legends like Alexander and his epic journey of conquest. Now, these are stories that would make great games. I'm listing 5 such epic stories (fiction as well as non-fiction).

The Mahabharata
In my childhood, Sundays used to be lovable - thanks to the Mahabharata. TV, during those golden was great - till the Saas and Bahu took over. Anyway, the Mahabharata series was so good because the Mahabharata is one of the best stories you'll ever read. Not many know that it's actually a poem, but that's not the point. A rumor is out: a game based on the Mahabharata is in development. The story is so fascinating - what with the Pandava and Kaurava princes, Duryodhana and the dice game. Talk about having a gambling addiction! The game can have large battles, diplomacy, strategy: it may well redefine the genre of gaming - in fact it'll create a new one. The game would have universal appeal - as it's not only in India but also abroad that you've great fans of the series. The game can fit into any genre: it can be a Real Time Strategy (RTS), a Role Playing Game (RPG), or a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG). I, for one, would love to play it - come as it may.

Saladin
He was a great conqueror - a man who's respected the world over. At the height of his power, he controlled Egypt, Iraq, and Syria. Most of you'd remember him from the movie Kingdom of Heaven. He's none other than Salah al-Din. If anyone here enjoyed the movie, they'd definitely remember the character Salah al-Din - the bold, strong commander of a massive army (these are the usual traits of a great hero). Imagine playing such a character in a game that does justice to his character. I know Saladin did make a appearance in an AOE game, but I believe he deserves more than just a small cameo.

What do you mean when you say "looking beyond"? Do you want Indians to write games/movies about events of other countries. Indians know well about their own history rather than other countries (even better than World War). Meanwhile, these epics are not meant only for Indians. They have concepts that must be known by the whole world. Whatever you said was not a fact. You said it because you wanna sound like a modern guy who thinks Sanskrit and Vedas are only for traditional ppl. Change your attitude. Ther's nothing wrong in spreading good principles to the world. india is our mother country!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

Why don't we Indians look beyound these Mahabharat, Ramayana, Krishna and Hanuman stories!!? Come on people, every Indian Cartoon, Animated serial, even TV serials are based on these! Don't we have anything else to entertain? Something original? Something the whole world will accept, play and enjoy? We should do something to target people across every part of the world! (I know this is going to anger some of you there, but this is a fact)

samrock ... you are some 13 yr old wannabe firangi right ?? if you are i cant blame you for your stupid comment... if not...you need to educate yourself !

by Yatin, Mumbai, on Oct 12, 2007 10:18 AM, Report abuse

See just like I said!!! U are all so obsessed with this stories that u don't want to wake up to see the rich history and potential we have to make really awesome games. I never said that making games on these epics are wrong. I just said that make something else too! Why is every Indian Animated film on either Hanuman, Ganesha , Krishna and then again they give you Bala Hanuman, Bala Krishna, and Bala Ganesha!!! We have been seeing them all our lives! Can't we make games on great Warriors' struggle for Indian Independence? The evolution of Indian Civiliation? (Ages of Empire style) Game on some warrior Indian king. Game on Indian acient marital arts. Don't they have some "social messages" to people? And to people who made comments like "if not...you need to educate yourself !" "you have no common sense man,", I say, its you who needs to wake up, coz I have been in making games for many many years, and I defintely know what I am writing and what people "really" want when it comes to gaming!

Samrock, the message you are trying to convey is right, but the first post made people misunderstand you... There was a game about Bhagatsingh some time ago which I liked. There should be more such games like Age of Empires around the time of Alexander / Moghuls / Marathas / Nizams etc...

Yeah Grawp U are right, I should have said this in the first post only. Anyways, I was just giving my views not trying to start a verbal warfare :D

you have no common sense man, you should read entire story of mahabharat or ramayan from books if you want summery of these stories then you can read Bhagavad Gita, it has deep study of life and it's methods to achieve objectives of life. At least media peoples (who are creating pictures/games on these stories) are giving a social messages to peoples(at least some social common sense is created because of this and every movie/game should hit the box office -this expectation from movie/game maker is wrong, try to understand what they are showing-may be right ,wrong ,perfect... and then decide what to pick up from that movies/game), and every time mind needs different, i know it is difficult to keep one type of ideology in mind for long time-(but that is true relationship between mind and knowledge), and first of all stories are made by original persons(you can take it as entertainment or as reality or false that is an individual question- do not discuss with mass communication). "I know this is going to anger some of you there, but this is a fact" - nobody is going to anger for you, you are littlie. And nothing is like to think beyond, look beyond in life it doesn?t harms to life. We need to think really beyond cause we can judge right contents of life ?mind has access to n number of dimensions and directions it is not imp to which direction it is looking at(cause it is speedy you can change direction of mind very easily if you have control on it ), it is imp what it is picking knowledge out of it. God bless you?..

Saladin did not get a cameo in AoE2, he had an entire campaign devoted to him!!

Great stories for great games truly! I wish some game producers take up the Mahabharata and the Ramayana and other stories of various Indian Kings and dynasties(that are full of political intrigue, empire building, conquests and battles). Imagine upgrades for Indian archers -branching arrows, agni astra, vajra astra, nag astra, brahama astra etc and the concept of kshatriya heroes increasing their hitpoints and gaining new weapons by doing tapas!

Try Mohammed and get your head cut off. These jokers can only make games from Hindu epics because we are tolerant. If they touch other religions they will lose their body parts
