Enter the wireless world of internet telephony. This one's Skype limited, could it serve as a solution for the hyper-ISD-caller?
Voice and video chatting have become quite popular since their inception; hence, the commercialization was inevitable. Consumers enjoyed this facility made available first by Skype, and the bandwagon of MSN, Yahoo and the likes followed. Even the BPOs have adopted high-bandwidth lines instead of the regular telephone lines for business, it being cheaper.
You must have seen some regular phones replaced by the Net4Phonewalla phones at one place or another. It's slowly picking up, and one can predict that eventually this, or some internet facility is destined to replace the regular landline to make it better and cheaper. The news we have for you today is that the future is beginning to arrive. If you have a good, steady internet connection, here's a proposition to consider from Creative.

Creative's Broadxent has all its focus concentrated on the wireless and internet market. They have just released a Skype phone in India, the Internet DECT Phone. Let's see if it can offer a good enough convention for us to make the switch.

Do we have any dealers for this in Pune? What is buying Skype credit limit? Have you ever tested this on GPRS connection by using mobile handset as modem?
Shailendra Natu | Pune | 13/07/07 03:46 PM | Report abuse Reply
Unless your GPRS access & time are free regular dialing @ 1.75 per minute is certainly going to be cheaper. Skype calls to US landlines or mobile phones cost around Rs. 0.90 per minute.

The Internet DECT Phone sells for Rs. 5,850 with a one year warranty. The phone would suit those who have a steady internet line and keep making personal or business calls abroad. It offers you mobility while attending an internet call. This concept is still in its initial stages, but should soon cross all bounds to completely replace landlines

Need more clarification about following negative points: Skype puts an extra burden on those who connect to the Internet without NAT, as their computers and network bandwidth may be used to route the calls of other users. and In December 2006, the Government of India announced they are preparing a crackdown on Internet telephony services, citing security risks and loss of revenue. The clampdown is targeted at outsourcers and other Indian IT businesses that use foreign owned Internet telephony services, such as Skype and Yahoo!, to cut their phone bills and evade the six percent revenue share and 12 percent tax imposed on local services by the government. According to The Times of India, companies must reveal the names of licensed service providers they purchase bandwidth and internet telephony minutes from. Companies will also have to undertake that they will not use the services of unlicensed internet service providers.

What are the minus points? What call rates if land lines to be called? Let us see some more details. Looks interesting.

Land line call tariffs are a function of Skype service. Nothing to do with the product under review. Go to the Skype site & find out.

India has still to go a long way in the field of broad band internet before people can think of spending money on such products.

For once I totally disagree with you pal. I am using BSNL Broadband, use Skype + Torrent all the time and never face any issue. Having stayed at US, I am really surprised with what's happening at least at BSNL front. And surely I am hopeful.
XTechie | Pune | 13/07/07 03:10 PM | Report abuse
Same here. I am on a 256 kbps 24 hour unlimited download scheme. I don't have to pay any rental for my phone line. With an additional 111/= per month I have unlimited outgoing calls to any and every BSNL - land line as well as mobile phone in Gujarat. Using Skype & call forwarding + pstn connectivity features on my addon all my relatives across India & abroad can call anyone with BSNL subscription whatsover in Gujarat for FREE. I have not had any problems with the system.

The main drawback is you got to have the PC switched on in order to receive the calls. We need phones which can be directly connected to the broadband modem, then we can do away with the PC.
aks | Bangalore | 13/07/07 08:00 PM | Report abuse Reply
You could probably get the voip adapter which directly plugs into the modem on one side and into any type of telephone handset on the otherside. So u can enjoy a lot of free calls between your handset and any other pc in the world or landlines and mobiles in some countries like US canada etc. U dont need your PC to be running and u are always online with the adapter, but only condition is that u have a stable condition as mentioned in the article before of atleast 128 kbps.

These kind of phones are available in US for between US$ 200/= to $ 500/=. The price range is also indicative of quality, performance, reliability & ease of setup. These simply hook up to the router on your system with an RJ45 cable.
