Features
Going by current standards, the D410 severely lacks some of the basic peripherals required in computing. A floppy drive or some optical drive at least should be built-in. Nonetheless, the D410 comes with an external CD-RW cum DVD combo drive which features a proprietary customized USB interface - the External Dell D/Bay. So you can't use it with any other PC. The external drive seemed pretty efficient though. It could read anything that you could feed inside its tray. It even read scratched DVDs and CDs too. And it also doubled up as a CD Writer. Max write speed 24X. Just enough.
The D410 is equipped with a rather soft and responsive yet cramped keyboard. The keyboard features all the regular keys but in dual or triple function format. The entire numerical pad is coupled with the alphabetical keys. Using these can be quite a sore effort, which was incidentally my experience too. It doesn't matter if you have small or big fingers, the keys aren't comfortable to 'find' and ' hit on'.
But the most annoying feature was providing another set of left and right mouse buttons. More than their presence, it was their location that was the cause of the pain. Well, these two buttons are located exactly below and parallel to the space bar. What's the trouble, you ask? Say, you have to type something in Word, and of course you would keep spaces between your words, now won't you? And every time you press the space bar thinking it is the space bar, and happen to hit either the left or the right mouse button, what do you get. Lots of wasted hours writing out a simple document. And, there is no option to disable them too.

Hi Nikhil, Don't go for Sony, if you are serios to buy a laptop please go for Dell, Lenovo / HP. Sony is having mjor problems. I have Sony the same model which you are asking for, not even 2 years the mother board has gone. So, be carefull with Sony, Sony is only ment for look and feel but performance is worst.

Niketu Shah, I seriously would like to question your sanity for testing this particular laptop for the games.It is meant to be a Notebook and not a laptop,which means it is extremely mobile.With the limited space available for the keyboard i do believe it would be cramped but end of the day the user would def get used to the layout of the keys.In the future please avoid testing games on notebooks so that it could be give an unbiased test report.

Hi Janak, dont ever do such a thing. If your friend is coming to India, then its ok, otherwise to send a laptop from US he will have to courier it. And if your friend does that, the laptop is sure to lay in hands of custom officers. Now for that, they will call you up and ask for a heft amount as tax (in other words bribe). You will simply end up scratching your head. The courier company is helpless in this. And this is not the end to the story, what the custom guys actually do is open is open up the gadget (they have the permission to do that to check some if it carries some illegal material) but what they actually do is change the parts of the gadget with duplicate parts and you will end up scratching your head afterwards. Also, support from company is very important. Buy from Dell India and they will provide you with full support. US laptop wont carry any support here. All this I am saying is of my past experience where my client had couriered me a laptop from Chicago. I have gone all that I have written above. In short, dont get your friend mail you a laptop from there, you will end up paying more that what you will be expending here.

Hi Sundar, well, my budget is under 50k so I suppose this model (Acer TM 4150NLCi) fits my requirements and is value for money machine as you said it. I guess I would buy an extra stick of 256 MB RAM to make it a 512 MB. Otherwise the configuration is pretty good. The one you suggested (4601NWLMi) is also very good but right now it will be hard on my pockets :( If one has the budget for 70k can surely go for it. Anyways, thanks for your inputs.

Yeah, get another 256mb ram. it sure does help. It will cost around rs. 2500( transcend). But get it installed from the retailer, or else the warranty will be void.

I recently picked an Acer from the US and it cost me around Rs. 33K. Specs were 1.3GHZ Celeron, 60GB HDD, 512MB RAM (PC 2700), 15.4 inch wide (crystal bright type), CD-RW/DVD combo, WinXP Home, 802.11, 1394, all the usual ports. How fast is it? More than enough for me (I do not play games, ever). I loaded it with XP Prof. and it always boots in flat 45 seconds or less. This model is not available in India but something very close is available at say 38K. And why am I telling you all this? Because : 1) The best 'value for money' deals are between 35K and 40K. 2) Whatsoever laptop you buy, within max 2 years it will sound so outdated you wouldn't like to work on it. 3) What is available today at 40K was costing upward of 70K just 18 months ago! So, it cannot be a bad choice because sometime while ago people were paying twice the amount for the same thing. 4) Judge carefully what is it that you truly need. You might end up paying a large fraction of total cost for features which add a small fraction to your usability. A thumb rule is that for any fancy system, 50% of the cost is for features which you will use only 5% of the time. Invest maximum in RAM and HardDisk (these always fall short). Any decent processor and a screen of 15" (I'd say even 14") will suffice. Wireless LAN (802.11) is OK but Firewire (1394) is useless. Novelty features like multi-card readers are for a very specific audience so judge whether you are in that category. Keep lots of USB ports. Evaluate whether you need any PS/2 ports or say serial or parallel port. Also, evaluate the design ergonomics. You might not realise but some design features can make life hell! Checkout the touchpad and it buttons, placement of keys on the keyboard, placement of some ports like say the audio out port. Last, this review is meant for non-gamers. Hope it helps. - Gurdas

The touch pad screen can be disabled from the control panel mouse properties iam currently using the joystick and have disabled the touch screen as well as its mouse buttons.
