Cowon iAudio F2

Cowon iAudio F2

Ameya Dalvi, Mar 23, 2007 1751 hrs IST

The iAudio F2 is a feature-rich audio player with good sound quality but can burn a hole in your pocket.

Excellent sound quality, Comfortable earphones, Good bundle, Good build, Feature-rich, Direct MP3 encoding, Supports wide variety of audio formats, Upgradeable firmware, Good battery life.

Poor FM Tuner, Buttons too small for comfort, Bit expensive.

I walked into the elevator fiddling around with my mp3 player. After a quick glance at the gizmo, the liftman shot me a query - "Is that a new mobile phone?" You would expect one to be surprised or feel an unstoppable urge to ridicule his ignorance, but nothing like that happened. I don't blame him one bit because a miniature mobile phone is precisely what the iAudio F2 resembles. I am not one for making an audio player look like a mobile phone unless it has communication capabilities; something like the Walkman series of phones from Sony Ericsson (yes, I call them audio players with a high quality multimedia phone built in. I am extremely fond of their sound quality). In this case, the product in focus is purely an audio player/recorder. So let's take a look at how it fares at its core expertise.

For starters, I will refrain from generalizing my opinion about the looks as attractive or otherwise. I leave that to your discretion. But if you ask me, I wasn't in awe over the design; however there were several around me (guys and girls alike) who were mighty impressed with its looks. Also, rather than me describing the looks in detail, you can simply take a look at the picture below and judge for yourself.

There are nine backlit buttons at the front along with a 1.3-inch TFT-LCD screen with a resolution of 128 x 160 and capable of displaying 260K colors. The Power On/Off/Hold notch is present on the side with the headphone jack and audio-in port at the top of the player. It measures 34.8 x 72.9 x 16.7 mm (W X H X D) and weighs 39 grams with the built-in Lithium Polymer rechargeable battery.

The Bundle
The bundle, as is the case with all iAudio players, is quite comprehensive and comprises of a pair of earphones, a USB cable, a mini-USB to standard USB connector, a Line-in cable, a neck cord, a user manual, and a driver and software CD with applications like JetShell (file transfer) and JetAudio VX (media player/converter). The bundled earphones are similar to the ones that you get with the U3 model and thankfully not the uncomfortable mini hammers that you get with the U2 and G3 models. Not only are these more comfortable but they sound good and don't crack at peak volume.

Cowon iAudio D2 review and introduction into india is urgently required. Because this is one very acclaimed DAP on the net. While giving a review of a product TT should give email of the source in india.

I think it is a good idea to design a audio player, like mobilephone. It seems handy and comfertable to hold.we can easily get use to it.You dont have to struggle for watching the buttons. It very clear to and watchfull. As design goes its not to sexy to watch, but seems decent and good.I dont know how expensive it is to own.If it is reasonable, its worth to own one.thankyou

However good it might be- it is OVER PRICED at Rs. 7500-for a 1 GB Player. I fail to understand why manufacturers like Cowon are pricing themselves out of Indian Market specially since now the flash memory is dirt cheap. 2 GB F2 is $ 110 in the US market and still struggling there as there are now 4 GB players in $ 100 range in international market. I think Cowon F2 will sell in insignificant numbers over here- unless the price goes down to a more affordable & sensible range of about 4k for 1 GB & 5k for 2 GB.

Mr. Vijay, I dont think you are very well versed with the current Indian duty structure. Kindly note that it is not only Cowon but other manufacturers also have to pay higher duties when they import goods into India. The prices are also inclusive of 12.5% VAT. Flash memory is of various types, if you are comparing the pen drive market to the mp3..then please dont, as the price fluctuations in flash affect the pen drive, memory card and DRAM segment more than it does to the mp3/mp4 segment. The US market is not subjected to such high duties as India. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS VERY CLEARLY BEFORE MAKING ANY COMMENTS ON THE DOLLAR PRICING. If you would like to know anything in further detail you can call me on 022-28743716. Thank you. Varun

Varun, iAudio from Bombay transcend T-630- 2 GB for 3.5k and 1 GB for 2.6k at sify, Then U dont have much chance for 1 GB at 7.5k.

Hello Vijay, Go to ebay and you will probably find other 1gb and 2gb models for less than the prices you have mentioned. If you want an mp3 player to satisfy your hunger for one then there are several options available. One of our other models the U3, which also you had posted comments on is doing pretty well in the market and is priced similar to the F2. U3 got voted the best flash player by Chip in dec. also the best performance award by Chip in July and excellent/5star ratings from Computer Active, Living Digital, PC world etc and this is just in India! (if anyone wishes to receive a copy of any of these reviews please send me an email). Also note that you are comparing a model that doesn?t play mp4. F2 has excellent screen resolution very high battery life, excellent audio and a host of other features. You seem to have a lot of knowledge about this, I would love to chat with you over the phone and get some more feedback from you about our players. If you cant call then please send me a detailed email. Look forward to hearing from you. Varun

Mr. Vijay looks like every body is talking about the price withought seing the rich features, the sound quality, the styling and the good support Cowon is offering. You cannot compare a Mercedes like Cowon like others. Don,t ever try to compare the prices of US in India. When you really compare pricing Hair cut in US Costs $50 just Rs50 In India.A Battery cell in costing 5 times in USA than in India. You should take lot of parameters before considering a price and commenting. I own the Cowon and am proud of it.

Mr VIJAY.. I dont think u've seen the popularity of certain players that provide lesser memory and are far more overpriced than this one!! (Apple pops into my mind in a nanosecond) Comparitively- This has got better sound, far better battery life, and I think is a steal at the current price..
