Contacts, databases and a hell lot of visiting cards are part and parcel of most marketing and sales managers who travel frequently and exchange visiting cards with people on a daily basis. Carrying around these cards in your wallet can be quite cumbersome and though most prefer a card folder, what if you lose it in some bizarre fire incident? Your entire life as a sales manager might be ruined. A good alternative to a card folder is a card reader that can store your entire contact database onto the PC in no time.
The CardScan 600cx is the product to look forward to if you have to handle lots of visiting cards. Measuring 6.75" x 4.75" x 2" and weighing 396g, it reads data from cards within seconds and stores it on the PC. Apart from the lightweight business card reader, the package also comprised of a USB cable, a manual and the Version 6 software CD for detection and transfer of data.
Sharp scanning
The CardScan 600cx was detected easily and installed without any hassle. Its basic operation is quite simple - to scan data from the visiting card and convert it into digital format. Just insert the card and transfer data. The reader scans a card as soon as you insert it in the front slot. The card once scanned is displayed in two different windowpanes; the top pane containing the data categorized automatically and the image scanned in the below pane. What impressed me were the overall scan and transfer speed (under three seconds) and accuracy (90%) of the cards scanned. Data like Name, Company address, Designation, Telephone, fax, email address and Web site were categorized within seconds and transported in the respective fields without any human interference.
We scanned over 40 cards, which varied in data, thickness and finish (plain and gloss). The overall result was quite commendable. Cards could be inserted in any direction and then rotated automatically using the software. Even though the card scanner claims to read other languages like French, German, Spanish and Portuguese, the absence of Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages was quite noticeable.
Software Accuracy
The software scans the front and back of the card without any issues. The card scanner can sync with a PDA or a Smart phone and also with Lotus Notes; while Vcards can be entered into Microsoft Outlook as well. The quick-search option was effective enough if you have got over a thousand contacts scanned. You can directly dial a contact or send a mail instantly using the icons available on the left menu. A few interesting features included in the software was password protection and the export/import options. Apart from exporting your database to a CSV file or text file, you can backup these cards to an online portal (CardScan.net) to ensure your database never gets lost. Although exporting the database to DBF and XLS formats was possible, it was not straightforward and involved creating modules.
You can also track a contact's address using the online-tracker and view the same in the form of a map (mapquest.com). Although it worked only for a few European countries and hardly for India, it was a good feature built-in. The AccuCard feature lets you keep your contact database up-to-date by periodically querying your contacts. Even though a periodic backup of contacts is good, the inability to store the actual scanned image is a noticeable drawback.
Conclusion
Available for a street price of Rs. 17,000/-, this card reader will be very handy for most business companies, media houses and other industries where maintaining a database of a thousand contacts would be quite difficult. Overall, a very efficient and accurate product doing justice to what it's supposed to do, except for the bizarre price.
