Corsair Flash Voyager 32 GB

Corsair Flash Voyager 32 GB

This is the largest USB Flash drive we've ever handled portability like never before!

Fast read speeds, shock-proof and splash-proof rubber jacket, USB extension cable.

Slow write speeds, lacks any "real" security feature or software bundle, expensive.

Features

The Flash Voyager is rather chubby. The size is just as much as that of an average size thumb: 75 mm in length, 15 mm in thickness, and 24 mm in width at the widest point. It weighs 17 grams.

The exterior of the drive consists of a rubber jacket that serves a dual purpose -- it protects the drive from mechanical shock, and also makes it splash-proof thanks to the rubber cap that snugly fits onto the USB plug. We dropped it a couple of times, and the rubber jacket really works as an excellent shock absorber. We did not try to find out whether it can protect from water, though

The rubber jacket even has a design, black playing the major role, while there are sky-blue edges on the sides along the length. This is the area where you tend to hold the stick, and it helps you get a firm grip. Still, the rubber jacket is also sort of a magnet for dust and fine fibers, and tends to quickly get dirty.

At the bottom of the drive, just above the hole where the lanyard is to be attached, is an activity LED that glows bright blue.

ReadyBoost and More

The drive shows up as soon as you plug it in a USB port. In Vista, it prompts you to either use it as a storage drive or to speed up the computer using ReadyBoost.

Ready to Boost

Under Device Properties, we found that it does actually pass the inbuilt test for ReadyBoost readiness.

You can't format the drive with the NTFS filesystem

The capacity of the drive in Disk Management shows as 30.25 GB. We noticed that the drive is formatted with FAT32, and you can't even format it with NTFS using conventional methods under Windows XP. A major disadvantage of this is that you cannot carry any file larger than 4 GB, so forget a dual-layer DVD image; you cannot even carry a full single-layer DVD image.

TrueCrypt secures your drive by encrypting your data on the fly

This is a value drive, so we did not expect security frills. Earlier, Corsair would provide a mini CD for the software; later, to cut on costs, it used to ship the software on the drive itself, but now it just mentions the software on the Web site and redirects you to the TrueCrypt Free Open-Source encryption software site, from where you can download and install the software. Free doesn't mean bad these days; TrueCrypt is a really useful software that encrypts the drive, and you get security by different encryption algorithms including 256-bit AES. TrueCrypt is available not only for Windows but also for Linux and Mac.

The rate at which prices are coming down these pen drives could well one day pose threat to sales of optical storage media.

when you said "But the write speeds for block sizes of 64 KB and over are around 23 MB/s, which is good, though not the fastest." , I hope you meant the "READ" speeds.
